Published in 1890. 71 xxvi pp. This is a former library book with stamps bookplates and a call number sticker. The covers show heavy edge wear particularly at the corners where the boards are visible underneath of the cloth. The spine was painted by the library and the title was written along the spine in contrasting white. Text block edges are stamped. A bookplate obscures an interesting inscription on the front pastedown. Hinges are cracked but have been temporarily repaired with archival glue. Interior is tanned but clean and unmarked. Edward Shippen IV 1729-1806 was lawyer judge government official and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia. In 1791 he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court serving with Jasper Yeates and Edward Burd both kinsmen and former students. Shippen became chief justice in 1799 but in 1804 was impeached on flimsey political grounds. The next year the Pennsylvania Senate acquitted him and his associates. 8vo 491 86 pp. The text is followed by a 96-page appendix which cites numerous legal points in previous cases as they relate to this one. Hardcover original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather with black label to spine. Exterior shows wear and soiling in leather is frayed and peeling to the finish. Internal binding is good other than some minor pulling. Pages are lightly tone due to age and some foxing and spotting is present with the worst being the end pages. No signatures or bookplates no handwriting or library markings present. Top raised edge of calf from spine above gilt and board top edge-line is gone wear to bottom edge with a small 1/8 inch square piece missing. Hinges and all signatures are tight. Some corner wear and bumping though retaining square. Previous Owner name inside front cover in red ink stamp black ink stamp "271" on foot edge of pages. No other marks. Photos upon request. Some toning evident in margins and whatever pattern was originally given the page block edges has worn to an uneven brown; the front endpaper has split along the hinge and there is some residue of a bookplate on the pastedown; the binding remains secure though with a short tear in the legal-yellow cloth along the left front two shallow depressions at the front foreedge wear to the cloth at free and bound corners and noticeable handling prints; decoration at the spine including the red and black leather labels for title and year shows concurrent wear including chipping of leather and flaking of the gilt borders on the leather; nonetheless designed to be sturdy and to maintain its dignity on the shelf in which endeavor it continues to succeed. 932pp A well-kept reprint of the climactic volume in the golden age "Colony of New York" series that preceded the popular multiverse crossover "Constitutional Convention" starring John A. Hancock and Benjamin Franklin Sr. Spoiler alert The letter at the end of March 1776 alludes to events in Boston and taxation problems but later popularizations left out the anger at British welcome of "popery" in Quebec the decline of the three-branch government and the action-packed amendment scenes in which representatives competed to restate portions of the bill with more negative superlatives.; Tall 4to.
