The "Official catalog musical program list of exhibitors" for this fourth congress of members of the Boston Retail Grocers Association. The association was founded in 1881 and held its first food fair that year. Photographic portraits of the senior members of the Association are included as is a description of Miss Nellie Dot Ranche of Chicago who was brought in for the occasion to run the Domestic Science Programs. It's interesting that the committee reached out to the Midwest at this moment when Cooking Schools in Boston were on the rise and very visible. The copious advertising displays a range of categories of goods one would find in a grocery of the turn of the 19th century: coffee cocoa mustard Havana cigars root beer Ceylon tea French Coca Wine virgin olive oil nut meats and salt as well as household goods including: thread collars washing liquids bluing ink. Also represented are goods and services aimed at the grocers and retailers: boxes and bags promotional printing specialized contracting refrigeration etc. Tiny bit of spotting to green and gold-printed gray wrappers otherwise fine. 18909319Boston: Robinson Engraving Co 1890. Menu in painted wooden boards bound with cord 20 x 15.2 cm. 10 gold-printed leaves each a die-cut circle printed versos only. An elaborate program of events for the eleventh annual meeting of the Hotel Men's Mutual Benefit Association held in May 1890 at Boston's great hotels the Parker House Hotel Vendome and American House. The H.M.M.B.A. was founded in 1879 to offer hotel workers insurance plans; it was later to become the Bankers Life and Casualty Company. The program and menu for the three-day meeting includes the meeting itself music speakers presentations carriage excursions etc. The painted wooden boards hold die-cut 'booklets' dedicated to the Convention headquartered at the Parker House the Eleventh Annual Banquet held at the American House and the Reception held at the Hotel Vendome. The boards are scored and textured painted in silver with gold spots and hold a hand-lettered piece of 'vellum'. Some rubbing to edges of boards otherwise very good. Robinson Engraving Co hardcover

Paper on cloth backing hand-colored covered with a thin ancient layer of protective lacquer or varnish. No folds or tears. Short wrinkles on the untaut paper surface. Framed in glass. Size: 26 x 21 x 1.0. An imposing and beautiful broadside document! Prentiss Whitney of Boston Massachusetts published this beautiful copy of the Declaration of Independence. It is approximately 26"" tall by 21"" wide. It has a four-line title printed in 4 different fonts. The text of the document is primarily in a handscript font with some words enlarged and bolded in print type of four different fonts. Bottom section contains the signature replicas. The entire document is surrounded by two intertwined vines which encircle 13 state medallions filled with symbolic vignettes and an eagle and shield Federal medallion. Vines and medallions are fully hand-colored. At the very bottom is printed: 'STEREOTYPED BY THE BOSTON BEWICK COMPANY. PUBLISHED BY PRENTISS WHITNEY 30 WASHINGTON STREET.' It is undated but probably published in 1835. Prentiss Whitney 1787-1870 was an auctioneer publisher of historic patriotic American prints and an entrepreneurial investor at 30 Washington St. Boston in the 1830's and 1840's. His ancestor Rev. Peter Whitney of Northborough Ma was one of the first to call for publishing the Declaration of Independence 'American independence vindicated. A sermon delivered September 12 1776. At a lecture appointed for publishing the Declaration of Independence passed July 4 1776. By the representatives of the United States of America in general congress assembled'. The Boston Bewick Company no. 47 Court Street Boston was an association of authors artists printers and bookbinders which was in existence from 1834-1838. It is mostly known for producing engravings and for hiring Nathaniel Hawthorne as editor of the 'American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge'. The Act to incorporate the Boston Bewick Company states it is founded for: 'the purpose of employing improving and extending the art of engraving polytyping embossing and printing and carrying on the business thereof.' 1835 Boston Bewick ad: 'Engraving Stereotyping and Printing.: Boston Bewick Company. The Boston Bewick Company Respectfully Give Notice that They are Ready to Receive Orders for Engraving on Wood Steel and Copper; and for Copper-plate Letter Press and Xylographic Printing in All Their Branches.' Prentiss Whitney's prints are excessively scarce. The only other known copy of Whitney's 'Declaration' is in the Albert H. Small Declaration of Independence Collection University of Virginia. Whitney's other prints include an 1835 engraving titled 'Destruction of Tea in Boston Harbor in 1773' which was painted by artist George Loring Brown and engraved by Richard P. Cunard Line folding brochure advertising the steamship routes from Europe to the United States during the time of the late 1870s famine in Ireland. The Notice states that passengers would be issued tickets only on deposit of $25 in gold.<br /> <br /> The Cunard fleet is listed as well as agencies in Europe and the US and with a New York agent printed at the bottom: "C. G. Franklyn 4 Bowling Green New York'. Illustrated with a "track chart" showing the steam ship routes across the Atlantic and a triple panel center spread showing the cabin plan of the steam ship "Gallia" both the main and spar decks. Illustrated with a lithograph of the Gallia highlighted in red at the rear cover. <br /> <br /> Immigration to Boston and New York from Ireland exploded in the 1840s and 1850s due to the famine with at least 20000 immigrants yearly due to subsidized immigration from Britain on the Cunard Line. The trans Atlantic fares were in the $17 to $20 range; most immigrants had no further money and many remained in Boston and New York rather than relocating. WITH: Printed envelope 8 x 13 cm. with an engraving. A handsome menu printed on silk for a banquet celebrating the Boards of Trade of the Western Cities given by the City of Boston at the Revere Hotel. Revere House was one of the city's leading hotels hosting guests that included Charles Dickens Jenny Lind and Walt Whitman. Daniel Webster addressed audience from the steps of the portico. The engraving on the envelope depicts the hotel from across Boston's Bowdoin Square. The hotel has had an additional structure added to the previously flat roof. The bill of fare for the Western Boards of Trade included Green Turtle Soup Baked Shad in a Wine Sauce Leg of Southshore Mutton in Caper Sauce Duffield's Ham Pate de Foie and much more. In remarkably fine condition with only the slightest fraying to the edges of the silk. The envelope with an engraving of the Boston's City Hall has some light soil but is near fine. the hotel hardcover
