Second printing.<br /><br />Thomas Ashe 1770-1835 was born in Dublin Ireland and was a soldier and memoirist. Much of his life was checkered with intrigue and fraud. His Memoirs and Confessions 1815 is an autobiographical account of 'criminal and delinquent' escapades beginning with the seduction of a girl in France. In America he edited the National Intelligencer and was arrested when attempting to steal treasures from churches in Latin America. His Travels in America first appeared in 1806. The narrative chronicles Ashe's travels by flatboat down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in 1806 and is one of the first travelogues written by a foreigner to comment specifically on the American inhabitants of the region. A unrestrained hatred of Americans can be found throughout the work. While the account is interesting and highly readable it was to create quite a stir and added to the wave of anti-British sentiment that would ultimately lead to the War of 1812.</p> Printed Newburyport [Mass.] Reprinted for W. For example he concludes his account of the Nankeen kestrel thus: 'I took four eggs from a tree near our camp and was surprised to find the nest lined with pellets of camel dung. This is probably the first time this material has been used for nest-lining'. First edition.<br /><br />French Guiana French: Guyane française officially Guyane is an overseas department French: département d'outre-mer or DOM of France located on the northern coast of South America. It has borders with two nations Brazil and Suriname. Like the other DOMs French Guiana is also an overseas region of France one of the 26 regions of France. Its currency is the euro. The prefecture is Cayenne. The addition of the adjective "French" comes from colonial times when three such colonies existed: British Guiana now Guyana Dutch Guiana now Suriname and French Guiana. The three are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas. French Guiana was originally inhabited by a number of indigenous American people. It was settled by the French during the 17th century. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763 Louis XV sent 12000 settlers to French Guiana to colonise the region. One and a half years later only a few hundred survived.2 Its infamous Île du Diable Devil's Island was the site of penal settlements from 1852 until 1951. More than 70000 French convicts were deported to French Guiana between 1852 and 1939.3 In 1809 a Portuguese-British naval squadron took French Guiana for the Portuguese Empire. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1814 the region was handed back to the French though a Portuguese presence remained until 1817. A border dispute with Brazil arose in the late nineteenth century over a vast area of jungle leading to the short-lived pro-French independent state of Counani in the disputed territory and some fighting between settlers before the dispute was resolved largely in favor of Brazil by the arbitration of the Swiss government.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Front inner hinge cracked rubbing to hinges and corners some internal foxing else a very good copy. Covers in good shape with only slight bumping gold gilt spine lettering and imprint on front cover. Back cover looks like it was imprinted as well but the gilt is missing. Binding is in excellent shape. Ships daily. Captain William Francis Lynch commander of the 1847 USN expedition to the Dead Sea wrote this chronicle of the journey upon his return to the United States. Hugh entered the Edinburgh excise office as a clerk but from the first devoted his leisure to literary pursuits publishing <i>The Swiss Emigrants</i> in 1804; two philosophical treatises <i>The Morality of Fiction</i> 1805 and <i>Enquiries respecting the Character of Nations</i> 1808; and another romance <i>Corasmin or the Minister</i> in 1814. In 1816 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh to whose <i>Transactions</i> he contributed among other papers one in 1818 <i>On the Ancient Geography of Central and Eastern Asia with Illustrations derived from Recent Discoveries in the North of India</i>. In 1817 he enlarged and completed Dr. Leyden's <i>Historical Account of Discoveries and Travels in Africa</i>. Small old crease just effecting the image but not very visible. A very nice example. very good This wonderful CDV comprises an image of each crew member and the mascot. The central image is of the ship. Souvenir photographs of both the Alert and the Discovery were taken by rival photographers before the departure of the expedition. Both produced CDV copes as well as much larger examples. Although quite small each potrait is very clear and the name of the individual is usually readable with a magnifing glass. Hill 1168 Second and best edition<br /><br />The <i>Alceste</i> brought Lord Amherst to China to serve as ambassador and specifically to negotiate the China trade at the time a matter of dispute between China and Great Britain. M'Leod who was