Conjoined triptych of ink and watercolour woodblock prints trimmed to the margins together 35 x 63.3 cms backed onto Japanese scrap paper with some writing title and descriptive cartouches top right red censor's stamp lower left and artist's signature lower right some paper abrasions wear at the joins slight bleeding of ink and offsetting on the verso but overall in good condition. Vivid depiction of the Battle of Seonghwan also known as the battle of Asan in Korea July 29 1894 the first major land battle on of the Sino-Japanese War 1894-1895. Chinese troops are seen fleeing the charging Japanese marines and the silhouettes of airborn casualties are depicted in the bright orange explosion. <br> <br>Yōsai Nobukazu 1872-1944 was active towards the very end of the ukiyo-e period when the popular days of this style were over. Printmakers like Yōsai struggled and he survived as an artist by depicting the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. Yōshū Chikanobu was his teacher active 1838-1912 and Yōsai Nobukazu was considered his best student. The majority of his prints were triptychs of battles of the Sino-Japanese war. Covers damp damaged with some showing mould staining string on first volume broken in one place but binding still sound very occasional light spotting contents. Lower edge of all volumes and upper edge of 3 volumes are titled in ink. Although the condition of the bindings are poor the maps and woodblock printed text are very good. A Japanese edition of Jūhasshiryaku 十八史略 Shi ba shi lue in pinyin with extra notes added by Confucian scholar Fujisawa Nangaku 藤澤南岳 1842-1920. Rackemann in ink on cover and in small pencil script at the base '11/9/73 Goodspeeds' the noted Boston Book and Print Seller.<br /> <br /> 9 cartoon series in the original envelope with story by Bret Harte and cartoons by Joseph Hull. Numbered cartoons with text below depict a card game between 2 western miners "Truthful James" and "Bill Nye" and a Chinese "Ah Sin" in which the Chinese is more proficient at cheating at cards and for which he is beaten by a mob. With the line ""Can this be We are ruined by cheap Chinese labor". <br /> <br /> 5 x 7 1/4 in cards in original envelope with ink inscription with a small bookseller's stamp laid in "Burnton's 92 Fourth Av" and with an inscription at the upper right 'Charlie Rackemann from Uncle Ell'. Detailed map prepared for the Lyon Chamber of Commerce Mission to China under the direction of a young Henri Brenier 1867-1962 with the purpose of advancing French colonial expansion and shoring up the interests of the dominant Lyon silk trade. <br> <br>The map shows the principal centres of population production waterways roads telegraph lines and railroads togther with the centres of production and distribution for coal iron tin gold and silver opium tea rice sugar peanuts cinnamon wool medicinal plants and leather. The trade mission was organized following the Treaty of Shimonoseki and the end of the Sino-Japanese War: the Chamber of Commerce of Lyon understood that end of this war would signal a profound economic development and change. . NOTE: the first half of this volume was used as a scrapbook and has at least 32 engravings of scenes military men and literary person glued to the pages not affecting the map which is bound in place. <br/><br/>This map is a variant of the original map which appeared in the third volume of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. That map measures 14 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches and has titles in Chinese ideograms and in English. THIS MAP has names in English or the English equivalent of the Chinese identifications. This map accompanies an article "MIscellany" with sub-title " Canton and the River Tigris " another section of which is "The Physical and Moral evils inflicted on the Chinese by a Christian people for the love of gain". More of the entry discusses at length the problems of opium as previously described in the Calcutta Christian Observer with supporting remarks. Rev. Bridgman was the editor of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. He was the first American Protestant Christian missionary sent to China and America's first Sinologist. NOTE: This volume also includes missionary reports by Rev. Decorated emerald-green publisher’s cloth gilt & black ornament borders lettering front cover & spine patterned endpapers uniform interior toning throughout as typical with 19th-Century Hurst publications still a VG copy from the library of David Kohl 1946-2025 former art teacher at the Hong Kong International School musician artist and historian. First Hurst edition of this well-written memoir first published in 1869 by Robert Carter detailing her life as a Presbyterian missionary to China with husband John Nevius 1829-1893 after first sailing for China in March 1853 arriving in Ningbo Hangzhou Yantai then Chefoo in China’s Shandong Province. The couple’s efforts included diligently learning the Chinese language setting up schools for Chinese women and young female children coping with Cholera outbreaks warlords bandits and setting up schools. One particular section of the memoir focuses on preparing tea and tea leaves for market and how the varieties were determined as well as traveling up the Yangtze River. Despite her frequent illnesses Helen Nevius 1833-1910 devoted considerable time and support into her husband John’s development of the “Nevius Method†of missionary efforts in China whihc emphasized personal evangelism Bible centric instruction self-propagation and self-government encouraging local fundraising church and mission building and cooperation with other missionaries along with continually building and expanding schools which received partial subsidies. They were frequently apart for extended periods due to her frequent poor health and over 40 years returning to the U.S. from China due to incapacity and overwork. He was also a distributor of Chinese language Christian literature in Shanghai and region from 1847. <br> <br>At the General Conference of the Protestant Missionaries of China held at Shanghai May 10th to 24th 1877 he presented this work which was then published in a revised edition in 1878. There exist images of the Members of the Missionary Conference in two group photographs those engaged in Mission work for over ten years and those engaged in Mission work for under ten years which is reproduced in 'History of Photography in China Western Photographers 1861-1879' by Terry Bennett Quaritch 2010 on page 135 the Reverend Yates is not present but his wife is. . This atmospheric image of the fort with a junk and a yacht sailing in the river in the foreground is from the official account of the Laplace voyage in the Favorite 1830-32 by voyage artist François-Edmond Pâris 1806-1893. 18802592Havana: September 8 1880. Very good. Partially-printed broadside 6.5 x 8.25 inches completed in manuscript in Spanish and Chinese. Small marginal wormhole mild edge wear light toning. Ink stamp of the Consulado General at bottom-center. A scarce certificate issued in 1880 by the Chinese Consulate in Havana authenticating the registration and details of a Chinese laborer in Cuba. The printed form is completed in manuscript with the name of the recipient his age place of origin occupation and place of residence. The present examples were completed for a sixty-year-old laborer from Canton being called Pedro Pulido who was going to work and/or live at 48 Calle Figueroa in Havana. The printed text states that "El Cónsul General de China en la Habana certifica que blank ha hecho constar en este Consulado General ser súbdito de S.M. el Emperador de la China y como tal se halla inscrito en el Registro de dicho Consulado General segun número y filiacion anotados al márgen." The certificate is dated September 8 1880 and is stamped with the seal of the consulate in red and with the rubberstamped signature of the Consul General Lin Liang Yuan. The form are also bears two ink signatures in Chinese in the left margin a rare occurrence. An excellent document of the bureaucracy surrounding imported Chinese labor to Cuba in the last quarter of the 19th century. September 8 unknown

