Overall contents well preserved. <br/><br/>The classroom lecture notebook of an unnamed cadet at The United States Army School of Aeronautics at Ohio State University Columbus OH covering January through March 1918. During WWI a pilot shortage in the United States became apparent. In response the War Department and U.S. Army formed the Aviation Cadet Training Program installing aviation training schools at six universities across the country. This program at Ohio State appears to have consisted of 8 weeks of classes with training in military drill discipline and technical instruction with an emphasis on aviation. Curriculum from the program formed the basis for the aeronautical engineering courses later taught at OSU. A scarce set of materials from an early instructional program of military aviation training and education one that would eventually become the US Air Force. np hardcover books

X-29 aircraft featuring one of the more unusual designs in aviation history were flown at NASA Ames-Dryden Flight Research Facility The demonstrators investigated advanced concepts and technologies during a multi-phased program conducted from 1984 to 1992 provided an engineering database that is available for the design and development of future aircraft."; photographs include the jet on the tarmac official handshakes with company representatives the X-29 in the hangar workers Mr. Fink & Mr. Harenberg taking turns sitting in the cockpit the assembly line plant photographs and an impressive aerial view of the Grumman manufacturing and testing grounds; photographs not credited presumably by a company photographer and dated via internal evidence; 8" x 10" size approx. size photographs; all in the original imprinted official Grumman blue plastic hardcover three-ring binder; each photograph loosely inserted two to a protective sleeve; a few of the sleeves chipped and worn; the photographs clean clearly-taken and in very good condition; an interesting visual record of this experimental jet aircraft at its inception and the involvement of politicians in promoting the aerospace and military. One printed sheet of grey-green paper folded once vertically. 4 pp. 9-3/8" x 5-3/4" <br/><br/>Claude Grahame-White was the Glamour Boy of early aviation. somewhat of a playboy with no engineering background whatsoever Grahame-White became enamoured of flying when in 1908 he saw the Wright's demonstrate their invention to the French crowds at Camp d’Auvours. Within a relatively short time self-taught Grahame-White soloed his Blériot without a formal lesson. He quickly made a name for himself as a dashing aviator when in 1910 J. V. Martin of the Harvard Aeronautical Society invited him to compete in the first Boston-Harvard Meet. With the promise of a $50000 retainer & expenses Grahame-White accepted. Grahame-White won that one and others as he thrilled spectators with his races & aerial exhibitions such as that announced in this "One-man Show" program. This rare survivor lists the divers aerial stunts to be performed by Grahame-White during the day. "With the Bleriot Monoplane" includes a dive from 4000 feet "with engine stopped." "With the Farman Biplane" the 12 planned events include "Aerial switchback flying" "The corkscrew glide spin from a high altitude." & "Knocking down ninepins placed on the ground without alighting." With this sort of exhibition and his dashing & flamboyant personality the handsome Grahame-White gave the new aviation field previously dominated by engineers something that had been lacking to date. a 'sexy' nature. unknown books

Sturtevant Co. of Hyde park Boston Mass. was a big engineering firm even before the advent of the new science of aeronautics. Whilst the First World War was raging in Europe The Sturtevant Aeroplane Co. 1915-1918 was formed by the parent company to develop military aircraft. . They produced a number of aircraft for both the army and the navy in particular the "Battle" S4 aeroplane of naval type and the USN bought 12 of those machines whose inner structure was all metal a rather innovative approach for the time applied by Mr. Grover Loening Sturtevant's chief designer. . however it wasn't an elegant nor fast nor agile aircraft." The company also "designed developed and produced a number of high quality high performance aero engines. The 5A here advertised was only produced through 1917. It was "was installed in the Sturtevant S-4 and some L.W.F. V-1 training airplanes used by the Signal Corps at North Island Calif. and Mineola New York. Neither of these airplanes was too successful . Part of their difficulty resulted from the 5A engine which weighed more than 3.5 pounds per horsepower." sturtivant.org. De Jong supporting the aircraft's development & use original publication source not identified. 