175019580Amsterdam 1750. Twelve pen and ink wash drawings each ca. 8 x 6.5 cm in subtle shades of grey and sepia. All 12 drawings mounted on a single contemporary stiff paper support 44 x 61 cm neatly arranged in three rows of four each with a border of lines drawn around it in ink. A contemporary pencil inscription below the lower right drawing reads "S. Fokke Amsterdam 1712-1784". Another in a later hand in the lower right corner of the support reads "S. Fokke". A set of drawings by Simon Fokke 1712-1784 made as models for the illustrations in J.F. Martinet's Alle de werken van Flavius Josephus Amsterdam 1783-1787. The 12 pen and ink wash drawings vividly depict Old Testament scenes very beautifully drawn and so subtly washed in a rich pattern of greys and sepia that the spaces left blank seem to radiate fire and sunlight. The engravings made from these drawings are in reverse and have 2 scenes on each plate.Simon Fokke was one of the most important artists of the second generation of 18th century book illustrators. According to E. de La Fontaine Verwey he was a spontaneous and very gifted draughtsman and an expressive designer who sometimes even engraved a plate without first drawing a model.A fine set.l Poortman 54; cf. 1710152911London: Printed and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster 1710. First edition of Clement's defence of his Faults on Both Sides a pamphlet supporting the establishment of a non-partisan government published the same year. In the past Faults on Both Sides has been attributed to Robert Harley but it is generally accepted that Simon Clement c. 1654-c.1730 was the author. However it does seem that Harley had some role in its publication and it can be seen as election propaganda for the 1710 election with Harley being the implicit non-partisan choice. Joseph Trapp published a response arguing that the pamphlet was a conspiracy by the Whigs who saw that their dominance was ending and were consequently urging for a coalition government to keep their power which Clement responded to in A Vindication. At any rate the number of editions which the pamphlet and its responses ran to shows the significance of the publication on the contemporary political scene. Octavo 193 x 115 mm. Recent marbled boards printed paper label to front cover. Binding fine contents somewhat browned. A very good copy. ESTC T50855; Hanson 1171 Goldsmiths' 4617. See Paul B. The first work shows the ceremonial mourning chamber with Princess Anna on her death bed. The plates were drawn by Pieter de Swart 1709-1772 one of the most important Dutch architects of the 18th century and engraved by Simon Fokke 1712-1784. The second work shows the funeral procession which took place in Delft on the 23rd of February in 1759 with detailed illustrations of all the heralds riflemen guards etc. that took part in the ceremony. The plates for this work were drawn by artist Paulus Constantijn la Fargue 1729-1782 and also engraved by Fokke. The creators apparently suspected that counterfeit editions of the work might appear as the text at the end of the first work states that only copies signed by the bookseller would be considered real. The main interest of the French version lay in a series of joined hand positions through which the partners moved by passing under each other's arms turning each other around and passing behind each other's back. The steps to the dance were of secondary importance judging from the perfunctory manner in which they are treated in French books describing the allemande and seem to have been subject to some variation. In his Almanach Dansant 1770 Guillaume described two allemande steps out of the several he said existed the main one in 2/4 time and another in 3/8." Title page signed by J. G. Kohler; bookplate of Ing. Dr. Edmund Neusser. Lovely copy. First edition. Klugel based his writings on that of Leonhard Euler 1707-1783 to whom the book is dedicated dedicated and his famous work on optics. In his parts VII and VIII he deals with the telescope and especially the microscope. / Euler's own work on the theory of the achromatic microscope was written as early as 1762 and 1771 when he dealt with the subject more fully. In 1774 Euler's pupil and friend Nicolas Fuss wrote a little book on how to construct an achromatic microscope. Klugel translated that work in 1778 and then followed that with this more thorough treatment being his Analytische Dioptrik also 1778. Due to the crudeness of design of the objective made in 1791by Francois Beeldsnyder 1755-1808 a colonel in the Amsterdam cavalry Mayall asserts and others uphold this view that he feels the discussion of the dates of origin or this instrument are at best unclear. – Mayall.
