By the late fifteenth century fairs produced by Italian merchants made Lyon the banking center of France. Given its economic importance and the jealousy of other cities and on occasion kings of France the city was careful to record and assert its rights. As much a political statement as it a legal handbook the Privileges is a compilation of laws orders privileges and other legislation granted to the fair of Lyon from 1349 to 1563.
