Sir Henry Sumner Maine born in 1822 was a British historian and comparative jurist. In a morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally smart with just some slight rubbing to the extremities and some fading to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just some scattered instances of foxing. One colour lithograph reverse mounted on glass sized 8 x 13 in. fitted with brass chain frame and hanger possibly used as chimney flue cover minor edgewear to glass minor soiling to chain very minor spotting dustsoiling still an excellent piece w/ bright strong image. The USS Maine ACR-1 was launched in 1895 and was an armored cruiser together with her near-sister ship USS Texas with two gun turrets staggered en echelon rather than on the centerline with fore gun sponsoned out on the starboard side of the ship. As she took seven years to build she was out of date upon launching. She sailed with the North Atlantic Squadron operating from Norfolkd along the East Coast and the Caribbean. Feb. 15 1898 an explosion obliterated the forward third of the ship killing 260 sailors and the Spanish-American War began in April 1898 two months later. Atwood b. 1844 was a Massachusetts nautical maritime painter who operated studios in Boston and Maine and painted the original for Brigadier General H.A. Wheeler in 1895 and in 1898 the colour print was issued as a patriotic souvenir. Victorian flue covers were used after the chimney flues were removed in 19th-century homes following Winter and often served as an advertising giveaway. F.N. Atwood, unknown

18103720<p><b><i>Early Maine Murder Trial Gone Awry</i></b><br /></p><p>An account of a murder trial in Malta now Windsor in the District of Maine. Paul Chadwick was a surveyor on what was then the northern frontier of Maine and in an area where disputed land titles were common. Chadwick was shot while conducting a survey by a group of landowners disguised as Indians. Despite fairly overwhelming evidence of the guilt of the accused the jury found all not guilty. <br /></p>Previous owner's Rice Dudley book label on front pastedown. 1850#299<p>Broadside 14" x 8" double column signed in type by three selectmen with attestation by town clerk at end. Folded in quarters with several tiny holes no loss a number of creases minor stains one short marginal tear etc. but overall quite sound.</p><p>Comprised of 19 Articles proscribing certain types of behavior the unique broadside specifies fines or other punishments for lawbreakers. Most interesting is Article 4: "No boy or other person shall be allowed to play at the game of bat and ball in the public streets of the village. Any person offending against this article shall forfeit and pay fifty cents for each offence."</p><p>In addition to the obvious like public drunkenness these include: riding horses at a gallop in town or more than a walk on the covered bridge; "any boy or other person" who hangs onto a sleigh or carriage; anyone "causing dogs or any other animals to fight" in the streets; "Any person wantonly exposing himself sic naked in sight of any dwelling house"; a person injuring an ornamental tree on any street; anyone mutilating or pulling down signs or public notices or throwing dirt or setting off firecrackers or sliding down hills in the public streets &c. &c. </p><p>According to internet resources Biddeford Maine passed a city charter and adopted a mayoral form of government in 1855.</p><p>Not recorded in OCLC.</p>

Light scattered foxing old folds else Very Good.<br /> <br /> On July 4 1844 Maine's Democratic Party Convention was held in Alfred. Joshua Herrick a farmer was Maine's Democratic Congressman for its First Congressional District during the 1843-1845 Session. He sought renomination. But he was challenged by Judge William Alen Hayes. Hayes's campaign manager was future Supreme Court Justice Nathan Clifford whose manipulations aroused deep resentment over lawyers' control of the democratic process. This broadside reflects those class divisions emerging within the Democratic Party.<br /> Hayes who "is without doubt the richest man in the District-- has all the monied institutions at his control or in his interest-- all the aristocracy a queer idea in a dem. party but nevertheless true all or nearly all the Lawyers. Now what has Col. Herrick to go against this tremendous influence He is what we call self-made. has comparatively but little property but he has the confidence of the yeomanry of the District." Despite this appeal Herrick abandoned his effort to secure the Party's renomination and withdrew his name from consideration. Roosevelt-Richards is just recently being recognized for her place in American artBorn: <br /><br />Known for: Juvenile book and magazine illustration<br />1905 was the year she came to Wilmington.Delaware and studied with Howard Pyle remaining there for 7 years.By the time Richards had begun her studies under Pyle she was a published illustrator with works appearing in juvenile literature books.In a 1927 interview she recalled Pyle's attitude toward his teaching: "Twice a week we would come together and Mr. Pyle would criticize our efforts and offer suggestions. He always acted as if it were a privilege we gave him." After her stay in Wilmington Richards settled permanently in New Haven actively participating in the art community there.<br />

On page three is printed the section of the Maine statutes relating to election results. Docketed in the verso. Spotted Good or so.<br /> <br /> The document is signed in type at the end by Committee Members Daniel Gilbert Thomas Browne and Ethan Earle. It is dated in ink "Sept. 5th 1826." The Committee urges Maine "to send forth from our state an unequivocal voice in favor of the Head of the National Government" by voting for Adams supporters Enoch Lincoln Governor Stephen Longfellow Congress and other members of the State ticket.<br /> Allusions to the bitter 1824 presidential contest are numerous; the wounds inflicted by that campaign are obviously still open: "We have placed the man of our choice at the head of our government." If "we abandon him to the rude tempest of a bitter opposition how shall we answer it to our consciences and our country. What then has the President done that we should leave him to his enemies.
