1956021414No Place: No publisher 1956. Unbound. Good. No publisher or place. All 1956. Approximately 30-40 pieces. Most are duplicate typed sheets as well as some blank fundraising forms and envelopes and a lengthy guest list including number of tickets needed. These papers relate to a campaign fundraising dinner Adlai Stevenson and his campaign held on April 25th 1956 at the Waldorf. This includes duplicates of letters of invitations addressed to a variety of people; confidential campaign memos; blank fundraising forms; and a lengthy guest list that includes Eleanor Roosevelt among others. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner their ties to those who did are strong. GOOD condition. All housed in a manila folder. Some are stapled many bear creases and are toned with some pencil or pen notes scattered throughout. No publisher unknown
1904019115Attleboro MA: G.M. Robbins Co 1904. Unbound. Very Good. Measures approximately 2 5/8 by 1 3/8 inches at its tallest and widest. Clasping pin style back. Golden color metal. A pinback presumably issued for a Shriner outing held in Atlantic City in 1904 featuring a sphinx sword and crescent moon attached to a medallion with a pyramid at its center. The Shriners originated within the Freemasons and are often associated with charities. VERY GOOD condition. Minor tarnishing to the metal on the front a bit heavier to the sword. G.M. 1932021730Calvert TX: Calvert Colored High School Publisher 1932. Wraps. Good. Single sheet folded into four pages 8 ½ by 5 ½ inches. Cover mentions day and location of the commencement May 23rd at the WW.O.W. Temple. Interior lists the names of the senior class students as well as class officers Board of Education members and faculty members. The Calvert Colored High School was built in 1929 with aid from the Rosenwald School Fund. It was originally named Calvert County Training School. This school was a step toward providing real education to Black students in the area as most of the students at that time attended "plantation" schools until they were old enough to work in the fields. The school offered vocational training although apparently focusing on skills that would not conflict with occupations commonly held by white people Texas State Historical Landmark text. The school changed its name to the W.D. Spigner High School in 1961 named after its long time headmaster. GOOD condition. Appears to have been removed from a scrapbook or photobook as there are large areas of black paper adhered to the blank rear page. Horizontal fold crease present. Minor toning wrinkling and creasing. Text repeats twice indicating this was meant to be cut into two small handbills. The flier advertises a discussion held by Harriet Muhammad a columnist for Muhammad Speaks the newspaper for the Nation of Islam. Held at the Salem Baptist Church in Los Angeles on Sunday July 12th the discussion covered topics including: "the Muslim Movement the power structure and the Civil Rights Movement;" "Messenger Elijah Muhammad;" "Separation vs. Integration;" and "Proposals of the Nation of Islam." Thin yellow paper presumably a copy of the original produced at the same time as the original as the previous owner seemingly kept copies of all correspondence. From an executive of a very large international insurance firm name of owner and firm withheld for privacy. The previous owner saved these items for an apparent planned scrapbook mounting most on paper with either glue or staples. The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner's work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities including financing the Flying Tigers in China as well as work for the OSS using knowledge gained from insurance work. NB: we are starting the process of cataloguing four boxes of material from this individual both personal and business correspondence. More information on the collection available on request. Previous owner is the same as the above item. This letter dated January 24 1961 details their arrival back in New York to who is presumed to be their spouse. After a few paragraphs about family matters the letter describes the owner's efforts to an inauguration event at the Statler Hotel/National Armory that was made extremely difficult by a bad snowstorm. Mentioned are performers such as Frank Sinatra Harry Belafonte Nat King Cole and others. The author then mentions attending one of five inaugural balls stating it was much like the Eisenhower Inaugural Ball but more crowded. Apparently Jackie Kennedy was too tired at this point to attend but JFK was "full of fire." The letter goes on with details about guests/friends and other personal matters. GOOD condition. 