Quarter gilt-stamped red leather over red marbled paper-backed boards all edges marbled; cover edges and corners gently rubbed. Near fine. According to a pencil note on the free rear endpaper the ink signature and inscription below is that of Alexis Guignard Comte de Saint-Priest 1805-51 a French diplomat and historian of the Academie Francais. This work contains two stories: Antigone and L'Homme Sans Nom. Antigone a re-working of Sophocles' original story achieved popularity in France because it was seen as a reflection of the suffering of Louis XIV's daughter the Duchesse d'Angpuleme but Ballanche's actual muse was Juliette Recamier a beautiful and brilliant Parisian who hosted a rather famous salon. In her Ballanche perceived "a kindred unhappiness." Her "incapacity for happiness he argued is a sign of the awareness of a fallen creature of its divine origin and its nostalgia for a celestial home" McCalla 49. He saw her beauty as a reflection of her moral perfection. L'Homme Sans Nom centers on a "nameless man" who is on the council that votes for the regicide of Louis XIV in 1793; wary of inflaming political public opinion because of the recent assassination of the Duc de Berry by a Bonapartist Ballanche limited the first 1820 edition of the story to a run of 100 copies. He intended his new work "as advice for the King and a small circle of political leaders" rather than the general populace" McCalla 78. Ballanche was a French philosopher who favored a view of history in which mankind achieves "progress through ordeals." Essentially "a past epoch could possess its own rightness and legitimacy even as it had lost the right to continue" which he described in his work Palingenesie Wikipedia. "He is considered by some French critics as a great writer and profound thinker but by others his writings are regarded as mystical and obscure" Thomas 253. McCalla Arthur. Jany 9th"; addressed to "Col. R. Frazer Lancaster Pa." Folded for mailing stamped "PAID 3" with faint circular postal cancel of Middletown and free frank "paid." Old wax seal and folds for mailing. Near Fine.

Gen. Simon Cameron 1799-1889 of Middletown Dauphin County Pennsylvania was a Democrat and Know-Nothing before becoming a Republican in 1856. Noted for his corrupt dealings and as a political chameleon he was a U.S. Senator from 1845-1849 1857-1861 and 1867-1877; and Secretary of War from 1861-1862 when Lincoln exiled him to Moscow as Minister to Russia.
Reah Frazer 1804-1856 was a well known attorney and prominent member of the Democratic Party in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. His father William C. Frazer 1776-1838 was a Lancaster attorney and served as a Supreme Court Judge in Wisconsin territory for a time; his grandfather William Frazer 1753-1817 was a Revolutionary War veteran and served as a justice of the peace in New Castle County Delaware. 184535248n.p. 1845. Broadside 7 3/4" x 9 3/4". Completely in ink manuscript. Very Good.

Simon Cameron 1799-1889 was running for the United States Senate from Pennsylvania at the time of this letter. The special election which Cameron won occurred in March 1845 after Senator James Buchanan resigned to become President Polk's Secretary of State.
As this Letter suggests Cameron was heavily involved throughout his career in the award of government-bestowed contracts and largesse. He was dogged by allegations doubtless true of corruption. Nevertheless President Lincoln needed his support and that of Pennsylvania; Lincoln named him Secretary of War and then in 1862 minister to Russia. Cameron returned to the Senate in 1867 and served for another ten years. unknown books

Mild wear Very Good.

The document says Howes was reprinted in this edition "to discredit Cameron" a Pennsylvania kingmaking politician who avidly stuffed his pockets with the spoils of a panoply of public offices. In 1838 President Van Buren made him an Indian Commissioner charged with settling the Winnebago Indian land claims. The appointment ended in scandal when he used his own bank's notes as part of the adjustment. He became derisively known as "The Great Winnebago Chief." In 1838 President Van Buren made him an Indian Commissioner in charge of settling the Winnebago Indian land claims. The appointment ended in scandal when he used his own bank's notes as part of the adjustment. He became derisively known as "The Great Winnebago Chief." The front wrapper quoting from the St. Louis Reporter calls Cameron's activities "infamous speculation."
Bibliographers-- generally recording only a 38-page pamphlet under this title-- conclude that this pamphlet was printed in 1839. That seems unlikely. Original House Document 229 was printed during the 25th Congress in 1839. This reprint was published to thwart Cameron's designs on a U.S. Senate seat and was probably printed in 1855: he was running for the Senate that year and a related pamphlet entitled a Rejoinder to the Defence Published by Simon Cameron also issued in 1855. Each of them exposes Cameron's shady business dealings during his term as Indian Commissioner. 1832025670London: E. Wilson Royal Exchange 1832. Octavo. Half-Titleads on verso xii v-viii 360 pages. Howes F93 calls this work "a valuable account of the Illinois and Indiana frontier". The author's real name was O'Ferrall. While de Toqueville's work remains the classic there is much in this fascinating account that is not only more accessible but particularly insightful in that area known as the "new west" usually ending with the Mississippi. He has accounts of Robert Owen and the New Harmony Community the lawlessness which he says should be a warning to those who think merely acquiring land will prevent them from fraud and violence. His account of a wild-eyed preacher who saw in the Cahokia Mounds a proof of the Trinity. I found in reading this remarkable account a condition of life reminiscent of Lincoln's Prairie Years though more violent. For those who think the early American frontier beyond the eastern seaboard was being civilized it is obviously true that the law of those with power connivance and greed determined who would succeed. Lincoln's character and remarkable morality is evinced even more clearly after seeing the world in which he lived. Bound in modern brown cloth paper spine label lettered in black endpapers renewed page edges have toning. A very nice copy. E. Wilson, Royal Exchange unknown books