188510250Boston: Kiley Printer 7 Spring Lane 1885. Bi-fold menu 13.5 x 12 cm. 4 pages. Illustrated. Engraved menu for a banquet given for Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks former Senator from and Governor of Indiana. Hendricks was the 21st Vice President lasting a mere 8 months in office from March 4th through November 25th 1885. This dinner was given by the Bay State Club at the famous Parker House. In the few short months he had left Hendricks was to give a controversial speech in support of Irish independence and head of the Boston machine politician Martin Lomasney was to name the Hendricks Club after him. The light tan card stock boards sport a gilt-edged circular medallion with an engraving of the Vice President. The card is lightly dusty and with the slightest of abrasions at the corners. A banquet menu presented to members of visiting Commercial Clubs of several Midwestern cities. Highlights of the menu include Penobscot Salmon a la Hollandaise Philadelphia Squab and a Pistachio Cream Meringue. The unprinted cardstock "boards" are separated neatly at the hinge but are intended to fold in half and thus have left a neat horizontal crease across the center of the menu. The verso records that on 3 August 1826 Bradford transferred this Certificate to A Republican Institution. The verso prints the 16th Article of the By-Laws permitting transfers of certificates among members. Signed twice by Bradford. Very Good plus.<br /> <br /> William B. Bradford was a Boston wholesale and retail grocer. The Boston Public Library's Archives contain some of his papers. The "Republican Institution was founded in 1819 'as a body politic and corporate forever for the purpose of procuring a building and keeping it in repair with suitable apartments for a reading room library and the meeting of the said society in the town of Boston Massachusetts.' Its intent was to provide a forum for political education and discussion of best means of promoting national welfare. Measures approximately 10" x 8 1/4". Affixed at left is the large corporate seal which indicated that the corporation was incorporated in 1819. Attached to and extending below the paper seal is a blue ribbon" online 'Republicanism' web site description of a specimen Certificate and description of the Institution 'Historical Pillars of the Republican Party'.<br /> Henry Dearborn of Boston had been a veteran of the Revolutionary War a Federalist Congressman and Secretary of War. He founded the Institution which was chartered in February 1819. Its purpose was to promote political thought and discussion. Seeking to purchase a building the Institution's organizers resolved to sell four hundred shares in the Institution for $25 each. A person could purchase up to four shares. unknown

The case was an early example in America of publicly-supported private development involving the annexation of much of what is now South Boston and the destruction of substantial existing property on the South Street side. Various petitions for and against the project are presented in the current pamphlet; these are signed in type by some of the principal players in the scheme including William Tudor and Gardner Greene for and multiple citizens under the signature of Edward Tuckerman opposing. Small ink stamp on bottom left corner dated 1881. <br> The broadside lays out the principles of good government. It offers quotes from President Grant and Gen. Garfield about the importance of civil service reform; the example of success in England; explains the core reason for the Civil Service Reform Association; a brief view of the Association's constitution; and a list of the principal officers. <br> The Association's President Moorfield Storey and other "Mugwumps" were strongly in favor of anti-corruption / good government reforms advocated by Grover Cleveland and other reformers. "The principles' of the Association were as follows: "That while certain officers of the Government should be in sympathy with the policy of the Administration the routine business should be conducted on business principles; that officers should be appointed on account of fitness for the work to be done and should be continued in office as long as they do that work well' that offices should not be used for partisan purposes; that Representatives are chosen to legislate and their time should not be given to the distribution of patronage; that the adoption of the well-devised system carrying out these principles will insure better administration and better legislation." Created in Boston around or shortly after the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act the photograph provides evidence of Chinese American presence in New England and self-representation in the diasporic community through dignified and professional portraiture despite legal and social marginalization.<br /> <br /> Chickering Elmer. The sitter is depicted in a composed frontal pose wearing a dark high-collared suit associated with middle-class professional attire of the period with a carefully styled mustache and direct gaze. The photograph conforms to late 19th-century studio conventions in lighting posture and presentation aligning the subject visually with the formal portrait norms of Boston society clientele typically served by Chickering's studio. The mount verso bears the printed mark "The Original Chickering Photographic Studio" identifying the maker as an established Boston portraitist known for photographing actors public figures and affluent patrons.
