The Philadelphia and Reading represents one of the nation's oldest railroads with its roots going back to 1832. The Atlantic and Great Western is a railroad that would merge and morph several times and become the New York Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad. Light dust soil to covers top corner lightly bumped. -- Condition. "The Pioneer Limited name first appeared in 1898 chosen in a public contest. It was among the nation's first named trains and the first named train on the Milwaukee Road. The 1898 train was newly equipped with Barney & Smith sleeping cars the carriages described in a period brochure as ".a veritable edition de luxe bound in covers of yellow and gold." The train was re-equipped multiple times in subsequent years the last wooden cars being replaced by steel ones in 1914. During the train's early years the Pioneer Limited had a number of "firsts": it had the first government railway mail contract in the region the first sleeping cars on the route and was the region's first electrically lighted and steam-heated train. the Pioneer Limited was also noted for its dining car service"-wikipedia. Excellent condition."Rail Road Flat is a Gold Rush era mining town that was settled by gold seekers in 1849 named for a wooden track which conveyed ore cars with waste rock to and from the diggings. A post office was established in 1857 and the first stamp mill erected in 1866. By 1872 five or six mills were operating and at the turn of the century two stamp mills and one arrastra were still in operation. The Clark Ditch was constructed to supply the placer mines of Rail Road Flat in 1856 and soon extended to the mines of Glencoe and Rich Gulch. Originating near Blue Mountain it carried water from the South Fork of the Mokelumne over 55 miles servicing two reservoirs and numerous downstream communities" Calaveras History. It was the site of an Indian council as well as the center of rich placer and quartz mining. Its largest producer was the Petticoat Mine. J. Winterburn & Co. unknown
