Abney 1843-1920 was a famous photographer and an early pioneer in color photography. He was a experienced traveler and often visited Switzerland and Italy to climb. With the national laws of British society examining compulsory festal customs of ninety eight trades and occupations in the three kingdoms. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative read with anecdotes of drinking usage in different trades and classes throughout the Kingdom. In half calf binding and cloth covered boards. Externally smart with minor shelfwear and slight rubbing to spine and extremities. Cornelius Walford's bookplate to front pastedown. various articles on drinks and drinking pasted to front blank pages and half title page as well as printer's page and contents page. Internally first five leaves are detached but present. Otherwise firmly bound. John Colin Dunlop d. 1842 was the son of John Dunlop 1755–1820 of Rosebank Glasgow a merchant and song writer and lord provost of Glasgow. He attended the University of Edinburgh and was admitted advocate in 1807 but practiced very little law preferring a life in literature. "…he was a conscientious critic and in most instances he had carefully read the works he describes. The oriental and modern sections are the weakest. The chapters on romance and chivalry are good and those on the Italian novelists deserve high praise. The stories are well condensed and the book is written in a clear and agreeable style." A German edition translated by Felix Liebrecht appeared in 1851. This work was first published in 1886 to accompany one of the more eccentric displays at the Edinburgh International Exhibition of the same year. Historically accurate reconstructions of noteworthy but long-demolished Edinburgh buildings were built side by side to create a fictional street. This guide provided visitors with key historical information relating to the recreated buildings and monuments ranging from the medieval market cross to the historic tollbooth. Fact is combined with anecdote situating the buildings in the wider context of Edinburgh's rich history. The text was written by John Charles Dunlop and Alison Hay Dunlop siblings little known beyond their Edinburgh circles. Of particular interest are the illustrations by William Fergusson Brassey Hole 1846-1917 who later painted the murals in the entrance hall of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Arthur George Sydney Mitchell 7 January 1856 - 13 October 1930 was a Scottish architect. In 1885 Mitchell was engaged to restore the Mercat Cross. He was commissioned to recreate several of Edinburgh's demolished medieval buildings including the Netherbow as part of the Edinburgh Exhibition of 1886. He continued to draw on the Scots Renaissance style in such projects as Duntreath Castle 1890. William Brassey Hole RSA 7 November 1846 - 22 October 1917 was an English artist illustrator etcher and engraver known for his industrial historical and biblical scenes. Hole went on to specialize in painting industrial and historical material. He devoted much of his energies to Scottish national subjects and purposes. In 1898 Hole painted a Processional Frieze for the entrance hall of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery showing over 150 figures or "heroes" from Scotland's past. A critic described this work as "one of the most notable essays in mural decoration ever accomplished in this country". He also provided historical paintings for Edinburgh City Chambers and ecclesiastical decorations for other buildings. The International Exhibition of Industry Science and Art was a World's fair held in Edinburgh Scotland in 1886. The exhibition was held in The Meadows. It was opened on 6 May by Prince Albert Victor and ran to 30 October occupied 30 acres had 2770000 visits and made £5555 profit. Exhibits included an Old Edinburgh Street exhibit which included reconstructions of by then demolished buildings of the Royal Mile including the Netherbow Port. Neilson and Company of Glasgow exhibited the Caledonian Railway Single steam locomotive. Scotch whiskey was also highlighted. The Zetland and Fair Isle exhibit gave Edinburgh city whale jawbones which formed an arch on Jawbone Walk. The jawbones were removed for restoration in 2014 due to deterioration and lack of maintenance. Morgan p113. William "Tiger" Dunlop 1792-1848 was one of the most colourful figures in Canadian history. He served in the War of 1812 as an assistant surgeon and settled in Canada in 1826 as an agent for the Canada Company. His witty engaging personality and drinking exploits are legendary. Dunlop never travelled without his "Twelve Disciples" eleven bottles filled with various potent substances and one bottle called "Judas" filled with water. His Statistical Sketches is an entertaining work mixing some small practical advice with much tomfoolery fully exploiting the author's humourous persona. He remarks for example in his chapter on climate that Upper Canada had the healthiest climate on earth as whisky could be purchased anywhere for a shilling a gallon. John Murray unknown

According to Worldcat the only other copy can be found in the British Library. <br /> <br /> NOTE: This volume is not to be confused with other volumes of Lady Montague's letters. There are no transaction records for this privately-issued volume on Rare Book Hub. These letters to Sir James and Lady Frances Steuart were written between May of 1758 and July of 1762. On August 21 LMWM died of breast cancer just seven weeks after her last letter to Lady Frances Steuart was written -- on July 2nd. LMWM wrote the letters in her last surviving important correspondence: with Sir James and Lady Frances Steuart. In that final letter LMWM wrote: "Dear Madam -- I have been ill a long time and am now so bad I am little capable of writing" going on to assure Lady Frances : "I am always told your affairs shall be taken care of. You may depend dear Madam nothing shall be wanting on the part of your Ladyships faithful humble Servant" signed M.W. Montague. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu 1689-1762 the famed English writer poet and traveller corresponded with Sir James and Lady Francis Steuart while travelling the continent. . The Steuarts had been exiled from their home in Scotland after their alleged involvement in the 1745 Jacobite uprising. They did not return to Scotland until 1763. Sir James Steuart an economic theorist Steuart's "Inquiry into the Principles of Political Oeconomy" was the first systematic economic treatise to be published in Britain and introduced the very term 'political economy' into the English language. Steuart often sent Montague his manuscript writings for her commentary. Montagu is perhaps best remembered for her writings on the Ottoman Empire and their practice of smallpox inoculation. However her letters to the Steuarts relate important current events in Italy and the Netherlands as well as her views on health gender and education. Montague writes in her characteristically witty style throughout. In one instance she writes "I own I am charmed with.the reproach which you men so saucily throw on our sex as if we alone were subject to vapours.you vile usurpers do not only engross learning power and authority to yourselves but will be our superiors even in constitution of mind and fancy you are incapable of the woman's weakness of fear and tenderness" 17 This copy is one of "a few printed for strictly private" circulation. <br /> <br /> Scottish General James Steuart 1744-1839 son of Sir James and Lady Francis Steuart of Coltness confided the task of editing his family's letters and papers to John Dunlop 1785-1842 a Scottish commentator on literature. As the address to the reader states "Sir James Steuart had no intention till very lately of Printing this little volume; but it having been represented to him how much some of his particular friends would be gratified by a perusal of letters from the pen of Lady M.W. Montague.he at length consented to the letters being put into their present form and to have only a few copies of them thrown off" Preface to the Letters. General James Steuart presented this copy to one of those gratified friends Archibald Campbell 1763-1838 of Blythswood House MP for Glasgow.
