The first view is of the Bund of Oura - the waterfront where westerners were allowed with Sampans in the water. The Second view is "Oni no Jere" The Temple of Devils on a hillside. Both cards are in Very Good condition with some beginning tidemarking / foxing to the edges. "A series of encounters between the West and Japan in the 1850s ended Japan's isolationist trade policies. In particular the treaty with Russia signed on February 7 1855 established Nagasaki as an open port and further granted extraterritoriality privileges to foreigners living in Japan. These encounters finally culminated in 1859 when the Ansei Treaties and in particular the Harris Treaty with the United States took effect. These treaties demanded immediate opening of ports and also established generally unequal trade relationships between the Western powers and Japan. In 1860 development of the area around Oura Creek began; by August 15 1862 Japanese officials ordered foreign residents of Nagasaki into this new settlement area." . No Publisher Listed. unknown

Spine and fore-edge of upper board slightly darkened a few minute flakes to lowest spine compartment but the binding extremely well preserved with very lustrous boards. Final 10 leaves slightly creased one repaired marginal tear but still A FINE COPY INTERNALLY exceptionally bright smooth and entirely fresh and clean.<br/> <br/> This generously proportioned production illustrated with 13 vibrant colored plates is a rare European account of Japan during the period in which the country was "closed" to the west offered here in its first English edition. Originally published in French in 1820 "Illustrations of Japan" is comprised of a history and description of the Tokugawa shogunate which Titsingh had translated from the Japanese plus Titsingh's own observations on the language customs and ceremonies of the Japanese people. The present English edition is accompanied by plates in etching and aquatint enhanced with hand coloring. Our author Dutch diplomat Isaac Titsingh 1745-1812 spent 14 years in Nagasaki for the Dutch East India company and between 1779-84 he served as trade director-cum-ambassador travelling to Edo now Tokyo for audiences with the shogun and other high officials in the shogunate. Unlike most of his Western contemporaries Titsingh was open-minded and curious about the people he encountered engaging with their art and culture; in fact art historian and Victoria & Albert Museum keeper Edward F. Strange tells us that Titsingh is the earliest known European collector of Japanese prints of which a number appear in the present volume. Our publisher Rudolph Ackermann 1764-1834 made his living issuing sumptuously illustrated books such as the present volume and was an early adopter of color aquatint and lithography technologies; Hardie writes that he was "the great presiding genius before whose magic wand so many pictorial books sprang into existence." In very attractive period morocco this is a particularly appealing copy of the work free of the foxing and offsetting that often plague copies of this and other large-format color illustrated books. Oblong octavo in landscape format. 10 stiff leaves bearing 10 original hand-colored albumen photographs tipped-in and all with printed captions. Photographs measure 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Leaves bound to stubs. Japanese-style except it opens in the Western manner gilt rose and beige brocade cloth with red string tie printed paper cover label. House in the original box with a printed label on one of the sides. Box top with split side joints. Inside front cover with charming Arts & Crafts bookplate of Alice Rosamond Kendall and a pencil presentation to her dated 1902. Book and albumens in beautiful condition. This remarkably scarce little album is almost entirely devoted to rice farming and silk cultivation in Japan. The photographer was likely Tamamura Kozacuro. "Regarded as an originator of "Yokohama shashin" for tourists Tamamura Kozaburo opened his first studio in Tokyo in 1874 and then moved to Yokohama in 1883. For the next 30 years he became one of the most successful and popular commercial photographers in Japan by selling souvenir photograph albums to foreigners and taking profitable commissions from various organizations. He received many awards for his photography before his son Tamamura Kihei took over the business in 1916" Widener Library. The captions are as follows: Ploughing a rice field; Planting rice before Osan Temple Yokohama; Cultivating rice field; Harvesting the rice crop; Farmers threshing rice; Farmer pounding rice; Sorting silkworms; Weighing kuwa leaves for feeding silkworms; Cultivating silkworms; Farmers wearing rain-coats. Fuji from various angles images of Japanese junks and of women preparing dinner. <br>A number of these are well-known images by famous photographers of the day including "Fuji from Kashiwabara" by Enami Tamotsu who opened his photographic business in 1892 "Front of Fall Hakone" by Kajima Seibei 1866-1924 and "Mississipy Bay" a bay near Yokohama by Kusakabe Kimbei 1841-1932. A photograph of the wedding party of the American missionary and author William Jackson Callahan and Martha Taylor Callahan taken at the Kwassui Girls’ School later Kwassui Women’s University in Nagasaki. At the time Taylor was representing the Women’s Board of the Methodist Episcopal Church and serving perhaps as principal of the school which had been started in 1879. Callahan began his work as a teacher in Japan shortly after graduating from Emory in 1890. The two would spend over forty-five years in Japan as missionaries. Ikuta unknown
