With over three dozen pages with fabric swatches sketches and small artworks including two paper weaving samples and a watercolor plus clippings from periodicals laid-in or laid down. Light creasing and wear to pages light occasional offsetting from fabric samples. A very good very robust example of an advanced course in textiles sewing and fashion that also reveals the Depression-era labor history of women in the garment industry. This portfolio represents all the skills a Depression-era woman would need to create her own garments and other textile goods: sewing dyeing and weaving; selecting the right fabrics from stores; repurposing discarded household items into tools to save money e.g. a cigar box into a loom; and much more. Periodical clippings of illustrations of women weaving in industrial and commercial settings indicate that students who completed this correspondence course would not only be able to produce textile goods for their own families but also find skilled employment in the garment industry.
19597729<p>Lorraine Hansberry's tour de force was the first Broadway play produced to be written by a Black woman. <i>A Raisin in the Sun</i> explores the dynamics of a Black family in America as they confront prejudice and the profound barriers due to racism in all aspects of their daily lives. Before its debut Hansberry worked as a Black civil rights activist and journalist for Black papers and is now known to have been a closeted lesbian leading to intense isolation even after she was catapulted into fame.</p><p>The play debuted at The Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1958 and the book was published the following year it includes photographs of the original production and therefore documents a crucial moment in the history of performance arts.</p><p><i>Hardcover 142 pp. Quarter cream cloth and textured marbled brown card with paper label photograph of actor Glynn Turman as Travis in centre. Some wear on top and bottom edges of cloth in the spine overall in very good condition. Dust jacket is in good condition with chips at spine and a few small closed tears on the bottom edge. This is a very important work which chronicles the inhumane struggles faced by the African-American community published at the height of political tension in 1964. With text written by Lorraine Hansberry this book highlights the 'struggle for the humanization of our country' documenting all aspects of the 'social revolution' from the 'dauntless good humor of a twelve-year-old girl in a Georgia jail' to the 'rage and hatred of a Ku Klux Klansman'. 'The Movement' was prepared with assistance from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or the SNCC.Written by Lorraine Hansberry 1930-1965 a playwright and writer who was the first African-American woman to have a play performed on Broadway titled 'Raisin in the Sun'. Hansberry also worked at the Pan-Africanist newspaper 'Freedom' helping to document the African struggle for liberation. With photographs by Danny Lyon an American photographer and filmmaker who was the main photographer for the SNCC and was present for almost all of the major historical events during the Civil Rights Movement. In the publisher's original cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally excellent with just a bit of fading to the margins of boards and the spine. Dust wrapper is smart with just some slight edge wear chipping and some loss particularly to the top edge of the spine region. Wrap is lightly age-toned with a few marks. Internally firmly bound.
