Calcutta: Government of India Central Publication Branch 1929. First edition. Scarce. A landmark legal intervention in the regulation of child marriage in British India this pamphlet prints the full text of the Child Marriage Restraint Act of 1929-commonly known as the Sarda Act-passed by the Indian Legislature and receiving the assent of the Governor General on October 1 1929. The Act criminalized the solemnization of marriages involving boys under 18 and girls under 14 later amended to 18 and 15 respectively and imposed penalties on adult men who contracted child marriages as well as on parents priests or other facilitators. Its provisions extended across all of British India including British Baluchistan and the Santhal Parganas and came into force on April 1 1930.<br /> <br /> The law was introduced at the urging of Indian social reformers particularly Har Bilas Sarda whose campaign aligned with women's rights advocates challenging patriarchal customs under colonial rule. The legislation explicitly defined a "minor" as anyone under 18 and imposed fines and jail terms for men over 21 who married girls below the legal threshold as well as for those who conducted or arranged such ceremonies. A radical attempt to legislate personal status and protect young girls from forced early marriage the Act is recognized as a foundational moment in Indian feminist legal history and a precedent for later reforms. This official government printing priced at "1 anna or 1½d" reflects the colonial administration's effort to disseminate the law widely across the provinces. Minor edge creasing. The visit was crucial in restoring good relations with India following Nixon's tilt toward Pakistan in 1971. Kamath was Washington correspondent for the Times of India from 1969 to 1978. Second edition of this informative memoir drawn from personal interviews experiences and notebooks of big game hunter and late Inspector General of Police Bombay Digby Davies as well as the author’s own sporting experiences. At the time he had been specifically requested to eliminate all personal names and references in the incidents with Davies whom Gouldsbury would specifically mention in the follow-up “Tiger Slayer by Order†1915. Gouldsbury writes of numerous encounters with tigers in his own adventures hunting from elephant back and machans as well as leopards and maruading elephants with additional references to bison ibex and others. Davies relates his time serving during the Sepoy Mutiny work as a sporting inspector and specifically hunting down tigers elephants and others endangering villagers and livestock. One chapter specifically mentions hunting a 419 lb. tiger stretching over 10 feet 7 inches from nose to end of tail and standing 3 1/2 feet which had terrorized villagers killing cattle across Bengal. Mukerjee a leading thinker and social scientist of modern India was Professor of Economics and Sociology and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lucknow. Mukerjee played an important and constructive role in the Indian independence movement. He was a highly original philosopher of history and a discerning interpreter of culture and civilization and a 1962 recipient of the third highest Indian civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan. Mukerjee was the son of a barrister in Baharampur West Bengal a city located some 185 km north of Kolkata. He grew up in a household with a scholarly focus and a library devoted to history literature the law and Sanskrit texts. After attending Krishnanagar College he gained an academic scholarship to Presidency College under the University of Calcutta. He earned his honours degrees in English and History. Mukerjee opened the discourse of the Ashtavakra Gita into English with his posthumous work published in 1971. Mukherjees theory of society sought to explain the values of civilization. In sense Radhakamal was a pioneer of transdisciplinary approach in science. Radhakamal Mukerjee emphasized interdisciplinary disciplinary approach towards the understanding of life. Mukerjee sought to break the barriers between physical sciences and sciences relating to persons aspects. He was a pioneer of Sociology in the 1900s.
