MacDonald. <b>$125.00</b></p><p>Thomas Boston 17 March 1676 – 20 May 1732 was a Scottish Presbyterian church leader theologian and philosopher. Boston was successively schoolmaster at Glencairn and minister of Simprin in Berwickshire and Ettrick in Selkirkshire. In addition to his best-known work <i>The Fourfold State</i> one of the religious classics of Scotland he wrote an original little book <i>The Crook in the Lot</i> and a learned treatise on the Hebrew points. He also took a leading part in the Courts of the Church in what was known as the "Marrow Controversy" regarding the merits of an English work <i>The Marrow of Modern Divinity</i> which he defended against the attacks of the "Moderate" party in the Church. Boston if unduly introspective was a man of singular piety and amiability. His autobiography is an interesting record of Scottish life full of sincerity and tenderness and not devoid of humorous touches intentional and otherwise.</p> D. R. Collie, hardcover

Instructions for ordering followed by illustrations of and pricing for various products to include crests letters rosettes hames terrets buckles chains links hooks etc. Born in New Brunswick Joseph Colgan came to Boston as a young boy where he learned and perfected his trade under Henry Cross father of Mark Cross the owner of America's first luxury leather goods company. Colgan established himself in business at Sudbury Street in 1850 remaining at that address throughout his career. He became involved in the manufacture of military and foremen's equipment fancy saddlery and leather specialties. Page edges lightly soiled throughout due to handling; title page with 1/4" x 1" chip missing to bottom edge and with creasing to bottom corner along with text separating from wrappers but still holding. Wrappers with creasing to top and bottom corners. Good. Privately printed, 1893. hardcover

The binding is strong with all pages firmly attached. A couple of pages show light pencil writing and notes. The pages show light soiling and light foxing. The title page shows 1851 as the published date. The dark green cloth covers have a gold illustration of a fork on the spine. The covers show general edgewear and light soiling. The first 21 pages used for pasted down serial clippings of the story titled "Only A Shop-Girl; or A Pearl in Pledge. A Story Founded on Actual Events that Occurred in Boston by Nathan D. Urner" no date. This serialized version ends on Chapter 25 with no more clippings to finish the story. Several of the ledger leaves are neatly removed in the gutters. <br /> <br /> Dozens of accounts records remain from November 1826 to July 15 1830. A few clippings and paper left inside. Exact location and owner of the ledger unknown. Location is in Massachusetts and Boston areas with several places identified. A handsome promotional book about the vanilla plant and vanilla extract sold by the Joseph Burnett Company commemorating the 50th anniversary of the firm and promoting Burnett's Vanilla Extract. The book contains three sections: "The Plant: Its Habitat and History" "Its Culture" and "Its Curing" with information on the vanilla plant or the vanilla orchid; its countries or regions of origin; and the cultivation and curing processes of vanilla. Text at the end warns customers of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople peddling fraudulent or low-quality vanilla extracts advocates for grocers to carry only high-quality vanilla extract and advertises Burnett's Vanilla Extract and Burnett's edible Standard Color Pastes. Internally fresh clean and sound. Original publisher's beige and green paper-covered boards titled and decorated in green and black on the front panel; no title to spine. Fine and rare thus. 1848815Boston: Printed for the Association 1848. <p>8vo. 235 x 140 mm. 9 ¼ x 5 ½ inches. 135 pp. Original salmon-colored printed wrappers; some darkening of the wrappers and foxing to the text block endpapers discolored; shelf mark in ink on lower part of spine and endpapers; a sound and not unattractive copy.</p><br /> <p>The Mercantile Library of Boston was established in 1820 to facilitate the moral and intellectual development of all classes of the community especially young men. The first pages of this catalogue describe the rise and near fall of the Association and its final stabilization in the 1840's. In 1842 Daniel Webster contributed $500 to the library fund which was matched by $1000 from ten of the Association's prominent members for the purchase of books. With this move more money were raised and the Association Library became "one of the best of its kind in the Country."</p><br /> After the history of the association constitution and by-laws are printed along with an eight-page list of members. The catalogue of the library is comprised of 112 pages listing in short-title format the books daily newspapers and periodicals in the collection. It represents an impressive group of books with focus on American history and literature local history business English books and travel. By 1877 the collection grew to 18000 books and was merged with the collections of the Boston Public Library. Printed for the Association unknown

Woolsen of 7 Bowdoin Square' appears in pencil on the front free endpaper.</p><br /> <p>"Since 1848 see above the date of our last Catalogue the Library has increased from six thousand volumes to sixteen thousand volumes; and although a hastily prepared Supplement was printed in 1851 the titles of nearly six thousand volumes the latest and most valuable additions to the Library were not to be found on any printed Catalogue." </p><br /> The catalogue includes a substantial historical sketch of the library and the acquisitions of books over a thirty-year period. Along with a subscription fee of two dollars members were obliged to present the Library with "one or more volumes either in biography history voyages travels or works relative to mercantile subjest . . ."