1812137350Paris 1812. Fine detailed nineteenth century map of China by Dano-French geographer Conrad Malte-Brun. One page. In near fine condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 14.75 inches. Dano-French geographer and journalist Conrad Malte-Brun sometimes referred to simply as Malte-Brun is perhaps best remembered for coining the name for the geographic region Oceania French Océanie around 1812 as well as the name Indo-China. He was the founder of Les Annales des Voyages in 1807 and Les Annales des Voyages de la Géographie et de l'Histoire in 1819 which encouraged observations and reports as a basis for research. He became well known after contributing Tableau de la Pologne a treatise on the geography of Poland in 1807 as the First Empire troops established French tutelage in the region. In 1822-1824 he served as the first general secretary of the newly founded Société de Géographie. unknown

It was published first in French edited by Jean-Pierre Abel-Remusat. The translation into German was made by Gottfried Wilhelm Becker. Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat 1788 - 1832 was the first professor at the College de France for Sinologie and is still known today for the publishing of a Chinese peom "Iu-kiao-li ou les deux cousines roman chinois" . unknown

Lindley 1840 -1873 British officer writer and adventurer who fought for the Taiping insurgents in their rebellion against the Manchu dynasty one of the largest and bloodiest civil wars in history. The Taiping Rebellion 1850-64 was instigated by Hong Xiuquan and his followers whose goal was to create a "Heavenly Kingdom" in China with Christianity as the official religion. Lindley was a Royal Navy officer stationed in Hong Kong who resigned his commission in 1860 to work for a Taiping general as an artillery instructor. He also became a spokesperson for the cause courting Western support and procuring weapons and supplies. His wife Maria the daughter of the Portuguese consul at Macau served in the rebellion as a sniper and was killed in an ambush. Lindley remained in China until the fall of the Heavenly Kingdom in 1864. Two years later he wrote this work the only detailed account written of the Taiping Rebellion from the rebels' perspective.<br /> <br /> Two volumes royal 8vo: Vol I xvii iii 424pp; Vol II: vii i 425-842 complete. Folding color frontispiece 20 chromolithographs 9 wood engravings two folding maps. 1862220053Japan.: 山田屋庄次郎. Yamada Shōjirō. Bunkyu 1 1862. Colour woodblock print 37.2 x 25.3 cms the sheet a little age-toned a spot of browning at the foot and a pinhole in the upper margin but the image unaffected very good condition. This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora is an excellent example of Yokohama-e Yokohama Prints which were very popular in Japan after the country was opened in the mid-19th century. Yokohama was one of the trading ports with the outside world and many foreigners were residing in the area. The Yokohama-e was very similar to the Nagasaki-e Nagasaki Prints and depicted people and cultures which were foreign to the Japanese. Utagawa Yoshitora was active between the end of Edo Period to the mid-Meiji Period and produced numerous Nishiki-e prints including Yokohama-e in his career. He was regarded as one of the top Nishiki-e artists around that time. <br> <br>In this print a Western man is strolling outside with his dog and a Mongolian boy who carries an umbrella for him. The man is observing something in the distance and about to jot down something in his notebook with a pen which he holds in his right hand.
