A very rare pamphlet related to the Dutch West India Company and its settlements in Guinea offering a glimpse of the growing competition among European powers for the slave trade between West Africa and the West Indies. Competition was particularly sharp between the powerful Dutch West India Company and the Danish African Company which had also recently established settlments in Guinea. Against this background emerges the strange story of one Isaac Coymans an Amsterdam merchant who plotted to murder the settlers of a Dutch colony and turn it over to the Danish Crown. He was tried and convicted and this rare pamphlet publishes the sentence of the court: Coymans was imprisoned for six years banished for life from the 7 Dutch Provinces and fined 20000 florins.<br/>It is rare: OCLC locates only one copy in the United States Harvard and four in the Netherlands. 1669WRCAM15822Paris 1669. 7pp. Small quarto. Modern boards leather label. Light soiling around the edges. Very good. A variant issue with a slightly different title of this important edict which allows members of the nobility to trade by sea without foregoing any of their privileges. Previously their activities had been circumscribed by ordinances preventing their entering commerce. Apparently a catalyst for this edict was the formation of the Compagnie des Indes in 1664 which is specifically mentioned in the text. A note on the last page states that this copy was collated against the King's Ministry copy. OCLC locates only one copy at the University of Oxford. Rare.
