No. 1; Febrero 15 1931 / Ano I. No. 2; Febrero 22 1931 / Ano I. No. 3; Marzo 1 1931 / Ano I. No. 4; Marzo 8 1931 / Ano I. No. 5; Marzo 15 1931. The last issue No. 5. does not have the original front cover otherwise all original illustrated wraps are present. All a bit browned as expected and brittle with the occasional small marginal tear but perfectly good reading copies complete and nicely preserving the text illustrations sheet music and ads. Items include: One forty page brochure in decorated and printed card stock wrappers "CUBA The Pearl of the Antilles" with 16 itineraries and copious pictorial advertisements; two contemporary color picture postcards unused; small brochure folded to make four pages offering visits to "Algibe" Farm the "most typical Cuban Farm in the vicinity of Havana" where you are invited to see how crops are grown attend "Thrilling Cock-Fights at all hours" and "Royal Palm Climbing Exhibitions." Finally a fan-folded invitation to "Buy where Cubans buy" at La Isla de Cuba with an accompanying map 21 x 14 in. dated 1928 of the entire downtown Havana shopping district folded into twelve 7 x 3.75 in. panels with breaks at folds see photo. Narrow octavo 22.75cm; original pictorial card wrappers; 67-4293pp; illus.; text is entirely in Spanish. Inscribed by Guillen on the title page to Puerto Rican editor translator and literary critic Roberto Márquez: "Para Roberto Márquez / con el fraternal cariño de Nicolas / La Habana Feb. 74." Signed directly beneath by an unknown figure and below that by Afro-Cuban poet and journalist Marcelino Arozarena 1912-1996. The opposing page is inscribed for Márquez in verse with a small drawing by an undetermined poet signed "David Feb.74." The verso of the half-title page is warmly inscribed by Cuban poet and critic Nancy Morejón who has written the foreword to this volume: "Para mi queridísimo Roberto Marquez / la admiracion y el cariño immenso de Nancy / La Habana / 19 de feb. de 1974." Directly beneath this is another warm year of publication inscription by an underemined individual. This volume has been extensively marked-up by Márquez whose contribution "Introducción a Guillén" appears on pp.127-138. Some wear to extremities a few nicks and tears to spine ends with some creases to wrappers; Very Good. <br /> <br /> A key volume of critical texts on Guillén 1902-1989 the national poet of Cuba by many of his contemporaries like Mirta Aguirre Angel Augier Roberto Fernández Retamar Nancy Morejón Alejo Carpentier Pablo Neruda Ciro Alegría and others. This copy bears a number of contemporary inscriptions to Márquez a Guillén scholar who has written extensively on his work and has translated several of the poet's works faithfully from Spanish into English. 88452. Four days of celebrations were planned for May 19 20 21 and 22. Events including the singing of the National Anthem orchestral concerts fireworks dancing and other diversions. Cuba Havana landmarks and urban development real photo post card archive ca. 1920s-1940s. 11 color and sepia real photo postcards of iconic civic and cultural architecture in Havana Cuba. Each measure 4" x 6". Many with captions identifying the locations in the negative or en verso with some printed in English and others in Spanish signaling their intended audience of both locals and foreign tourists. A compelling photo archive documenting early 20th-century Havana's architectural and political aspirations this collection showcases prominent landmarks that symbolized Cuba's nationalist identity international cosmopolitanism and American-influenced modernization in the decades between independence from Spain and the Cuban Revolution. The archive includes silver gelatin and printed color views of the National Theatre Cuba's Capitol Building Central Railway Station Gran Casino Nacional National University and the grand gateway of Havana's Colón Cemetery. Other views depict Paseo de Martí one of Havana's most iconic boulevards lined with vintage American cars and flanked by ornate colonial facades and new Art Deco-style hotels evidence of the influx of U.S. capital and tourism during the Batista era. Havana in this period was rapidly transforming into a showcase city of the Caribbean its urban core reflecting both Spanish colonial heritage and American urban planning models. The presence of monumental buildings like El Capitolio constructed between 1926 and 1929 and modeled after the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. points to Cuba's alignment with American political aesthetics and aspirations toward modern statehood. Similarly the University and Gran Casino Nacional represent both the intellectual elite and leisure-class investment that typified pre-revolutionary Cuban society. The mixture of European and U.S. architectural influences ranging from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco speaks to the layered colonial legacy and new economic dependency forged during the Platt Amendment era. 1906List3021La Habana Province Republic of Cuba 1906. Twenty-two photographs measuring 7 ¼ x 9 ½ inches mounted on heavy cardstock measuring 10 x 12 inches. Photos numbered and dated on negative. In album embossed with “Havana Central Railroad Co./ Progress Photographs/ GUANAJAYâ€. Photos with fine contrast and some wear; mounts with minor damage slightly warped with some detached from binding. Overall excellent. Havana Central Railroad Company was an American company formed in April 1905. It opened two electric tram lines—Havana to Guanajay in 1906 and Havana to Güines in 1907—before it was bought by the English company United Railways following the Panic of 1907. Offered here is a photo album showing the construction of the Guanajay line. The photographs show laborers assisted by horse-drawn carts digging culverts laying tracks and erecting bridges and buildings.