One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's blind stamp representing a child's profile in lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe edition on verso; print preceded by a tissue guard captioned with the artist's name title and presentation text; blank tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe edition: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work in its own right. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters grew in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and devoted to conservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the illustrated luxury book. 1832025670London: E. Wilson Royal Exchange 1832. Octavo. Half-Titleads on verso xii v-viii 360 pages. Howes F93 calls this work "a valuable account of the Illinois and Indiana frontier". The author's real name was O'Ferrall. While de Toqueville's work remains the classic there is much in this fascinating account that is not only more accessible but particularly insightful in that area known as the "new west" usually ending with the Mississippi. He has accounts of Robert Owen and the New Harmony Community the lawlessness which he says should be a warning to those who think merely acquiring land will prevent them from fraud and violence. His account of a wild-eyed preacher who saw in the Cahokia Mounds a proof of the Trinity. I found in reading this remarkable account a condition of life reminiscent of Lincoln's Prairie Years though more violent. For those who think the early American frontier beyond the eastern seaboard was being civilized it is obviously true that the law of those with power connivance and greed determined who would succeed. Lincoln's character and remarkable morality is evinced even more clearly after seeing the world in which he lived. Bound in modern brown cloth paper spine label lettered in black endpapers renewed page edges have toning. A very nice copy. E. Wilson, Royal Exchange unknown

Overall an excellent copy from the library of Dr. Sydney Ross with his small book label on the paste-down. First edition in English the first effort at an English translation which presumably got no further. The complete English translation was done by the Nathaniel Bowditch and published Boston 1829-1839.<br /> <br /> In Laplace’s monumental Mecanique celeste first published between 1799 and 1827 all the laws of planetary motion are deduced from the concept of universal gravity. He argued that the universe was really a great self-regulating machine and that the whole solar system could continue on its existing plan for an immense period of time. This was a great step forward from the Newtonian uncertainties in this area. He also offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. Specifically the first book treats the general laws of balance and motion and the universal law of gravity as well as the movement of the centers of gravity of celestial bodies.<br /> <br /> Laplace 1749-1827 considered the Isaac Newton of France was one of the most influential scientists in the fields of mathematics celestial mechanics and physics. Not much is known about the translator John Toplis. He lived in Nottingham and was likely acquainted with his neighbor the mathematician George Green. H. Barnett unknown
