Slightly faded cloth covered boards lettered in gilt viii 347pp top edge gilt endpapers and first and last leaves foxed with some scattered foxing throughout gilt armorial seal on the front paste down. A good firm copy of a scarce title. Frederick Arthur McKenzie a Canadian-born journalist reported extensively on East Asian affairs during the early decades of the 20th century. Notably he was among the rare Western correspondents granted access to cover the Russo-Japanese War from within Japanese ranks. Later he documented the Korean struggle against Japanese imperial control offering a rare Western perspective on the resistance movements that emerged during Japan’s occupation of Korea. First editions of these very scarce China Inland Mission periodicals published for supporters and as fundraiser during the 1920s for the noted interdenominational missionary society originally founded by Hudson Taylor in 1865. The 1920s were a period of great unrest famine and ongoing conflicts between various warlords as reflected in these contemporary missionary accounts. The China Inland Mission actively recruited women missionaries who in turn often proselytized to Chinese women to promote Christianity public health measures increased education and more. These issues have a number of letters and first-hand accounts of the ongoing internal battles between the Nationalist forces of Chiang-kai Shek and Mao-tse-tung’s Communists. In addition there are a few special mentions that the “Christian†Chinese are the most resistant to the Communists forces. Of special interest are the inclusion and special centerfold supplements of the Young China magazine which was issued for children in the China Inland Mission and young children in China. Collection of eight colour-printed Nianhua posters the central images onlaid within a stiff red paper border with a thin cream paper frame worn and discoloured and at the top of each a fine aqua paper border; the sheets a little creased two of the images with a visible tide-mark minor edge tears not affecting the images strengthened neatly on the verso with washi one with an early paper repair to the verso of the margin approx. 93 x 51.5cms sheet size in good condition. Eight Nianhua posters six feature traditional narrative tales one based on a woodblock print one possibly of a movie heroine and one other features a pair of chubby toddlers holding a tray of peaches and flowers symbols of longevity and abundance. . unknown

This volume is a collection of 55 translations of old Chinese songs sketches inscriptions and impressions. <br>A handwritten dedication to L. Colour poster for performances of the 中華人民共和國藝術團 in 1978 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium. 106.5 x 76cm text in both English and traditional Chinese characters. The printed poster image is in red blue green black and white and the performance venue and times beneath the image appear to have been stencilled on later in black ink. The left edge minor creasing and a few small tears left edge not affecting image; some soft creasing in places tiny thumb tack holes in corners. Good condition with colours still vibrant. This landmark tour in 1978 by the Performing Arts Company of the PRC marked the first cultural exchange between China and the U.S. after the normalisation of relations just a few months earlier.The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles California at 665 W. Jefferson Boulevard was the location of the third major city performance on the tour after New York and Washington.