<br /> <br /> This project came on the heels of the successful efforts of the Cuba Company another railroad company to make the emerging Cuban Republic amenable to American business.They did so first by using ‘revocable permits’ which could ostensibly be revoked by the new government when it was formed to circumvent the Foraker Amendment prohibiting concessions to American companies by the US’s military government; and second by using their close relationships to several members of the Cuban Constitutional Convention to include a law allowing irrevocable permits.1 These along with the Platt Amendment and Governor Leonard Wood’s General Railway Law led to what would amount to domination by US interests in Cuba particularly but not exclusively in the railroad industry.2<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of the early Republic of Cuba especially the history of US businesses in the country.<br /> <br /> 1 Juan C. A seemingly unrecorded silk broadside issued by the Cuba-American Jockey Club Company advertising the lineup of horses and the schedule for a series of five races during Dia de las Damas "Ladies Day" at the Oriental Park racetrack in Marianao Havana in 1916. In addition the top of the broadside is printed with small oval- and diamond-shaped portraits picturing the nine officers of the club who are identified by name and their position within the club. Below these portraits is a listing of fourteen officers of the club. The Oriental Park Racetrack "Parque Oriental" opened in 1915 for winter racing which began in November and lasted into March each year. The racetrack was the only thoroughbred track in Cuba until Fidel Castro practically shut it down after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. The present broadside is a visual reminder of the influx of American business interests in Cuba in the early 20th century. No copies reported in OCLC. unknown

195872030Havana: Santos Foto ca. 1958. Original Cuban Revolution era photograph showing a seated group of five people. 9 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches. In the center is a soldier very much trying to look like Che Guevara with a full beard and mustache in army cloths and hat and holding a rifle. Seated on either side of him are two couples all in street clothes and each of the men is holding a rifle. The guns appear to be Thompson M1 A1s which would place this photograph at the beginning of the Revolution before Soviet weapons were commonplace. The photographer Santos Foto Habana is identified in the plate and stamped on the rear. Ironically this picture is laid into a Empire Room Waldorf Astoria printed folder. It should be noted that Che Guevara once worked as a dishwasher at the Waldorf so this pairing is probably intentional. Santos Foto hardcover

About very good. 138 original prints each 8 x 10 inches; mostly large format images with twelve contact sheet containing multiple smaller images and including several duplicates. Light wear at edges; slight curling. Occasional patches of scuffing or soiling. Scattered manuscript annotations and ink stamps on blank versos of photographs. An interesting aggregation of approximately 150 unique professional images that depict the travels and activities of the Latin American Fiesta Association of Tampa Florida. The cultural heritage group was founded in 1940 and flourished from the late 1940s to the 1980s and organized or participated in local social events had an annual ball and traveled widely across Latin America. The photographs here date from 1949 to the early 1960s and document the travels of association members to Spain Mexico and Cuba. They attended numerous events entertainments dinners and other social gatherings as well as made visits to attractions and local cultural clubs. In Spain and Cuba their trips seem to have been limited to Madrid and Havana respectively and there are some interesting series of travel images in Cuba from just prior to the Revolution.<br /> <br /> The group seems to have made multiple trips to Mexico and traveled somewhat more widely. Scattered images show the activities of the association in Florida as well and many of the prints have contemporary manuscript captions and ink stamps of local photographers and photography studios on the versos. In all a wide-ranging and quite engaging group of large photographs that document this midcentury Latin American social club in Florida. unknown