1978020846Trenton NJ: Land-Lord's presumed Publisher 1978. Unbound. Good. Single sheet 8 ½ by 12 1/8 inches. Thin paper stock. Printed on a single side only. A flyer for a disco and awards event held by the Land-Lord's Chapter 2 Motorcycle Club in Trenton New Jersey on December 9th 1978. With an upper center illustration of what is presumed to be the club's emblem. The event featured a disco raffles for money and ½ gallons of alcohol awards for most represented club farthest distance club best dressed hog best dressed chopper etc. Unfortunately not much could be found out about this club except that they enjoyed disco and a funky good time. GOOD condition. Many horizontal and vertical fold creases present with other wrinkling and creasing. Moderate soiling and some staining especially to the reverse. Light general fading. Among the events dealt with in this volume are the declaration of war against the United States by the Emperor of Morocco and the naval demonstration before Tangier Morocco in conjunction with diplomatic pressure in the hope of averting hostitilies. Other events also covered are the blockading of Tripoli; the grounding of the U.S. frigate Philadelphia and her subsequent capture by the Tripolitans; the captivity of Captain Bainbridge and the crew of the Philadelphia; the capture of the U.S. Schnooner Enterprize of the Tripolitan ketch Mastico which was taken into service of the United States and renamed Intrepid; after fianlly the epic boarding and burning of the Philadelphia by the then Lt. Stephen Decauter. Included in this volume are a number of diplomatic and other state papers necessary to present an adequate political and economic background to naval operations." A program for the 1906-1907 season of shows at the New York Hippodrome featuring a "Society Circus" with the whole show focusing on "gypsy" characters. Also present is several pages of music composed by composer Manuel Klein who wrote music for shows at the Hippodrome and other locales in New York and elsewhere. A photo of marksman Colonel Gaston Bordeverry aiming a gun at the top of a young woman's head also included. GOOD condition. Wrinkling and creasing to the covers with some scratches and scuffs resulting in a few tears and punctures. A few tears along the extremities. 1916020763Gainesville FL: Pepper Publishing and Printing Co 1916. Unbound. Good. Single sheet 18 by 10 inches folded to 3 3/8 by 6 inches with printing on what is essentially six panels. Several black and white photos present including several of the steamboat Hiawatha. A booklet promoting steamboat trips on the Ocklawaha River in Florida a narrow twisting river that required specially designed steamboats for its navigation. Presumably started by Hubbard L. Hart the Ocklawaha Steamboat Company was probably the last iteration of the original company that was founded in 1865. Hart ran steamboats for the Confederacy during the Civil War helping to avoid Union blockades. The steamboats disappeared by the 1920s replaced by motor powered boats. GOOD condition. 1956021525No Place: No publisher 1956. Unbound. Good. Various places and dates. Dates range from April 25 1956 to June 27 1956. 14 leaves printed on single sides only. It appears most are copies of originals but a few may be original as well. All these letters stem from a proposal letter written by Ambassador Whiting Willauer to his friend and insurance executive from whose estate these came. Willauer mentions his troubles with some Chinese refugees he sponsored which made him ponder the possibility for some sort of insurance for sponsors of refugees to cover financial losses in case the refugees are not able to fulfill their obligations stipulated in the Refugee Act of 1953. The letters are between other US insurance executives pondering options and feasibility with the eventual conclusion that the proposal was not practical. The act itself was meant to accommodate 200000 refugees affected by communism. The earliest letter is from US Ambassador Whiting Willauer on "The Foreign Service of the United States of America" letterhead and apparently written from Honduras where Willauer was serving at the time. Notably Willauer along with Claire Chennault established the Civilian Air Transport Company in China in 1946 selling it to the CIA in 1950 although not resigning from the company until 1954. At this time he became ambassador to Honduras and worked directly with the CIA in Guatemala in support of their operation to overthrow its government led by Jacobo Arbenz Guzman see Wikipedia for previous information-or misinformation. Willauer's letter does bear a signature but we have not authenticated it in any way. 1914022505No Place: No publisher 1914. Wraps. Poor. Disbound leaves roughly 8 by 7 inches with a cardstock front cover bearing a label with the student's name and year Marion Conaway 1914. 14 leaves with 12 of the 14 containing a piece of fabric that displays an example of various stitches mostly along hems or seams. The fabric is mounted by metal fasteners. Laid in is a certificate issued in 1918 from the Victory Girls and the United War Work Campaign certifying that Ms. Conaway paid a dollar toward the United War Work Campaign and was deemed an official Victory Girl. This campaign was created as a way for people in the US to support troops during World War I. Presumably the booklet was done for school demonstrating the variety of sewing and stitching techniques that was being taught. POOR condition. Booklet falling apart with all leaves detached and cover detached. Lacking a rear cover. The paper mountings are toned and brittle with some chipping and loss along the edges. The fabrics are clean although some are folded due to mishandling. No publisher unknown

