18892994
The remarkably rare true first edition of 1889 of occult mystic A E Waite's as Grand Orient occult handbook on fortune telling with playing cards published at the height of the Victorian occult revival. The condition is far from perfect these handbooks were published to be used! but all pages including fold out chart are present and the book is so vanishingly rare in any state. Part of the late nineteenth century's surge of interest in magic the occult spiritualism and esoteric traditions. These handbooks were published as 'how to' guides and such tend to as here have some scribbled pencil number work present on some pages. These can be erased but we have currently left them in place as part of the original book's appeal. Please see photos to get a better idea of the condition of this copy which is described as follows. Pages are all present though some are not totally secure by any means mainly the initial sequence of pages which is attached but loosely. This is eminently repairable and this copy is priced down to reflect this. Actual page quality however is generally good bright and clean with just some age wear on some pages and no apparent page loss at all. ALL pages are present and in sequence including the Wheel of Destiny and the wonderful fold out Golden Wheel. The latter is unattached and we assume was always so it is worn with use and has a couple of minor tears though no loss please see photos. All 114 pages are present as well as the 15 page excerpt from Don Quijote de la Mancha and various ads for occult and tarot literature. Covers are quite clean with one or two smudges on the striking front cover. Most text on the spine has been rubbed away over time. While far from perfect this is a very good copy given its context. When buying please be aware of its condition and do ask any questions we can help with. To summarise the condition: cons are that the internal binding is sketchy and negligible in some cases and that the fold-out page is quite well used; pros are that all pages are present and in pretty decent condition for this the true first edition. A very rare item. See photos all of which are of the copy for sale we don't use stock photos. More photos available please just ask. Note that in some photos we have intentionally moved the loose text block apart to show the gap and looseness to binding in places
George Redway hardcover
188934755London: George Redway 1889. First edition. Cloth bound covers in very good condition; Frontis just barely still attached; Wheel of Destiny chart has arithmetic scribbles on it and has upper corner piece torn away but present and second tear tears are not affecting the Chart; Inner hinge cracked in two places with intervening signature a bit loose. 6 1/2" x 4"; Frontis folding chart The Golden Wheel of Fortune; Tipped in chart The Wheel of Destiny; viii 114 pages plus six pages of ads plus 15 page excerpt from Don Quijote de la Mancha plus 1 page ad for a catlogue of Literature of Occultism. A very rare item. R.A. Gilbert assumes this is a revision of a book by Olney Richmond published in 1863 . This seems unlikelt as Richmond was born in 1844 and served in the Civil War. His known books were published in the 1890's. George Redway unknown
