1940204597Ann Arbor: Civil Rights Federation 1940. First edition. Neatly folded twice horizontally; fine. Two-sided broadsheet approx. 8-1/2 X 11 inches printed on both sides. Announcement of the "Open Hearing" held on behalf of thirteen expelled students with a graphic image of a judge on the recto and a length text along with lists of participants and sponsors on the rear. Following a peace rally in April 1940 University President Alexander G. Ruthven fearing fifth-column Communist organizing on campus expelled the students mostly members of the left-wing American Student Union. The case drew national attention at a time when the country was deeply divided over the war in Europe. At this culminating event in November a range of speakers including representatives of the Civil Rights Federation labor unions professors and activists denounced Ruthven and defended the students' first amendment rights. In the end however the students remained expelled and a year later the U.S. was in the war. Civil Rights Federation unknown

An unrecorded African-American business directory issued by the Booker T. Washington Business Association in Detroit. According to the introduction: "Booker T. Washington Business Association Detroit's oldest black business organization is proud to present the first of a series of Directories geared to support and encourage the development of more businesses within the Detroit area. This is your Directory and we urge you to begin today patronizing these black-owned businesses." The text of the directory is comprised of quarter-page advertisements for about forty said businesses ranging from automobile dealers to supermarkets according to the alphabetical index on the second page. Some of the ads are illustrated with portraits of the proprietors. The text also includes a four-page section titled "Membership Roster" inserted in the middle presumably listing the current members of the Booker T. Washington Business Association. We could locate no copies of this directory in OCLC or elsewhere. unknown

A rare directory of laypersons for the Michigan African Methodist Episcopal Church listing hundreds of congregants their addresses and phone numbers by their local churches throughout the state and even one in Chatham Ontario. The work also includes a full-page notice on the new Bishop Reverend Joseph Gomez as well as a page of "Things You Should Know About the A.M.E. Laymen's Organization" a listing of the staff of the Michigan Annual Conference an "In Memoriam" for Brother Albert Williams recently-deceased founder of the Laymen's Organization of the A.M.E. Church and a page of testimonials on serving as a layman with photographic portraits of five people. The only listing in OCLC records a 1963 edition at the Library of Michigan. 19563463Detroit 1956. Very good. Large-format pictorial wall calendar on twelve sheets each sheet measuring 19.5 x 13.5 inches bound at top with a strip of black plastic. Minor wrinkling and staining small hole in the last leaf costing a bit of one illustration. An interesting and ephemeral wall calendar created in 1956 as a promotional for the Detroit Metropolitan Mutual Assurance Company an African-American-owned life insurance company. The copyright notice is dated in that year and claimed by Charles C. Diggs Sr. the founder and president of DMMAC. The calendar features notable African descendants from America and around the world. The first month repeats the old Southern white claim that Hannibal Hamlin Lincoln's first Vice President was an African American. Hamlin is identified here as "Negro Vice-President of the United States." Other months are devoted to a variety of subjects such as Ida Wells Barnett Reverend Patrick Francis Healy two local civil rights leaders in Detroit - Francis M. Dent and Willis M. Graves Fulgencio Batista "Cuba's Negro President" "Three African Popes" and Queen Charlotte Sophia of England "Negro Ancestor of Present Day Royalty" among others.<br /> <br /> The individual days of the calendar throughout the year are populated with facts regarding major moments in the history of the African American experience i.e. January 1 - "New Year's Day - 863 Negro slavery abolished by law." January 5 reads "1943 Dr. George W. Carver scientist died at Tuskegee Institute. Carver Day established by act of Congress." Charles C. Diggs was an important African American political and business leader in greater Detroit. Over the course of his career he operated a funeral home helped found a cemetery for Black people and created the DMMAC to provide life insurance to African Americans shut out of traditional insurance opportunities through discrimination. Diggs became active politically as well becoming the first African American Democrat elected to the Michigan Senate in 1936. He worked for civil rights from within the system passing his signature legislation in 1937 known as the "Diggs Law" which punished discrimination based on race color or creed as a misdemeanor. Diggs' son Charles Jr. became the first Black man from Michigan to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.<br /> <br /> No copies of the present version in OCLC with only one copy of the previous year's calendar at the University of Kansas. unknown

