A lavish engraving from a series of portraits of Hapsburg royalty published by Pieter Soutman.<br/> <br/> This stunning portrait is from a suite of engravings published by Pieter Claesz Soutman. Executed by some of the most noted seventeenth century engravers the suite is a lavish series of portraits of the Hapsburg dynasty. A prolific engraver and publisher Soutman began his career as a painter in Ruben's studio. In 1628 he returned to Haarlem and founded his own workshop which was responsible for training some of the most celebrated printmakers in Holland. Marguerite of Lorraine born into the prestigious House of Lorraine in Nancy emerged as a figure of strength and resilience. Raised by her aunt Catherine of Lorraine the Abbess of Remiremont after the loss of her mother Marguerite's life was intertwined with political upheavals and clandestine romance. She became the Duchess of Orléans through a secret marriage to Gaston Duke of Orléans the younger brother of King Louis XIII. This union was kept hidden due to France and Lorraine being historical adversaries. Thus Marguerite's relationship was marred by betrayals and political maneuvering as Henri II Duke of Montmorency exposed her elopment leading to the annulment of her marriage to Gaston. It was only on his deathbed that King Louis XIII pardoned Gaston and allowed him to remarry Marguerite. They solemnized their marriage for the third time and were welcomed at the French court where Marguerite took on the title of Madame. As Madame she resided in the Luxembourg Palace and later at the Château de Blois. Although she was received warmly at the French court Marguerite faced personal challenges battling agoraphobia and rarely participating in her courtly duties. After Gaston's death in exile the Dukedom of Orléans passed to his nephew and Marguerite became the Dowager Duchess of Orléans. Very Good. 24mo contemporary roan blind ruled neat old reback/tips worn 142pp 2p 46pp includes two un-numbered half titles in the foliation a final blank. A-H12. The printer's mark is the amillary sphere of Foppens To page 93 are the love affairs & from thence to 142 are the letters written to the Duchess de Beaufort & the Marchioness de Vernueil extracted from the originals found after the death of Mademoiselle d'Estoges. The final 46 pages are a selection of good deeds and memorable sayings of the King. The first French edition appeared in 1696 and was updated and added to for years afterwards; this an early Italian text version. The geographical portion is of special interest having descriptions of New France and Florida California as an island and mention of Antarctica as well as the recently discovered lands of Australia. A fascinating uncut copy with original paper boards.The pages are in a pattern of 4 large uncut sheets followed by 4 pages with little margin. . Very effective in making the volumes slope inwards on the foredge.<br /> <br /> Two volume edition; Vol I: 40 388pp; Vol II: 28 456pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 22 full page heraldic illustration plates in Vol. I depicting coats of arms shields blazonry; with woodcut initials tailpiece illustrations typeface ornamentation throughout. Three volumes in one being two volumes complete of 'Le Roman Comique' and one volume complete of 'Histoire des Amours de Henry IV'.In French.'Le Roman Comique' follows the adventures of a group of strolling players. It's a humorous tale dramatising the misadventures of the characters told through four interpolated tales. Written by Paul Scarron an author who was the first husband of Francoise d'Aubigne who later became Madame de Maintenon and secretly married King Louis XIV of France.'Histoire des Amours de Henry IV' is a fictionalised account of the love life of Henry IV of France. The author Louise Marguerite of Lorraine was a cousin by marriage of the King and was one of his lovers.With an engraved title to 'Le Roman Comique' Volume I. Register runs as: 4 A-L12 M8 2-3 A-K12 L9 A-G12 H11.'Le Roman Comique' Volume II is bound without leaf 1. In a full vellum binding. Externally generally smart with light marks and a little age-toning as is usual with a vellum binding. Light bumping to the extremities. Ink to the spine. Hinges are starting but firm. A title vignette with the arms of the Duke of Guise Henri II de Lorraine 1614-1664. These memoirs were published by the Duke's secretary sieur de Saint-Yon who allegedly asked Philippe Goibeau to write them. It should be noted however that Augustin Calmet Bibl. lorraine 594 does not doubt that these memoirs are from the duke's hand. Fine printing in large characters. Contemporary full brown speckled and glazed sheep binding. Richly decorated spine with raised bands. Brown morocco title label. Narrow split to joints at head. Last compartment narrowly split on upper joint. Missing one third of the title label. 3 corners slightly bumped. Pale gilt crayon letters have been added where those of the title label are missing namely ME before MOIRE and the G of Guise. Slight trace of pale dampstain from p.122 in upper margin on several leaves then appearing erratically; this dampstain becomes yellow from p. 744 to the end and is more pronounced. 18th-century armorial bookplate: S.R.I. comes de Wiser eer Dinand Andreas. ""These Memoirs deal with the Naples expedition where the Duke of Guise tries to have the claims of the house of Lorraine on the kingdom of the Two Sicilies accepted and where his attempt ends with captivity among the Spanish"" Sources de l'histoire de France 785. Here is what abbé Gallois says about it in the Journal des Savants in 1668: ""It must be admitted that there is in these Memoirs something indefinable which cannot be expressed and which is not ordinarily found in histories whether this comes from M. de Guise's particular genius or by birth or perhaps from the fact that those who have themselves performed great exploits have a particular advantage in writing about them"". Ownership inscription “Marelle fils ainé.†In excellent condition. First edition of this important and occult-leaning treatise on magnetism. In October 1690 a powerful storm damaged the cross-topped steeple of the Cathedral de Notre Dame in Chartres such that it had to be demolished and rebuilt. When it was taken down the iron cross was observed to be coated in rust making it a strong magnet that attracted the lightning of the storm essentially conducting Franklin’s kite and key experiment 60 years earlier. <br /> This phenomenon sparked pun intended Vallemont’s interest in magnets and their properties; this book focuses on the Chartres incident but also what it means in magnetic theory. He describes the magnetic field of the earth compass technology magnetic fluid under a microscope and experiments in attempting to magnetize objects.
