Hongwu Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang ruled for 30 years and was buried at Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum on the Purple Mountain in the east of Nanjing. <br /> <br /> Zhu Yuanzhang ended the Mongol led Yuan dynasty. He is known for rebuilding a country ravaged by war supporting agriculture reducing taxes and establishing laws protecting the property of peasants.<br /> <br /> 4 x 5 5/6" b&w corners/edges slt. rubbed. unknown

Engraving published during the months prior to the attack on and four year occupation of Canton Guangzhou by allied British and French troops during the time of the Second Opium War. Fine engraving prepared for "The Illustrated London News". <br> <br>The commentary relates the attack of a British engineer the inspector of lighthouses. The recently completed lighthouse unfortunately not shown provoked resentment in the local population as the workers has been brought from Ningbo. The commentary also mentions the recent murder of the British diplomat Augustus Raymond Margary and his staff in February 1875 whilst scoping potential overland trade routes between British India and China's provinces provoked a diplomatic crisis with China. <br> <br>From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. . Two engravings published during the months prior to the attack on and four year occupation of Canton Guangzhou by allied British and French troops during the time of the Second Opium War. 1890234021890. Very good overall. Card printed in English and Chinese with the name of the establishment in an elaborate type font. The company had locations in Chinkiang Nanking Wuhu and Kiukiang. It records "Bum Boat General Store Keepers Butcher & Bakers Commission Agents & c and Coal Merchants". <br /> <br /> This card hails from the period following the Treaty of Tianjin which ended the Second Opium War opened more Chinese ports to foreign trade and allowed foreign legations in the Chinese capital. "Bum boats" were small water taxis and boats used for short trips.<br /> <br /> Chinese text in 2 vertical columns to left and right of English text. Removed from an album with black paper adhering to verso. 4 1/4 x 2 3/4" unknown

An albumen photograph of an ancient Canton Guangzhou landmark known as the Five Storey pagoda once part of the city wall which still stands today in the city's largest park Yue Xiu Park. The pagoda also known as Zhenhai Tower was built in 1380 by Zhu Liangzu during the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 and stands on the Yuexiu Hill. It is 92 feet high and has been destroyed and rebuilt five times. The building now houses the City Museum which exhibits the history of Canton from Neolithic times. 5 1/2 x 4".
