This original copy is a true research guide to the unfortunate event in the search for the North West Passage by the Steamer Jennette in 1881. Condition : Very Good with edge ware to the corners and spine first end page is starting to split at the hinge.Exowner gift inscription on the first blank page dated 1884. 1806032669London : J Johnson 1806 A very good copy of Vol III of this scarce work by William Holloway in full leather binding with contemporary blind stamped boards and newer spine. The British Museum . was issued in 4 volumes and this volume is complete in itself and covers fish and insects. It contains a colour frontispiece and 22 further hand coloured plates of fish and 10 hand coloured plates of insects. It lacks the engraved title page and according to the copy held by Harvard University lacks the plate of a swallow tail. We have not been able to find consistent collations of this work. The binding is in very good clean condition with light wear and scuffing to the boards. There is an armorial bookplate with the name Haughton and the motto 'maigre le fort' to the front pastedown. There is the signature of James Haughton dated 1810 to the title together with a part signature - Heard - dated 1884. Contents: frontispiece title contents list pp vi; fish - text 1-143 with 22 plates; insects pp 145-216 the end with 10 plates. The contents generally clean with well coloured plates. There is occasional light marking - most obvious at pp 39-41. J Johnson hardcover

Fantastic and ultimate association copy updating the Vice President during the Civil War of the current status on the naval engagements. Two striking color plates in front one on ""the Ram Louisiana as she appeared prior to the explosion"" and the other ""the Ram Manassas as she appeared in passing the Harriet Lane after receiving a broadside from the ship the Mississippi."" Reddish brown heavy textured cloth on boards with blind stamped decorations to front and gilt titling in center. Rear has eagle and shields blind stamped with decorative borders. Multiple fold-out maps throughout all in Very Good condition. The maps include a detailed view of the water and railroad approaches to New Orleans from the south; the Mississippi River below forts Jackson and St. Philip before Farragut's victory; and a plan of Fort Jackson. Original blind stamped pebbled brown cloth 2 107 pp. titles stamped in gilt on the front cover plus two colored frontispiece plates and three folding maps. This copy is inscribed on the verso of the first frontispiece plate "Presented by Rear Admiral D.G. Farragut to Acting Master Chas. J. Gibbs." Gibbs served under Farragut on the steam-sloop Richmond and the inscription is almost certainly in Gibbs's own hand noting his receipt of the book from Farragut. Laid into this copy is a small albumen photograph of Farragut's flagship The Hartford with a number of men standing in the foreground. This volume collects a slew of official reports on the highly important Union Navy victories at the mouth of the Mississippi in April 1862 as Farragut captured key Confederate forts on his way to seizing New Orleans. More than two dozen reports from a variety of naval officers describe the six days of ferocious mortar bombardments and the rebel responses a display of firepower that historian James McPherson calls "the greatest fireworks display in American history." The operations that resulted in the capture of forts Jackson and St. Philip and the bombardment and surrender of New Orleans are described in detail. Other reports give casualty figures discuss the disposition of Confederate captives and relate coastal surveys. The plates show the Confederate ironclads Louisiana and Manassas partly submerged in water the latter vessel on fire "as she appeared in passing the 'Harriet Lane' after receiving a broadside from the 'Mississippi.'" The maps include a detailed view of the water and railroad approaches to New Orleans from the south; the Mississippi River below forts Jackson and St. Philip before Farragut's victory; and a plan of Fort Jackson. The well-executed maps and illustrations are all by the Bowen firm of Philadelphia. A volume desirable for its reports of a significant turning point in the Civil War the photograph of Farragut's flagship laid-in and the presentation from Farragut to one of his lieutenants. Expertly rebacked in matching cloth with title page and plates repaired along inner margin and small tears in the maps neatly mended with minor loss by a master paper conservator. This is the first full post-Civil War Register which also included information on 'Volunteer" officers. A Navy Directory formerly the Navy List or Naval Register is an official list of naval officers their ranks and seniority the ships which they command or to which they are appointed etc. that is published by the government or naval authorities of a country. The Navy List fulfills an important function in international law in that warships are required by article 29 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to be commanded by a commissioned officer whose name appears in the appropriate service list. Past copies of the Navy List are also important sources of information for historians and genealogists. The list in the United States Navy is the Naval Register which now is updated online on a continuous basis.
