On offer is an original exciting massive archive of correspondence some hand-drawn art other writings including poetry articles postcards photos greeting cards and both terrifying and humorous intimate personal letters news clippings and ephemera relating to and created by Charles Bronson - born Michael Peterson his named was changed by his boxing manager - who is considered to be Britains most feared in/famous and notorious prisoner. He is also the author of ten books a poet armed robber kidnapper philanthropist philosopher boxer award winning fitness expert and former circus strongman. Mr. Bronson was first arrested as a 19 year old in 1974 and has been in prison for 34 years and over 28 years in solitary and has been free less than 120 days in that 34 years. He has been moved over 150 times to and within different prisons. Mr. Bronson has also committed some renowned notorious acts while in prison including a number of spectacular hostage-takings; they include a two day rooftop protest at Broadmoor Prison in 1983 which caused three quarters of a million pounds damage. In a 1994 kidnapping/escape attempt he demanded a helicopter an inflatable doll and a cup of tea as ransom for the release of the guard he was holding at Woodhill Prison. There is a worldwide petition to free Charles Bronson based on the fact that he has suffered an extraordinarily lengthy incarceration while never having killed raped or molested anyone. Free in spirit Mr. Bronsons original conviction of 7 years for armed robbery has blossomed to 34 years due to his numerous prison scrapes with authority. Many organizations for prisoner's rights have declared him a political prisoner making his long term incarceration all the more untenable. This archive is the accumulation of approximately 15 years by a woman who at one time was engaged to be married to Mr. Bronson. As such the correspondence is of an intimate nature on all levels of Mr. Bronsons personal and penal life; relationships activities hardships with all of its tragedies and comedies. Further correspondence details every aspect of his life in jail his attempts to be free his physical fitness program. Mr. Bronson is an incredibly expressive and prolific writer and there are many many streams of correspondence; writings to and from his fiance lawyers publishers editors other convicts fans and friends. He is obviously intelligent and a very driven man in many ways. Some of this material is not for the weak of heart and some will have you laughing hard. Mr. Bronson also had a number of interesting friends; he is godfather to the son of Ronald Biggs of the Great Train Robbery fame; a pal to the Kray Brothers leaders of an infamous family run crime gang of whom he wrote a book based on their lives and relationship with him are but a few. We noted a Christmas card to Mr. Bronson's fiance with his and perhaps 30 autographs of other well wishers for example. This archive is the definition of 'one of a kind' as a unique unparalleled look into the essence of criminality law enforcement criminal psychology and the British government and it's penal system. It is also a one of a kind portal into the heart soul mind and demons of a long term convict a noted artist prolific writer poet with the added perspective of a romance and long distance relationship of very high intensity. There are many many hundreds if not over a 1000 pages of correspondence filling a 22 x 16 x 7 inch tub right now and will probably ship in one banker's box and will require a secure shipping method like UPS. We noticed about half a dozen pieces of original artwork a small number of large and small format postcard style paper with artwork and then doodles and drawings throughout the correspondence. Softcovers two issues each bound in color pictorial stapled wraps. The covers are very slightly soiled with minor chips to the spine where stapled. There are very minor creases to the edges. 65 & 3 pages including the covers; and 64 & 4 pages including the covers. Both issues are illustrated in color and black & white including profuse depictions of Pablo Picasso and his art work. Very good. <p>The first issue of May 5-11 1973 Volume 2 Number 30 is devoted to the Picasso Museum of Barcelona "El Mejor 'Museo Picasso' del Mundo: BARCELONA". The Barcelona museum has the second largest collection of Picasso paintings in the world only after the Picasso Museum in Paris. It specializes in the early years of Picasso in Spain. This issue publishes articles from the World press on the death of Picasso. Included are articles by Miguel Angel Gozalo Alfonso Barra Eugenio Montes and Andres Travesti. The 11 page article on the Museo Picasso is written by Teresa Toda and is profusely illustrated in color and black & white.