19938744Princeton University Press. 1993. Hardcover. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Minor shelfwear to DJ else Fine.; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 324 pages; From household gossip to public beatings this social history explores the many channels through which Athenians maintained public order. Virginia Hunter draws mostly on Attic court proceedings which allowed for a wide range of evidence including common rumors about a defendant's character and testimony obtained under torture of slaves against their masters. She describes Athenian "policing" as a form of social control that took place across a range of private and public levels. Not only does policing appear to have been a collective enterprise but its methods were embedded in a variety of social institutions resulting in the blurring of the line between state and society. Hunter's inquiry into topics such as household authority disputes among kin the presence of slaves in the house gossip in the home and neighborhood and forms of public punishment reveals a continuum extending from self-regulation among kin to punitive actions enforced by the state. Recognizing the bias of legal documents toward the wealthy Hunter concentrates on exposing the voices of the less powerful and less privileged members of society including women and slaves. In so doing she is among the first to address systematically such important issues as the authority of women self-help and corporal punishment. . 0691032688 . Princeton University Press hardcover

Per Wikipedia John Clarke Stobart 1878 - 1933 Commonly Known As J. C. Stobart Was A Classical Scholar A University Of Cambridge Lecturer An Hm Inspector Of Schools And The Bbc's First Director Of Education. After The War He Helped Organize The 1924 British Empire Exhibition At Wembley And In 1925 Joined The Bbc As Its First Director Of Education. He Was Responsible For Two Long-Lasting Programs Children's Hour And The Epilogue And According To One Source Suggested The Bbc's Motto 'Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation'. He Also Proposed Creating A New Cultural Network To Be Named The Minerva Programme After The Roman Goddess Of Wisdom But This Idea Was Turned Down And Was Not Realised Until The Creation Of 'The Third Programme' At The End Of The Second World War. Stobart Became Well-Known All Over The World For His Regular New Year's Eve Broadcast 'The Grand Good-Night'. He Disagrees With Edward Gibbon's Pessimistic View Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire Pointing Out That 'The Mere Notion Of Empire Continuing To Decline And Fall For Five Centuries Is Ridiculous' And Remarking That 'This Is One Of The Cases Which Prove That History Is Made Not So Much By Heroes Or Natural Forces As By Historians' Since 'If All The Roman Historians Had Perished And Only The Inscriptions Remained We Should Have A Very Different Picture Of The Roman Empire A Picture Much Brighter And I Think Much More Faithful To Truth.' He Admires The Romans For Their Law Discipline Engineering And Especially Their Sanitation But It Is Clear That He Prefers The Greeks For Their Art Philosophy Mathematics And Literature.

Sidgwick & Jackson hardcover

199417602Routledge / Classical Press of Wales. 1994. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Inscribed in pen to Mark Golden by Stephen Hodkinson on ffep. Light shelfwear.; 408 pages; The past 20 years have witnessed a revival of interest in the study of Sparta. The early 20th-century images of Spartans as hearty good fellows or scarlet-cloaked automata have been superceded by more complex scholarly interpretations of this obscure civilization. The mystery surrounding Sparta has been instrumental in shaping scholarship on the subject. Historians have taken as much interest in the myths and disinformation attached to Sparta as they have in the truth about their city-state. The studies in this volume provide insights into the traditional question of what actually happened at Sparta. Yet the implications of this work go far beyond Laconia to focus on some of the most studied of Greek writers showing how Athenians defined the achievement or the failure of their own city.; Signed by One Author . 0415104130 .