surgeon on the ship describes the voyage out the various calls in the East Indies including touching at Batavia surveying off Korea the visit to Okinawa another to Manila and the shipwreck off the coast of Sumatra and subsequent rescue from Malay pirates. A brief but interesting interview with Napoleon at St. Helena is also included in the narrative. This was one of the most popular travel books of its time portraying the Far East to a much wider audience than had been reached by earlier accounts. The idyllic descriptions of Lewchew undoubtedly appealed to the romantic sensibilities of the era. Indeed buoyed by its success M'Leod published another work recounting his time as a slaver <i>A Voyage to Africa with some Account of the Manners and Customs of the Dahomian People</i>.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Attractive half rebind some foxing through out with no spotting to plates else a very good copy. 1876895260551<p>Excellent condition but missing the original map that was originally included. 11 fine chromolithographic and 11 lithographic plates. Publication of this report was originally intended for 1861 but the Civil War intervened and prevented publication for another fifteen years. The expedition under Macomb went west from Santa Fe across northern New Mexico and Arizona to the Colorado. The whole drainage of the San Juan had been traced and the relationship of that river with the Colorado clearly established. More important they had also established that the Green River united with the Grand to form the Colorado. The entire maze of intricate canyon country had been threaded and its geography revealed for the first time. In addition Newberry was able to establish numerous stratigraphic columns and to trace the Triassic Jurassic and Carboniferous strata far out across the Colorado River. The caption states that about 1000 people took part in the parade which was led by commanding samurai on horseback with a large cannon drawn at the rear. This kawaraban features eight types of headgear worn by American crew members when they arrived in Japan including both ceremonial items and an interpreter's hat. It also illustrates a sword with its sheath alongside a bayonet and a hand-gun. Each item is depicted in meticulous detail reflecting a high level of curiosity about the foreign visitors. . unknown

This kawaraban dated 20 February 1854 elaborates a list of the defending lords following Commodore Perry's second visit to Edo Bay. The chart lists approximately 40 feudal lords mobilised to defend Edo each accompanied by detailed information including their house crests defensive positions and troop numbers. The total mobilisation is noted as around 375600 troops. . unknown
182447632Vol. I has a large partial coloured map as frontis and Vol. II has 3 large folding maps in the rear The record of Franklin's first Arctic expedition fraught with hardship and tragedy constitutes one of the classics in the annals of travel literature. In all the party travelled 5500 miles overland and with the aid of canoes exploring the territory from York Factory to the mouth of the Coppermine River on Coronation Gulf east along the Arctic coast as far as Point Turnagain and back across the Barren Lands. Provisions were poor and scant and on the return journey many crew members died of cold and starvation; the young naval artist Robert Hood was murdered and another executed for the crime. The work also includes accounts by Richardson and Back of the last leg of the desperate journey across the Barren Lands. Small piece missing from outer edge of front wrapper three small and excellent paper repairs to wrappers. A very good and very clean copy in the original wrappers.The heliotypes in this publication are particularly interesting as they show Russian soldiers guarding the graves of the Jeannette crew. The final photograph shows all the coffins loaded into a Russian train."In February 1882 Secretary Thompson had despatched naval lieutenants Giles Harber and William Schuetze to the delta to search for any traces of the lost explorers particularly of Chipp's party. They were unsuccessful but in November received orders from the secretary to supervise the return of the bodies of De Long and his comrades to the United States. Weather and bureaucracy delayed them for a year; finally in November 1883 the bodies were taken from Yakutsk by train to Moscow Berlin and finally Hamburg. Here they were placed on board the U.S. steamer Frisia which arrived in New York in February 1884. The funeral cortège was escorted by naval and military detachments to the Church of the Holy Trinity on Madison Avenue for a memorial service. Afterwards the bodies of Ambler Collins and Boyd were claimed for private burial; those of De Long and six others were taken to Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx and buried together there. In October 1890 a large monument to the expedition's dead was unveiled at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.