19 glossy b/w still photographs 8-1/2" x 11" <br/><br/>The F-111 Aardvark was an "American supersonic medium-range interdictor and tactical attack aircraft that also filled the roles of strategic nuclear bomber aerial reconnaissance and electronic-warfare aircraft in its various versions. The word 'aardvark' is Afrikaan for 'earthpig' and reflects the look of the long nose of the aircraft that might remind one of the nose of the aardvark. Developed in the 1960s by General Dynamics it entered service in 1967 with the United States Air Force. <br /> <br />The F-111 pioneered several technologies for production aircraft including variable-sweep wings afterburning turbofan engines and automated terrain-following radar for low-level high-speed flight. Its design influenced later variable-sweep wing aircraft and some of its advanced features have since become commonplace." Wiki <br /> <br />While the US transitioned to other aircraft in the late '90s the F-111 continued in service with the RAAF until December 2010. <br /> <br />As Mr. Cosby's introductory note states "These photographs portray the sequence of events of 21 December 1964." No doubt only a limited number of these binders were made mostly likely for visiting dignitaries which makes this a rare promotional photodocumentary of the F-111A's first flight. <br /> <br />At the time of cataloguing we find no copies elsewhere in the market nor listed on OCLC. Stiff paper binder with printed label on upper cover bound with brads. A few creases and nicks to the binder with a slight bump to the upper tip of the first leaves. A very good copy.<br/><br/>The frontispiece is a folding photographically produced chart; there are five original mounted photographs approximately 4 x 5 inches or the reverse. A very early prospectus or annual report for the purpose of a public stock offering by Fairchild following the founding of the firm in 1924. The frontispiece is a chart of the various divisions of Fairchild and a portion of this report is devoted to the Fairchild Aerial Camera Corporation which was among the most significant pioneers of aerial photography; several of their planes were designed specifically for use in aerial photography. The photographs illustrate the "K-8" aerial mapping camera and the manufacturing facilities. Unpaginated though 16 pages. 8vo. 8-5/8" x 4-1/8" <br/><br/>A rare trade catalogue from this firm first organized in 1908 by Edson Gallaudet forming the first aircraft engineering office. In 1910 he established Gallaudet Engineering Company to build planes under contract. In 1917 he reorganized as Gallaudet Aircraft Corporation which as its first product in 1918 mass produced Curtis floatplanes. In 1923 the firm was sold to Major Rueben Fleet and became part of Consolidated Aircraft. This promotional booklet describes the Gallaudet Chummy Flyabout Sport Model a two-seater powered by two 18 h.p. pusher-type motors. at the bargain price of $3500. Clara Adams was a wealthy widow who took up air travel in its early days setting records for transatlantic flights and circumnavigation as a commercial airline passenger. In doing so she helped popularize flying as a safe and comfortable way to travel. She was friends with many famous women of aviation including pilots Amelia Earhart Alys McKey Bryant and Thea Rasche. This collection includes three photographs with Earhart and one with Rasche some with holograph inscriptions. Also present are items related to the captain of the Graf Zeppelin Hugo Eckener; a rare Ohio hobbyist magazine; and a curious leaflet advertising light art Clavilux recitals. An unusual collection collected by Adams and showing her range of interests. <br /> <br /> Contents arranged chronologically:<br /> <br /> Sproul William Cameron. ALS. Postmark: Dec 8 1927. Single leaf 2 pp.; together with envelope. Sproul was a governor of Pennsylvania he writes to Adams that he is staying at a hunting lodge in Virginia and quite unwell. Here the two men are pictured before take off in the Wright 1910 Model B Flyer. The years 1909-1910 were of monumental importance for the Wright brothers and for the history of aviation as Orville made a series of highly publicized exhibition flights in the U.S. and Wilbur in France which would demonstrate to the world the magnificence of their accomplishment. unknown books