<p>The second issue of May 12-18 1973 Volume 2 Number 31 is devoted almost entirely to Picasso and is profusely illustrated in color and black & white. Picasso was a contributor to the Sunday Supplement of "ABC de Madrid". This issue reprints one of his articles where he narrates his life experience and his opinions on the new generation of young people "Picasso Cuenta Cosas de Picasso". There is a lengthy article on Picasso by Salvador de Madariago a 6-page "Galeria Picasso" and an article on Picasso's daughter Paloma and her mother Francoise Gilot. There is a pictorial article "Picasso y sus Contrastes" illustrated in color and black & white. There is also a section on women and Picasso "Las Mujeres y Picasso" containing "Interrogatorio a Picasso" by Jose Maria Peman and an article by Javier Rubio. "Iconografia de Picasso" is a pictorial article illustrated in color and black & white. A concluding article by Jose Camon Aznar is titled "Picasso en su Final".<p>The text is in Spanish.<p>RARE. The Nobel Prize-winning microbiologist describes his major scientific work recalls the colleagues and students of his long career and reflects on his triumphs failings doubts and beliefs. Salvador Edward Luria born Salvatore Luria; August 13 1912 - February 6 1991 was an Italian microbiologist later a naturalized U.S. citizen. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1969 with Max Delbrück and Alfred Hershey for their discoveries on the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of viruses. Salvador Luria also showed that bacterial resistance to viruses phages is genetically inherited. In 1959 he became chair of Microbiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT. At MIT he switched his research focus from phages to cell membranes and bacteriocins. His lab discovered that bacteriocins achieve this impairment by forming holes in the cell membrane allowing ions to flow through and destroy the electrochemical gradient of cells. In 1972 he became chair of The Center for Cancer Research at MIT. In addition to the Nobel Prize Luria received a number of awards. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1959. He was named a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1960. In 1964 he was elected to the American Philosophical Society. In 1969 he was awarded the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University with Max Delbrück co-winner with Luria of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1969. He received the National Medal of Science in 1991. Derived from a Kirkus review: S. E. Luria's autobiography adds another gem to the Sloan Foundation series. The molecular biologist and Nobel laureate writes with a crispness and concision that mirrors his outlook and his work. He is proud of "reductionist" science; he is committed to a life of reason and political action. Early on he confides also he committed himself to acquiring a musical education and later to learning and appreciating "modern" poets. All this is told in chapters that compartmentalize the life: the developing years as a Jew in a modest Turin household in pre-fascist Italy; the scientific achievements; the teaching career; the marriage emotional life political activities. Luria set out to study medicine but a fascination with physics led to Fermi in Rome and then to a stint at the Pasteur Institute and the study of genes as molecules--a fanciful idea in the Thirties. World War II found him in New York and subsequently at Bloomington Indiana. The slot machine and the broken test tube of the title were both scientific turning points. In the first instance Luria made an intuitive leap while watching a slot machine at a college dance. He had been speculating about a problem dividing biologists: did the viruses that infected bacteria "phages" induce some bacteria to become resistant or was resistance the result of a random bacterial mutation If the latter then an experiment could be set up that would show certain cultures of bacteria infected by phage to be "jackpots" with numerous resistant colonies while others would be duds. So it was. The broken test tube was indeed an accident but one that resolved yet another mystifying question: why did some bacteria infected by phage die without phage progeny showing up in the culture dish The bacteria produced enzymes it turned out that attacked the phage DNA: the bacteria were still killed but the phage would not reproduce in that bacteria or in related strains. When Luria's test tube broke he borrowed a colleague's that contained bacteria of an unrelated strain; the enzyme-modified phage grew happily in this strain--thus demonstrating the new phenomena of "restriction" and "modification." Luria's chapters on molecular biology and its shapers are fine additions to the genre; the fascination of the book however is in the man. He presents himself with forthright honesty and integrity--unexpectedly disclosing at the end that he suffered years of depressive episodes prior to drug treatment. A remarkable life abundant in courage and conviction. Harper & Row hardcover
