190919735<p><strong>Extremely rare document containing the rules for the kite contest organized to mark the inauguration of Port-Aviation on May 23 1909.</strong></p><p>The text dated May 13 1909 was written by Hugues Malenfer General Secretary of the Société d'Encouragement à l'Aviation which organized the contest.<br />It is indicated that this leaflet was distributed to subscribers of <em>L'Echo du Cerf-Volant</em> one of the first aeronautical magazines founded and directed by the young Georges Houard 1893-1964. This document comes from his papers.<br />Houard went on to become one of the great names in the aviation press publishing Les Ailes from 1921 to 1960.</p><p><strong>A touching document on the competition of little pioneers to inaugurate the world's first aerodrome at one of the very first international airshows.</strong><br />The kite contest was no mere anecdote either as the wind blew hard and the pilots were unable to fly as much as they would have liked. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin both American landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20 1969 at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours after landing on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft and collected 47.5 pounds 21.5 kg of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface. Significant discussion of the testing of the Wright Brothers aircraft in September 1908 at Fort Myer VA. Includes the Army request for proposals and specifications for both the aeroplane and dirigible aircraft. This specification resulted in the first U.S. military aircraft contract. Quarto 31pp. A crisp clean copy near fine in the publisher's blue stapled wrappers with rough-cut edges stamped in light blue and gold. Staples rusted but sound and the folding plate depicting the enormous Goodyear factory partly loosened from the binding but still attached and intact. Else clean and sound with a very faint flattened crease and contemporary penciled owner's name to the front wrap. An exceptional catalogue of airships blimps and accessories manufactured and sold by Goodyear; a century later still the primary American company associated with blimps. As the technology was so new to the public at the time of publication there are nearly a dozen pages devoted to describing the principles of airship aviation and mechanics. Models with specifications descriptions and photographs presented include UA Tein Motored Pusher UB Twin Motored Airship Type A Pony Blimp Type FA Tractor Type FC Pusher and Type V Airship. Other balloons described includekite balloons spherical balloons and gas containers.<br /> <br /> Airship technology was developed by Goodyear and Goodrich in cooperation with the US Navy at the tail end of World War I. As such this is probably the earliest comprehensive marketing document for airships offered by Goodyear or any American blimp company and we could not locate an earlier Goodyear trade catalogue for airships or accessories in OCLC. That database lists about half a dozen holdings mostly at regional non-specializing institutions except for two copies at the Smithsonian. <br /> <br /> Without prices or obvious ordering instructions this catalogue was clearly meant more as a "show off" marketing piece and it is quite effective as such even to the modern reader. There can be no question that the Hindenburg disaster of 1937 did much to kill this otherwise promising transportation technology. <br /> <br /> Scarce in the trade. Folder with multiple inserts The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a research development and flight center owned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and operated by the California Institute of Technology. JPL's primary responsibility is the investigation of the solar system with automated scientific spacecraft. The Laboratory's activities however are not limited to space exploration. The basic research and development in support of space exploration involves a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines; the resulting technological and managerial capabilities are finding increasing application to medical and environmental problems on earth especially in the area of solar energy research. To provide spacecraft tracking and communications for deep-space missions JPL designed developed and manages the Deep Space Network DSN with stations in California Spain and Australia. The twin Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft are exploring where nothing from Earth has flown before. Continuing on their more-than-40-year journey since their 1977 launches they each are much farther away from Earth and the sun than Pluto. In August 2012 Voyager 1 made the historic entry into interstellar space the region between stars filled with material ejected by the death of nearby stars millions of years ago. Voyager 2 entered interstellar space on November 5 2018 and scientists hope to learn more about this region. Both spacecraft are still sending scientific information about their surroundings through the Deep Space Network or DSN. The primary mission was the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. After making a string of discoveries there — such as active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io and intricacies of Saturn's rings — the mission was extended.
