189223670New Brunswick New Jersey: David Clark 355 George St. 1892. Cabinet card portrait by 19th century New Jersey photographer David Clark 1825 - 1902. " In 1852 Clark took over Vail's gallery on Peace Street where he remained until relocating probably in 1863 to King Block Commerce Square. There he continued until 1891 at which time he moved to George Street. In 1851 Clark exhibited a few very fine daguerreotypes including a highly praised portrait of a lady at the first World's Fair at the Crystal Palace in London. At the New Jersey State Fair in 1857 he was awarded the prize for the best daguerreotypes in the state. Clark did a large portrait business but he also did other kinds of work including now rare stereographic views of New Brunswick. His career of fifty years spanned important developments in photographic technology so his work is found in a variety of formats and techniques; the most commonly seen today are cartes-de-visite. Clark died in 1902; soon thereafter Isaac S. Van Derveer 1880-1975 was operating at Clark's last location and may have acquired his negatives. A collection of Van Derveer negatives including a few that may be Clark's are now at Special Collections Rutgers University New Brunswick " ref. 2010 Saretzky Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers; photo is of a well-dressed & groomed young gentleman sitter not named; approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" overall size; front of mount card with the D. Heavily chipped at lower edge substantial section of loss to upper edge; several closed tears to edges one intruding slightly on but not affecting image. Image clean. Matted. Handsome and scarce view of Hackensack near the turn of the century surrounded by numerous detailed vignettes of residences and businesses in the city. The city was experiencing substantial growth at this period with the population increasing by almost 3500 people in the 1890s. Printed in black and tinted in green the view is taken from the east side of the Hackensack River with the eastern frontage road and the riverbank in the foreground and Hackensack Heights rising in the far distance. The central view of the city is surrounded by thirty-five vignettes of businesses and residences such as the Office of the Bergen County Democrat hotels the tobacconist dry goods store funeral director the local apothecary five different churches the Hackensack hospital and several grand private residences. 183823980No place but Burlington Iowa 1838. Pen ink and watercolour map of Cumberland County with the properties of D. Parvin and D. Harris and numerous towns located the demarcation line between marsh and solid ground marked and the routes and names of all the main rivers and creeks shown some roads marked in pencil and the route between Salem Salem Co. and the tip of Cape May marked with a purple dotted line. An attractive map of Cumberland County in southern New Jersey.<br/> <br/>The Parvin property is identified as being on the southern bank of the Cohansey River in Fairfield Township. The Harris property is in adjoining Downe Township. These are the only two individual properties identified on the map suggesting that the map was either compiled for or by a member of the Parvin or Harris family. This map was loosely inserted in an 1838 edition of Bradford's Illustrated Atlas inscribed on the title "Theodore Sutton Parvin Burlington Iowa August 15/ 1838" and an examination of the map of New Jersey in the atlas shows that the Cumberland County area was squared up for enlargement. All of which gives a source and probable author of the map. Parvin has added some names and geographical features in addition to those shown on the Bradford engraved map. Theodore Sutton Parvin was born in Cedarville Cumberland County N. J. on January 15 1817; and died June 28 1901. He graduated at Woodward College Cincinnati in 1836; he studied law; was private secretary of Robert Lucas the first governor of the Iowa Territory and was the first librarian of that territory. Later he was librarian and professor in the Iowa State University; was a founder of the Iowa State Historical Society in 1857 and for the years 1863-65 was its corresponding secretary and editor. He was the founder in 1844 of the Iowa Masonic Library and through his exertions this library has its present building at Cedar Rapids. This indenture documents a sale made by Thunnis Ryerson to Charley Stuard of Bergen County New Jersey of "Eleven acres and eighty hundredth of an Acre" of land located in "the Township of Pompton in the County of Bergen" for the sum of "Forty eight dollars." This document also records the complete land survey and a reference to its record number with the Surveyor General's Office in Perth Amboy. The document is signed and sealed by Thunnis Ryerson and witnessed by Abram C. Lines and Polly Ryerson. Docketed and certified on the verso with a manuscript note by Martin Ryerson judge in Bergen County. The Ryersons were a prominent New Jersey family with roots stretching back to Dutch immigrants who settled on Long Island in 1646. Martin J. Ryerson 1751-1839 was active in several endeavors including owning the Pompton Ironworks on the Ramapo River. unknown books

The Committee discusses the function of a Constitution which is "the source of all political power the fountain of all government" setting "fundamental" rules of conduct "bounds" to governmental action and guarantees to "publick liberty" by separation of governmental powers. Though power resides in the people the Committee rejects universal suffrage-- which would include "women children negroes mulattoes paupers slaves convicts"-- as "visionary impossible absurd."
