Ms. Wanser was the Senior Paper Conservator in the Conservation Division of the U.S. Library of Congress. From the Washington Map Society's website: The Washington Map Society supports and promotes map collecting cartography and the study of cartographic history. The Portolan the largest and most-widely distributed publication of its kind in the Americas is issued three times per year in the Spring/Summer the Fall and Winter. As of Spring 2025 122 issues have been published. Five years after the founding of the Washington Map Society the membership decided in 1984 to establish a newsletter which grew over the years into an internationally circulated and recognized journal. The Portolan is known for its articles by internationally known scholars and researchers who share their findings. These encompass research on maps and mapmakers from all periods and on areas all over the world. Exploring the World of Maps as noted in the Society’s tagline is what the journal seeks to do. Every year the journal contains the winning article of the Society’s Dr. Walter W. Ristow Prize for an Academic Paper in the History of Cartography. In addition to numerous articles the journal contains: Notices of meetings; A selected compilation of local and worldwide map meetings and exhibitions; reviews of recent books in the history of cartography; and a compilation of recent publications in the history of cartography. The first step in preserving historical maps is to assess their condition and identify any damage or deterioration. Conservators employ a range of specialized techniques to address these issues including: Cleaning: Removing dirt grime and other surface contaminants<br /> Mending: Repairing tears holes and creases; Humidification: Restoring moisture balance to prevent further damage; Deacidification: Neutralizing acidic compounds that cause paper degradation; These meticulous restoration efforts breathe new life into these fragile treasures ensuring their physical integrity for years to come. The framing and housing of the map/document can also contribute to it preservation or deterioriation. Also avoiding direct sunlight as well as protective glass can aid in preservation. Thomas F. Sander retired from the Army as a Colonel in 1996 after 30 years of distinguished service. He then started 19 years and still counting of volunteering his services to the history of discoveries and cartographic community. Tom has served as of the Washington Map Society Vice-President in 2000-2001 and President 2001-2002. He has been editor of The Portolan: the Journal of the Washington Map Society since 1997. As editor Tom changed the thrice-yearly The Portolan from a black-and-white to a multi-colored publication increasing its size from approximately 40 pages in each issue to 80 pages. Founded in 1979 The Washington Map Society is a United States based organization supporting map collecting and the history science and art of cartography. The Society or WMS has about 400 members drawn from throughout the United States with about 50 members. About 60% live outside the Washington DC Maryland Delaware and Virginia radius confirming the importance of our journal The Portolan and the WMS E-newsletter. WMS advances its goals by convening periodic speaker events organizing field trips publishing a cartographic journal The Portolan three times yearly and by annually sponsoring the Ristow Prize competition recognizing research achievement in cartographic history.
