The Pennsylvania Railroad made an extraordinary effort in corporate image making to produce editions both in English and Spanish. Maps included are: Pennsylvania RR New York to Chicago: 2 New York Harbor; 3 New York City; 4 Philadelphia 5 Washington 6 Chicago; and 7 Chicago Business District. This copy was bound in Malaga Spain for the W.C. Bevan & Company which was one of the largest U.S. companies in Spain. Bound in brown cloth spine lettering gilt light brown endpapers. Starting in Detroit and ending in Quebec the book describes cities en route particular resorts and hotels: Mt. Clemens St.Clair Springs Port Huron Hotel Windermere and many more. 8 3/4 x 5 3/4" 100pp b&w ills staplebound. Silvis traveled around on the Union Pacific Railroad line. "Stereoscope & Landscape Views of Notable Points on Line of Pacific R.R. / Always on Hand." We can't find much about Silvis though a notice in Hailey Idaho in late June of 1888 announced that he was in town for a few days to take pictures through the holiday. . U.P.R.R. Photograph unknown

This is the original 1893 printing of this 56 page illustrated booklet published and distributed by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. It vividly describes travel by train through the Rocky Mountains in the 1890s. Illlustrations accompany the text side trips to many different sights are described in much detail. An original publication not a recent reprint. There is some staining to the covers which is also faintly visible to some margins of text. Light chipping to the cover and spine pages mildly toned some staple rust the entire text is clean and sound. 189430071St. Louis: Woodward & Tiernan 1894. Seventh edition. Paperback. 124pp. Duodecimo 20 cm Peach and black printed wraps. Good. The wraps are foxed and faded. The rear wrap is partially detached. The wraps have perhaps been discreetly glued to the spine. There are numerous losses from the paper of the spine and there are also some small losses from the edges of the wraps. In addition there are several short closed tears in the edges of the wraps. There are several very light moisture stains on the front wrap and there is a thin 1 and 1/4 inch tall light moisture stain on the fore edge of the rear wrap. The edges of the pages at the beginning are chipped and have small light stains in the bottom corners. The pages are browned. Compliments of the Passenger Department Union Pacific The Overland Route. Small NY State Library stamp on the margin of the first page with a small withdrawal stamp in the margin of the last. Some soiling to the outer leaves. <br /> <br /> Announces a convention to be held at Cincinnati on May 19 1868 and promotes Lorenzo Sherwood's candidacy for President. The League was an attempt to combat the railroad monopoly and thereby to reduce fares for freight. Sherwood 1810-1869 a legislator lawyer abolitionist and political nonconformist spent 10 years in Texas prior to the Civil War working as an attorney representing shipping and freight concerns. The outset of the war found him in New York on business where he stayed. An outspoken abolitionist and advocate of extreme versions of Reconstruction including military occupation of the South he was a notable figure of the time. Much of the text here consists of newspaper extracts many from the Washington Great Republic touting the organization activities and Sherwood's candidacy. Oxford American National Biography. 1893X1851893. Manuscript. Snall archive of material concerning injuries allegedly sustained in a railway accident near Buttsville New Jersey March 3rd 1893. There are three sest of documents: 1 three-page typescript legal complaint filed in U.S. Circuit Court for the Southern Distirct of New York by Charles F. Lothrop against the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway Comapny. The plaintiff charges the railroad with negligence in causing a collision from which Lothrop suffered various injuries. 2 five-page legal sized typescript report of H.K. Bradner M.D. April 1894 regarding the alleged injuries of John Drum and Charles Lothrop suffered in the wreck. Dr. Bradner called upon a Salem Massachusetts doctor who was also aboard the train and who had treated the plaintiffs Drum and Lothrop and who stated that he believed they were not much hurt. There is also a report of Bradner's interview with Drum and an interview with another doctor who had examined Lothrop who also clearly thought Lothrop was exaggerating his injuries. Hand notations in red ink appear throughout; 3 14-page manuscript transcribing interviews with several persons including passengers and railroad employees concerning the accident. Dated April 17 1894. Staple bound final leaf coming loose at two of the staples. All documents in sound clean intact condition. Yellow endpapers. Frontispiece illustration. Spine sunned. Cloth at spine ends chipped. Underlying boards barely just beginning to peek through at corners. Free endpapers and recto of frontispiece mildly discolored. Short tape repairs to long closed tear on p. 140 no text is obscured. Loss to fore-edge margin of p. 163/64 again text not affected. Stitching visible in inside margins however binding very sturdy.<br /> <br /> Ex-libris James Cowan Smith with his bookplate depicting his beloved dog Callum on the front pastedown. James Cowan Smith 1843-1919 was a British civil engineer director of a railway company British Wagon and philanthropist. In his will he bequeathed what would now amount to roughly $4284000 to the National Gallery of Scotland to be used to expand its collection. The one stipulation was that the portrait of his dog Callum by John Emms was to be on permanent display in the museum.