1919019692St. Joseph MO: Progressive Numbers presumed Publisher 1919. Unbound. Good. Single sheet folded into 4 pages making a small booklet. Printed on card stock. A program for an event held by what appears to have been an African American fraternal or social organization. The event was held May 15th 1919. The event started at 8:45 pm with food served promptly at 9:30. The invocation was led by Reverend E.M. Cohron and it appears the poem "At the Closed Gates of Justice" by James D. Corrothers was read cited by its first line "To be a Negro on a Day Like This." Another address "Where Ethiopia Should Stretch Forth Her Hands" was also given. Honorary members of Progressive Numbers are listed including Rev. J.A. Gregg Richard B. Harrison and Clarence Cameron White. List of last names and first initials of 12 members also present. While we could find nothing identifying this organization its motto is "Onward Upward" and its colors are lavender and cream. GOOD condition. Moderate toning and minor soiling. 1918021403No Place: No publisher 1918. Cloth. Good. World War I Hospital/Medical Worker Diary. 1918 France. In a Daily Reminder Calendar for 1918. Red cloth. 365 pp. one for each day of the year. No name/author given. Some entries rather faded and most written in pencil. Handwriting is sometimes illegible. We speculate the author may have been an officer in the AEF as many of their entries refer to daily inspections and they reference an officer training drill in one entry. Many entries also refer to lieutenants majors and other officers although very rarely giving names instead using a single initial. It appears they were part of the AEF's hospital unit with mention of being at a frontline ambulance medical facility run by French forces and called Ambulance de Bois Roger see Feb. 12. First entry for January 1st indicates the author was in Langres France with the AEF American Expeditionary Force and mentions that school is out and he took a walk. They describe waiting for orders eventually being moved to Liffol-le-grand and Camp Hospital 18 for the month of January. By Early February entries are from Field Hospital 101. A hand drawn map/plan of Ambulance de Bois Roger appears on February 12. They describe setting up a triage with plan. On February 17 "considerable artillery to the east" is mentioned and the author as well as their going to an abandoned trench on the ridge. German biplanes are referred to using the French term avion boche. Boche was a derogatory term for Germans and the word appears off and on in entries going forward including March 8th where it states "Some boche in the air." They also mention that two were killed. By April the author is back at Camp Hospital 18 another map/plan of the facility appears and Field Hospital 101. Entries pretty much cease by April 23 with a few scattered entries short a few long" through the rest of the book. In general the diarist discusses basic day to day operations at the various medical facilities as well as planning interactions with others basic orders etc. GOOD condition. Residue/staining on the front cover. General fading. Minor soiling and edgewear. Some bumping. No publisher unknown

Includes several menus invitations to cocktails of liner stationary addressed to the passenger a passenger list a list of shore excursions a letter of welcome from the Swedish-American Line director and a souvenir booklet of "reminiscences" from the cruise. Illustrated wraps 8vo. Varying paginations with illustrations. Very good. Bending and some edgewear to items predominately clean and unmarked. A work promoting the use of California lemons as a health and beauty product for use on the hair skin hands manicuring teeth and gums. Seemingly aimed at a female audience with the illustrations depicting what could be considered Flapper Girls. Suggestions for application and use of lemons included. What appears to be either an artist's or photographer's monogram visible on the front cover looking like an M with a triangle. GOOD condition. Tall thick 8vo in the publisher's original pale blue cloth the upper cover and spine both decorated with ships craps clouds and sunbursts in brown ivory and gilt and with gilt lettering t.e.g. ix 272 4 ads pp. A handsome copy the plates all fine and bright some very occasional and light foxing within the text the lovely decorated binding is solid and firm with very little sign of wear but with a bit of mellowing to the spine front endpaper with cosmetic only spitting at the still-strong hinge. FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF THE MORE ELUSIVE TITLES IN BLACK'S TRAVEL SERIES A LOVELY BOOK IN FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. The blue seas and sun-drenched islands of the West Indies served as wonderful inspiration for both pen and paintbrush in this hard to find gem. Jamaica receives the lion's share of attention but other subjects include Barbadoes St. Lucia Dominica St. Thomas and Martinique.
