First edition of this uncommon original 19th-Century plat map atlas for Bartholomew County Indiana during the Gilded Age. J.H. Beers specialized in County Plat Map atlases and histories from 1878-1900 and also focused on producing municipal history and biographical history titles primarily in and around the Midwest. Their well-executed lithograph birds-eye views of businesses towns family farms and more were quite popular were generally pre-sold through subscription and prosperous towns businesses and farms who paid extra were able to secure a biographical section or view within the volumes. Bartholomew County located about 40 miles south of Indianapolis was originally established in 1821 and named for Lt. Col. Joseph Bartholomew a militia officer wounded at the battle of Tippecanoe. The County featured such companies as the Reeves Pulley Co. Ceraline Manufacturing Orinoco Furniture and others in the 19th Century and as of this publication the population was about 30000 inhabitants and today the County features approximately 82000 inhabitants. First edition thus stated “New Edition†which in actuality was an updated and revised edition with new engraved plates executed by W.G. Evans of New York fl. 1830-1845 who also engraved the famed Map of Lewis & Clark’s Track Across the Western Portion of North America in 1842 revised by Archibald M’Vickar. Burritt 1794-1838 an American astronomer and mathematician created his textbook and the later atlas as a low-cost alternative to celestial globes which were often too expensive for many schools in Jacksonian America. The atlas could be purchased for $ 1.25 at the time and the Geography of the Heavens textbooks and Atlases would prove immensely popular in classrooms up until 1876. Adapting most of his constellation figures from Alexander Jamieson’s A Celestial Atlas 1822 Burritt included a plan of the Solar System Celestial maps of the skies in January-March October-December April-June July-September South Pole North Pole and Planisphere of the Whole Heavens on Mercator’s Projection. This was the last decorative celestial reference in the 19th century and even served as inspiration of H.P. Lovecraft who notes it as prized possession in letter to Maurice Moe in 1915. All fully bound in leather with gilt decoration - to fascias spines and edges - and titling. All have marbled papertrims and frontis and end papers. This is a FABULOUS set of this popular loquacious history of Europe with the first major account of the French Revolution. It is smart handsome gentlemanly and very clubbable. Some of the books have wear from shelving and are scuffed but this only adds a genial dignity and character. All have binder labels T. Sowler Manchester - the very model of a Victorian businessman on the front pastedowns. Spines have five ridges and six panels. The Atlas 108 pages - published 1850 contains maps of countries and towns and plans of 'battles and sieges &c.' The covers are worn and scuffed. Within there are some small storage marks about. The pages are clean startlingly bright and clear finely detailed and the colours for various regiments fresh. Volume 1 633 pgs; 1849: wear to edges and spine but dignified and secure. The contents are tight and clean. Covers 1774-1789. Vol 2 693 pgs; 1849. In very good handsome condition. Light wear bright gilt. Inside the contents are clean and fresh. There is a silk bookmark. 1789 - 1793. Vol 3 635 pgs; 1749. The stamped decoration as with all other volumes is neat and unworn. The spine has some wear but is benign and kindly. Two additional maps are affixed to the endpapers and are extra to those included in the book. These were sometime added by an owner of the volume. 4to publisher's original brown calf over brown cloth covered boards the spine lettered in gilt the upper cover with hand-printed titling label. vi 27 maps on 28 pages A very well preserved copy. The binding with some wear from time and use still strong and showing minor separation at the free-flies and pastedowns the maps all in good order clean and well coloured. EARLY PRINTING OF EWING'S GENERAL ATLAS. Now scarce as a complete book many copies have been broken up with the maps sold separately. The maps have been handcoloured and are preserved very well. A double-page world map is presented first and then the maps of the countries of European countries and Russia Asia Africa North America and South America. The U.S. map is quite interesting in that it includes only the states and territories recognized at the time of publication. The country is show bordering the Atlantic on the East but extending only into the Missouri Territory and Arkansas in the west. Oliver & Boyd hardcover

189715960New York: Sanborn-Perris Map Co. 1897. Third edition with additions. Hardcover. Good overall. Folio published in November 1897 with 18 hand colored maps including a title page on the key map. This is the third edition of the atlas according to the Library of Congress Census the first edition being published in 1886 but with only 13 sheets. The second edition was published in 1891 with an extra 2 sheet making a total of 16 sheets. Small private library stamp on the verso of the key map. There are very small pencil annotations on the maps obviously by F.J. Washburn the local insurance agent. <br /> Originating in London in the mid 18th century insurance maps had become invaluable in the US in the 1860's when Sanborn started work. The company started to standardize the maps and publish them in atlases under the town or city. Each map/sheet measures 21 x 25" and is drawn to a scale of 50 feet to an inch with color applied by hand at the time of publication. Every atlas records all town buildings shown to scale its construction material and use noted as well as fire-proofing thickness of walls elevators chimneys fire alarm boxes hydrants sprinkler systems and a wealth of other detail. Ultimately Sanborn produced maps and atlases for 12000 locations. Being so specific the demand was very slight. The Library of Congress estimates that there were usually fewer than twenty orders for a single sheet so production was small and usually produced for a specific Insurance company or agent. Because of this a very small number of copies of any atlas are offered on the market today. The maxim "if it turns up buy it because you won't find another copy" springs to mind.
