With over three dozen pages with fabric swatches sketches and small artworks including two paper weaving samples and a watercolor plus clippings from periodicals laid-in or laid down. Light creasing and wear to pages light occasional offsetting from fabric samples. A very good very robust example of an advanced course in textiles sewing and fashion that also reveals the Depression-era labor history of women in the garment industry. This portfolio represents all the skills a Depression-era woman would need to create her own garments and other textile goods: sewing dyeing and weaving; selecting the right fabrics from stores; repurposing discarded household items into tools to save money e.g. a cigar box into a loom; and much more. Periodical clippings of illustrations of women weaving in industrial and commercial settings indicate that students who completed this correspondence course would not only be able to produce textile goods for their own families but also find skilled employment in the garment industry.

The high school year book of A Raisin in the Sun author Lorraine Hansberry pictured on page 36 and inscribed by her "Good Luck & Best Wishes" with an arrow pointing to her printed name. Hansberry also appears on page 105 in a group portrait of the school's debate forum. Another nationally known author appearing in these pages is Sam Greenlee on page 55; he has not signed this yearbook. <p>Bound in publisher's original padded leatherette embossed pictorial cloth stamped in gilt. Very Good with wear to extremities three vertical lines to the rear cover lightly soiled light foxing to textblock edge. Tear to bottom gutter at rear Autographs page. Additionally signed throughout by many classmates. Owner's name William Sharp to title page and front pastedown. <p>Although she does not appear here in the rolls of the school's drama club Hansberry was just 11 years away from being the first Black woman to have a play produced on Broadway. First Edition First Printing. <br /><br />A theatre review by Lorraine Hansberry appears in this issue of Masses & Mainstream the cultural magazine of the Communist Party USA. Hansberry 1930-1965 wrote an enthusiastic review of William Branch's "A Medal for Willie" which the Committee for the Negro in the Arts presented at Harlem's Club Baron. <br /><br />The play concerns the mother of a young African-American who was killed in the Korean War. Willie's mother Mrs. Jackson was due to receive a medal from a general but she refuses to accept it calling out the racism and hypocrisy of Jim Crow America. "This is good" Hansberry writes in her review. "This is exciting and moving.Watching the play I experience the glorious feeling that perhaps now -- in our time -- the dream of a New Harlem Theatre shall be realized."</p><p>Although she points out a few flaws in the play she concludes her review writing: "But the play is a powerful indictment of Negro oppression. It has terrific impact. Don't miss it." <br /><br />This marks yet another appearance by Hansberry in Masses & Mainstream. The September 1950 issue contained her first published work the poem "Flag From a Kitchenette Window" published when she was "a twenty-year-old art student in Chicago." Another poem "Lynchsong" was published in July 1951.</p><p>Hansberry went on to write her most famous work "A Raisin in the Sun" a play about the struggles of a Black family in Chicago. It opened on Broadway in March 1959 and starred Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.</p><p>Besides Hansberry's review this issue contains excerpts from a novel by V.J. Jerome; Richard O. Boyer's appreciation of Pettis Perry an African-American who was a Communist Party official; labor news including an article by Howard Fast; drawings by Hugo Gellert; and more. <br /><br />This issue of Masses & Mainstream is rare.
