The elephants have painted faces & trunks and are dressed in rich saddle cloths laden with priceless embroidery.<br /> <br /> Images include a close up view of the head of one elephant with jewels on his tusks and the mahout in white turban on his back; a single elephant full length flanked by attendants exiting the court yard of a stately residence; and two decorated elephants standing side by side on a road presumably at the head of a procession with mahouts on their back and flanked by attendants.<br /> <br /> Each image captioned "India" in period ink at the lower left outside the border of the print. <br /> <br /> The photographs are printed on beautiful thick photographic paper. With 4pp of illustrated industrial advertisements at end. Greatly expanded and updated version of the first edition 'Irrigation Works in India and Egypt' of 1893. All unsold copies were destroyed by fire at the publishers and it was consequently unavailable by December 1903. The original book also included descriptions of the Irrigation Works of Egypt; these are almost entirely omitted here since Works in India had increased substantially and required greater coverage. 196216434Indian Studies Past & Present Calcutta 1962. 4to. with diagrams in the text; original boards covers lightly age-marked else a good clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper the latter lightly frayed and creased at edges. Buhler's classic study was first published in the German language in 1898; the first English translation prepared by Fleet appeared in 1904 as an appendix in 'Indian Antiquary'. There the situation rested for over fifty years until the work was reissued in 'Indian Studies' in 1959 when for the first time the separately printed portfolio of plates and transliteration tables appeared with English captions. This edition was rapidly exhausted and thus the present reissue was produced. This reissue provides a verbatim reproduction of the 1959 edition together with Max-Muller's Obituary Note on Buhler originally published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1898 and Fleet's Introductory Notes to the text as published in 1904 Sadly the rare separate portfolio is not present with this copy which is quite sufficiently elusive in its own right. 1912250141912. Very good condition. Two large silver tone photographs of India's first steel plant. Founded in 1907 by Jamsetji Tata and producing steel by 1912 the company became the largest steel plant in the British Empire. It was set up in only 3 years with construction plans drawn up by American and Belgian engineers. The plant rapidly produced steel critical for use in W.W.I: 1500 miles of rail and 300000 tons of steel material for military campaigns in Mesopotamia Egypt Salonica and East Africa.<br /> <br /> Both images are company pictures; the first depicts most of the work force standing on risers in front of the plant's massive chimneys with Indian workers standing and 5 British directors in white pith helmets seated in the foreground. A small bill board erected in the group reads "Blooming & Railings Bar Mill.<br /> <br /> The second is a larger company image showing more personnel with the British managers standing in the center foreground and a few workers standing rather precariously on a hoist overlooking the crowd in the background.<br /> <br /> 11 1/2 x 9"; 11 1/4 x 9 1/4 unknown
