190225959Shanghai: Brewer & Co. Booksellers 1902. Good overall. Three full back postcards of Shanghai published in Shanghai with blue images entitled "Honan Road Shanghai" "Tea House Native City Shanghai" and "Loong Hwa Pagoda near Shanghai". Brewer & Co are recorded in a 1904 edition of "The Directory and Chronicle for China ." as being located at 31 Nanking Road.<br /> <br /> The author who signs his postcards "D" is evidently a Shanghai photographer: he writes that he worked until 10 o'clock the previous night on the photographs but worries that there is something wrong with the plates. "There are a great many little holes in them -- some not so little. But I think there ought to be a few good results." There is a D. MacLennan listed as in the employ of Chinese Maritime Customs Service Index first appointed in July 1891 as a Watcher and retired in Apr 1928 as Chief Tide Surveyor and Harbour Master in Ningpo. Ancestry. <br /> <br /> Two are signed with the initial "D" the third signed "L. Ross". All are addressed to a Miss MacLennan at 2 addresses in Scotland: 11 Thirlestane Road Edinburgh and at Eglinton Wellington Road Nairn.<br /> <br /> 5 1/2 x 3 3/4" a few corner defects a diagonal crack in the Honan Road postcard extending a small distance into the image. 1920159291920. Twelve hand-colored cards depicting various Chinese trades and scenes. Not dated 20th century. Watercolors of indeterminate age with captions in English. Cards depict trades such as "Barber" "Knife and Scissor Sharpener" "Yellow Rice Cake Seller" "Dealer in Chicken and Ducks" "Waste Watter Arrier" sic & "Vegetable Vender" sic. Others show scenes or methods of transport including "Chinese Wedding Chair" "Peking Cart" "Transport Outside the Great Wall" "Chinese Donkey" "The harrier" & "Chinese Meal Grinding." These cards were certainly produced by amateur artists to be sold to tourists in China. Manila stock each approximately 3 3/4 x 2 1/4". Clean and fine. unknown

Charming children's volume with fine chromolithographic illustrations of circus acts all with horses and clowns some on stilts and scenes of juggling. Includes verses such as "Dancing Horses" and "The Chinese Juggler" illustrated with a Chinese man standing on a dark horse while spinning baskets on poles above his head. 4to 14pp. Illustrated paper wraps with title in gilt red and blue at front cover no title at spine. First editions of these very scarce China Inland Mission periodicals published for supporters and as fundraiser during the 1920s for the noted interdenominational missionary society originally founded by Hudson Taylor in 1865. The 1920s were a period of great unrest famine and ongoing conflicts between various warlords as reflected in these contemporary missionary accounts. The China Inland Mission actively recruited women missionaries who in turn often proselytized to Chinese women to promote Christianity public health measures increased education and more. These issues have a number of letters and first-hand accounts of the ongoing internal battles between the Nationalist forces of Chiang-kai Shek and Mao-tse-tung’s Communists. 1905210394China and England.: King's Messengers S.P.G. circa1905. Small Chinese figure 17 x 6 cms padded silk brocade paper hair and watercolour the painted face a little scuffed mounted onto stiff card and backed onto what appears to be the verso of a certificate or exercise book cover trimmed and creased with a repaired tear and a few minor abrasions printed with the text "King's Messengers S.P.G./ Rugby Branch. / Passed Examination in Missionary Knowledge. Secretary. Chaplain. 19." all blank the figure with a loop at the head for display or hanging very good clean condition. The King's Messengers were the children's branch of a Church of England Missionary Society: S.P.G. "The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts". Presumably the delicately made figure was constructed at a Society mission in China S.P.G. sent missionaries to China in 1895 and at some point glued to the backing. A loop at the top suggests that the figure was intended to hang free. The doll-like figure represents an unusual example of folk art. . King's Messengers, S.P.G. unknown

Lacks the original wrappers and the August issue but extremely clean and firm. 29 x 21cm. Very good. The Journal of the American Asiatic Association began in 1898 an American publication with the aim of promoting commerce and cultural exchange between the US and eastern Asia and Oceania. In 1917 Willard Straight who had been involved in promoting American trade and investment in Korea and China since the turn of the century and his wife Dorothy Payne Whitney Straight bought the magazine and renamed it Asia. <br> <br>An editorial in the Journal explained: "The ignorance of our people in regard to the countries of the Far East is unquestionably a serious obstacle to the legitimate extension of American influence." Unsurprisingly racist sentiments are prevalent throughout! <br> <br>The April issues features striking illustrations of Boat-Life in Kashmir from the original lithigraphs of Brunhilde Chesney.