An unrecorded program pertaining to the August 1960 biennial session of the United Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons in Michigan. The program contains the schedule of events for the session as well as numerous individual portraits and group shots of various African-American Masonic organizations for both men and women across the state of Michigan. As with similar publications of this type the program is interspersed throughout with legions of well wishes and advertisements providing important information on the network of people businesses and organiztions sympathetic to the Black Masons of Michigan. Joyce was a librarian and served as the assistant curator of books at the UM Clements Library for over 35 years.<br /> <br /> <br /> The card dated October 25 has a handwritten note laid in that says "This is the first product of my newly-acquired press.I hope I will be able to improve the product." This card and one other Christmas card are unnumbered and presumed to be cards 1 and 2. The rest of the cards are given a general number and also grouped into categories such as Historical Series Literary Series and Christmas Series. This archive contains General Numbers 12 3 5-10 13. <br /> <br /> It also contains a copy of To Hades We Will Go Westport Book II by Jane Howlon Black - actually an anagram for the publisher Wallace John Bonk. Laid in is an announcement of the cancellation of the Westport card series in spring of 1962 to publish this book with an attached specimen page as well as an address correction card. . A handsome presentation that enlists the endorsements from movie and radio stars and one major league baseball player for the line of 1938 Dodge automobiles. Joe DiMaggio's picture is on the front cover and he says "Dodge Bats Highest With Me!" and a special pictorial promotional sheet is laid-in titled "How I Learned To Bat" as told by Joe DiMaggio famous New York Yankees Home-Run Hitter." In one picture DiMaggio is shown driving a Dodge sedan along with his personal endorsement of the car. Also providing pictorial endorsements are movie actresses Claudette Colbert and Sonja Henie also a famous ice-skating champion a radio star Major Bowes and several starlets whose names I do not know. The booklet promotes "47 progressive new improvements and refinements more than the lowest-priced cars." Improvements include a better engine roomy and comfortable interior easy and simple to use steering and dials fender and headlight design improved windshields etc. Cars offered for 1938 are the Touring Sedan the Streamline Sedan the Touring Two-Door Sedan the Streamliner Two-Door Sedan the Coupe the Rumble Seat Coupe the Convertible Coupe the Convertible Sedan the Seven-Passenger Sedan and the Limousine. A light vertical fold crease a small hole punched in at the top adjacent to the spine where this booklet was most like hung a small closed tear to the top edge of the front cover panel and light rubbed at the extremities else a very good solid and attractive copy. The promotional sheet laid-in about Joe DiMaggio is also hole-punched and the top edges have small nicks and creases but not affecting any of the printing. Flint Michigan is the Flint Junior Coach-De-Luxe which is "designed and built to Flint standards and meets the demand of those thousands of motorists who have desired Flint quality in the field of low-price sixes." The Flint was an automobile marque that was assembled by the Flint Motors Division Flint Michigan between 1923 and 1927. Flint Motors was a wholly owned subsidiary of Durant Motors Company USA. The Flint was considered an assembled car because Durant Motors used components manufactured by outside suppliers to build its automobile lines. The cars were powered by a 6-cylinder Continental engine and its body stampings were made by Budd in Philadelphia. The origins of the Flint can be traced back to the Willys car company which under the direction of Walter P. Chrysler had been working on a prototype for a proposed 6-cylinder car. Willys had to sell off this prototype as part of its efforts to raise cash during a financial crisis. Once acquired this prototype was further modified to create the Flint. Following financial troubles at Durant Motors the Flint was discontinued in 1927. The Flint was priced to compete with Buick which was also assembled in Flint Michigan. Automobiles produced by Flint should not be confused with those manufactured by the Flint Automobile Company founded by A. B. C. Hardy in 1901 and which went out of business in 1903 after manufacturing only 52 automobiles in the $750–$850 price range. One panel offers a self-contained stamped envelope addressed to J.D. Smallwood 1713 La Branch City and with a return address of Johnston Motor Co. Houston - Texas; information stating that there are now about the 35000 Authorized Ford Sales and Service Stations; and illustrations as well as pricing information on Ford's Fordor Sedan Tudor Sedan Runabout and Coupe. Most interesting are the hand-written comments by a potential buyer perhaps J.S. Smallwood beside each model . "Reckon we'll ever own one" Sheet opens to a bright colorful illustration showing a family in a Ford touring Car and with another family at a campsite with their Ford parked beside the tent. Again pricing information if offered which is $297 F.O.B. Detroit as well as hand-written comments . "$295 - Joke. Starter and Demountable Rims $85 Extra freight insurance federal tax other extras etc. = NEARLY $550 Light chipping to edges along with light soiling and with rubbing to folds. Very good. First edition of this very rare and nicely illustrated 1931 dealer's catalogue for the last year of the V-8 Oakland whose marque would be eliminated in 1932 as the United States descended into the Great Depression and the demand for their line-up of beautiful V-8 models crashed. 6" x 9" color printed wrappers 16 pp. including covers illustrated six color plates numerous text illustrations specifications. The Oakland Motor Car Co. was founded in 1907 by Edward Murphy and purchased by GM with William Durant in 1909 and would grow to be the division which was marketed in the price range above Chevrolet but below Oldsmobile. After the introduction of the Pontiac brand by the company in the 1920s the Oakland marque began losing sales ground and the company began offering electric horns ignition theft locks automatic windshield cleaners spare rim & tires shock absorbers stop lights rear view mirrors and other equipment which has since become standard. This catalogue features the beautiful Fisher coachwork on the Custom Sedan Sport Coupe 2-door Sedan Business Coupe 4-door Sedan and the very popular Convertible Coupe. No copies located in Worldcat. This scarce dealership catalogue is the Hudson Motor Car Company's 30th anniversary lineup with fresh new styling and models. A limited numbers of these models have survived and very few appear in period photographs. Even though over 80000 cars were shipped to dealers there are very few remaining examples from one of the few surviving pre-World War II smaller automakers. For the year 1939 the company offered six new models all equipped with L-head engines with chrome-iron blocks beginning with a bare-bones Series 90 and then the Series 91 92 and 93 straight sixes and finally the fully equipped Series 95 and 97. The Country Club sedans Broughams and Coupes featured luxurious Airfoam interiors with a broad range of paint and upholstery choices. This is a very colorful and informative catalogue.
