Russian Great Game map from official intelligence First created in 1863 as Russia began its concerted expansion into the Central Asian khanates considerably upping the stakes in the Great Game this map covers an area bounded by Lake Urma Iran in the West into the Akmolinskaya Oblast in the North Tien-Shan in the East and as far as the Gulf of Oman and Balochistan in the South. It was updated through the following decades to include the latest conquests here Bukhara - reduced to vassal status in 1868 - and Khiva - a protectorate from 1873 - are included in Russian Turkestan. This map formed the basis of W. H. Allen's Russian Official Map of Central Asia of 1877 which was also reproduced in Demetrius Boulger's England and Russia in Central Asia 1879. Uncommon and highly attractive. Folding engraved map 1060 x 950 mm hand-coloured in outline 24 panels mounted on linen. Light browning two small library stamps verso some place-names underlined in pencil crayon. else very good. unknown
