Complete set of Annie Lorrain Smith's catalogue of British lichens including illustrations. Volume I is the second edition from 1918 Volume II is the second edition revised from 1926. Both volumes are in original publisher's cloth binding. Annie Lorrain Smith was a British lichenologist and mycologist. Smith was one of the first women elected Fellows of the Linnaean Society in 1904 and was later a member of their council. She became an OBE in 1934 for contributions in her field. Gold engraved lettering to the spines. Volume I includes 71 monochrome plates and Volume II includes 63. Collated complete. In original publisher's cloth binding. Some bumping to the head and tail of the spines. The head of the spine on vol I has a tear. The back board of vol II is slightly marked. Front hinge of vol II is starting but firm. A very rare anthology of 58 tunes for chapter use of the Order of Chosen Friends a fraternal organization founded in May 1879. This is very similar to the previous volume of songs that Pitkin had compiled with Jennie E. Mathews Gems of Song for Eastern Star Chapters 1882. The two volumes share in common 25 songs one of which ''Coronation'' has different lyrics but with Mystic Songs featuring 33 songs that do not appear in Gems of Song. The volume was dedicated by Pitkin in ''F.A.P.'' Fraternity Aid and Protection the motto of the order to the Members of the Order of Chosen Friends. Lorraine J. Pitkin 1845-1922 was a important figure in the Order of the Eastern Star OEC serving in leadership roles in both the Grand Chapter of Illinois and in the General Grand Chapter where she served as Most Worthy Grand Matron 1880-1883 and Right Worthy Grand Secretary 1889-1919. Fold marks inherent to the envelope enclosure envelope included. Jean Lorrain is recovering with difficulty and very slowly from his operation: ""Not yet healed! All the misfortunes all the complications all the relapses. Operated on June 30th fifty-eight days of filth anguish and suffering and two dressings per day."" and feels aged by this harsh physical ordeal: ""Vous me retrouverez avec des cheveux blancs et plus mince que vô."" His convalescence will take him outside Paris: ""Je pars demain pour Plombières et j'y resterai un mois. Je n'assisterai donc pas à vos débuts de septembre."" and he worries about his author's rights for ""Fleur de berge"" a song for which he wrote the lyrics and which Yvette Guilbert performs and for which she composed the music: ""Fleur de Berge a été chantée plus de mille fois par tous et partout et je n'ai jamais jamais touché un sou ! Avouez que c'est peu je voudrais pourtant qu'elle me rapporte de quoi vous envoyer une fleur. Est-ce que pour Morphinée et celles que je compte vous faire ce sera toujours peau de balle comme ça."" The writer completely foreign to and lost in these legal intricacies asks the singer for advice: ""Vous devez être très au courant vous. Ecrivez-moi un peu comment on fait comment vous faites. Lorrain was a dedicated disciple of dandyism and spent much of his time amongst the fashionable artistic circles in France as well as contributing to the satirical weekly Le Courrier Francais. Bound in full reverse calf with the original paper wraps bound in. Externally sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with small marks to the boards. A crack to the head of the spine with leather coming away from the text block slightly. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark.
