Giovanni Bartolomeo Marliano 14881 - 26 July 15661 was an Italian antiquarian and topographer most notable for his study of the topography of ancient Rome. Texts in Latin with occasional passages in Hebrew Arabic Syriac and Greek. Contemporary vellum lightly stained with old manuscript label faded and blurred at spine. Occasional light toning and a few oxidation spots else a very good copy with crisp text. First edition of this important collection of letters chiefly between the orientalist and member of the Oratorian order Jean Morin 1591-1659 and Cardinal Francesco Barberini 1597-1679. Occasioned by the attempt of Pope Urban VIII to unite the eastern churches with the Roman Catholic Church they document an important early attempt to address the relations between Rome and the Christian communities of the Levant and Near East. The first two letters from the Samaritan community in Egypt are addressed to Joseph Scaliger and discuss the differences between their luni-solar calendar and that employed by the mainstream Jewish community; originally written in Hebrew the present Latin versions were prepared by Morin. Fourteen letters contain the correspondence between Morin and Pietro Della Valle 1586-1652 on Samaritan matters and Islamic chronology. Purchased from the heirs of the French scholar Amelot de la Houssaye the 94 letters were edited by the pioneering biblical critic Richard Simon 1638-1712 who may be credited with the "first attempt to write a history of the Bible as a piece of literature" Schaff-Herzog. Focusing his analyses on the text versions and commentaries Simon critically discussed the Septuagint and the Vulgate and defended the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He affirmed the critical value of the Masoretic text while acknowledging the late origin of the Hebrew vocalization system. In his Histoire Critique du Vieux Testament Paris 1678 he also dared to suggest "that Moses cannot be the author of all the books attributed to him." Too radical for its time the work was suppressed and nearly all copies of the first print run were destroyed. A transcription of one of the surviving copies served as the basis of the 1680 Rotterdam edition and an English version published at London in 1682. Simon was expelled from the Oratorians. It thus comes as no surprise to observe that his substantial biography of Morin which precedes the letters "amounts to a diatribe against not only Morin but the entire Oratorian Congregation" Wetzer & Welte. Early publication of the scholar Richard Simon containing his French translation of "Historia degli riti hebraici" by Rabbi Leon of Modena 1574 - 1654 Yehudah Aryeh Mi-Modena. An important source for the history of European Judaism. Modena's work was originally published in Italian first in Paris in 1637 and then in Venice in 1638. Both of these editions included Modena's supplement on the heretical Jewish sects the Karaites and the Samaritans as well as several other chapters on divinations and spells. The book was significant in that was the first work of the modern era aimed at non-Jewish readers to educate them on Jewish religious practice and customs. It was quite popular in the period went through numerous internationally translated editions. Simon's French edition of the work was first issued in 1674 including the supplement by Modena. In 1681 he issued both the second edition of his translation to which was added his work on comparative religion "Comparaison des Ceremonies des Juifs" and that work published separately. It suffices to recall that the work allowed among other things the rediscovery of the East and of non-Christian religions through an almost ethnographic vision which objectively described Judaism independently of the religious prejudices of the 17th century thus inaugurating what will make all the vocation of the great Oratorian. Table of contents a the rear. The final page contains an advertisement for the publisher at the bottom. Decorative bookplate of French author and economist André Morellet 1727 – 1819 pasted on the interior front cover. Binding with minor rubbing to covers and extremities. Brown label on the spine lightly chipped along the edges. Minor sporadic water stains and/ or foxing to a few pages throughout. P.23 torn along the side margin with no loss of text. Poems celebrating the truce with Spain though attributed to a former opponent of the truce with the Dutch poems in textura types and Latin marginal notes in roman. A political pamphlet in verse celebrating peace and dated less than a month before the signing of the Twelve Years' Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic. The main poem takes the form of a "codicil" to War's "last will and testament." It recites the various legacies both good and bad that the War has left to people on both sides and even to people and countries not directly involved in the fighting. Asher mistakenly lists the present pamphlet as no. 11 in the Bye-Korf series: it was published about six months after the Bye-Korf was banned but later collectors often inserted it and the associated Testament in place of the earlier Testament which should have been Asher 26-28/10. The author place of publication and publisher given on the title-page are all word plays "Yemand van Waer-Mond" for example suggesting "someone of honest mouth." The STCN attributes the pamphlet with a query to Nierop who propagandized against peace in one of the Bye-Korf pamphlets Asher 28/37 but rejoiced in it once it came. Alden & Landis attributes the associated Testament ofte Wtersten Wille to Middelgeest. Lacking the 2 plates and 3 smaller slips with 7 additional woodcut illustrations. 8 132 pp. First German edition of the first Dutch fortification manual with woodcut illustrations by Simon Stevin 1548-1620 which inaugurated a new era in the history of siege warfare. It professionalized military engineering introducing many original ideas and presenting them in lucid vernacular language. The present first German translation made his work accessible to an international audience for the first time though translations had already circulated in manuscript and was followed by a French translation in Stevin's collected mathematical works in 1634. In part through the influence of the present manual the German-language classics of fortification such as Adam Freitag's continued to develop the Dutch school of fortification.The 1594 first edition was illustrated by woodcuts on the integral leaves but for the present edition seven of the woodcut figures were instead printed separately and inserted as 2 folding plates and 3 smaller slips. These are lacking in the present copy though it includes all integral leaves with the complete text and the other 30 illustrations. Quires C E and O are somewhat browned. Otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins occasionally preserving part of a deckle at the foot and fore-edge. Kobberstukket portræt af Paulli efter Karel van Mander kobberstukket titelblad afbildende gudinden Flora siddende i en portal hvorigennem der er udsigt til byens tårne disse to kobbere tæt beskåret i ene margin og opklæbet. De 4 deltitelblade med de såkaldte årstidkobbere mangler. 36786 = fol 1-39394 pp. samt 376 helsides træsnit af planter på 188 blade. De 4 deltitelblade som hører til billeddelen er tilstede.Til slut kolofonbladet med Plantin's helsides træskårne bogtrykkermærke. Billeddelen har tilskrifter i gl. hånd med danske navne og undertiden anføres deres brug. Marginalnoterne er her tæt beskåret ved ombindingen. Trykt på svært papir eksemplaret er i god stand med kun lette brugsspor. Registerbladene 94 omfatter 4 registre 3 sprogregistre latin tysk dansk og et "sygdomsregister". Den sjældne originaludgave af det første danske Herbarium der som titelbladet angiver både skulle tjene som en botanik men også som en lægebog. Bogen er et af 16oo-tallets finest udstyrede danske værker. I et brev dateret 1645 opfordrer Christian IV Collegium Medicum til at forfatte et værk som skulle indeholde allehånde råd mod sygdomme og oplysning om hvor folk kunne finde urterne således at de uden de store omkostninger kunne kurere sig selv når sygdom opstod. Kollegiet overdrog opgaven hermed til Simon Paulli. En af grundene til at bogen kom i et så fint udstyr er at forlæggeren Balthasar Moret fra Plantin-trykkeriet i Antwerpen overlod de af ham ejede botaniske træsnit som tidligere havde været anvendt i Tabermontanus' værker til bogens illustrationsdel.
