Royal decree by Louis XIV allowing the rights to a tenth of the value of all prizes captured usually allowed to the Admiral of France to the Compagnie des Indes until the expiration of their current license after which the "dixième" will revert again to the Admiralty. Some of these prizes were seized in American waters. Wroth cites only one copy that in the John Crerar Library; OCLC locates only one more at the University of Minnesota. A friend of Voltaire and member of the Académie Française Brienne wielded significant power as head of the Finance Ministry which earned him many enemies. The articles of the decree examine the assets of the company in the years after the French and Indian War allocate funds and set forth a payment schedule with a view towards transferring the company's property to state control. A French royal decree releasing the Compagnie from some of its debts an important step in its reorganization. In 1721 the Compagnie had declared bankruptcy and was reorganized after the Mississippi Bubble burst. "This decree discharges the Compagnie des Indes of a large number of financial burdens which had been weighing on it for a number of years" - Maggs. Wroth locates only one copy at NYPL; OCLC identifies three more copies. "The Compagnie des Indes flourished from 1726 to 1746 paying handsome dividends and bringing wealth to the ports of Bordeaux Nantes Marseille and in particular its home port of Lorient L'Orient although it lost its rights in the western hemisphere. It established trading offices in many parts of India also Canton Yemen Persia Basra and North Africa. The main sources of its wealth were porcelain wallpapers lacquer and tea from China cotton and silk cloth from China and India coffee from Mocha Yemen pepper from Mahé South India gold ivory and slaves from West Africa" - Shakespeare. Memorial of Joseph François Dupleix 1697- 1763 Governor General of India detailing the ongoing feud between him and Bertrand François Mahé de La Bourdonnais and reporting on Dupleix's activities in India. The memorial reprints correspondence between the two men during 1746. The feud was escalated in September of that year when the French captured British-held Madras. La Bourdonnais offered generous and lenient terms to the commander of the island only to have Dupleix disregard them once he was left in command. This is one of two versions authored by him. Lally head of the French expedition to India reached Pondichery in 1758. Though capable he was extremely unpopular and fell into a series of events which proved fatal to his career and his person. He was unsuccessful in the Siege of Madras and beaten at the Battle of Wandiwash and eventually capitulated from the siege of Pondichery. Taken prisoner by the British he returned to France on parole and was imprisoned for two years before being put on trial and executed. This is his last defence published shortly thereafter or perhaps immediately preceding a publisher's note is dated April 14 and Lally was executed May 6. unknown books
