Leather a bit dried and cracked some light dustiness and a couple small damp stains to lid else an excellent example. <br /> <br /> Small portable letter trunk manufactured by Nathaniel B. March 1783-1862 "Saddle Harness and Trunk Maker" located at State-Street in Portsmouth New Hampshire. His manufacturer's label further notes "Also Fur Caps & Curled Hair Mattresses." 18140072711814. Quarter Vellum. Cloth Boards. Near Fine. Spectacular manuscript estate survey maps from early 19th Century. Folio 53 by 39 cm. 6 text pages followed by ten double paged maps all handsomely colored and detailed. The first nine maps are numbered 2 to 10 per table in front showing that notwithstanding the enumeration there is not a missing map. One map with extra fold-out flap addenda. An additional double-sided hand-colored map in the back inserted into the foliio and then two additional hand-colored survey maps by de la Marche or his son loose -- never bound in -- architectural sketch of the chateau footprint done in pen-and-ink -- two other smaller less visually exciting maps and some correspondence. Maps are colored in greens reds yellows and blues. The washes of color together with the obvious precision of the draftsmanship render these maps utilitarian in purpose originally pleasing to the eye and very decorative. Tiny vignettes of churches mark villages and forests are signified by dots representing trees as was the convention. This chateau belonged to M. François Louis Barrairon at the time. It is located in the Indre-et-Loire Department and is between and equidistant to Tours and Vendome. Condition: bottom of leaves stained and sometimes slightly chipped or chewed looking. A few other minor chips. A few un-obtrusive well-executed repairs of tears. unknown

Not exlibrary. Overall in VERY GOOD condition. The "Paris Commune" French: La Commune de Paris was a government that briefly ruled Paris from 18 March more formally from 26 March to 28 May 1871. It has been variously described as either Anarchist or Socialist in tenor depending on the ideology of the commenter. Karl Marx described it as a vindication of his Communist ideas while the anarchist Mikhail Bakunin countered that since it did not rely on a vanguard and did not seize the State or attempt to create a new revolutionary State it was actually anarchist. In a formal sense the Paris Commune of 1871 was simply the local authority council of a town or district French "commune" which exercised power in Paris for two months in the spring of 1871. But the conditions in which it was formed its controversial decrees and tortured end make it one of the more important political episodes of the time. . First Edition. Full Cloth. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Dark maroon cloth binding with gilt lettering. Clean text; 372 pages indexed. Light wear to the tips a bit of rub along the spine. This is an ASSOCIATION COPY with the armorial bookplate on front paste-down of General Sir Bindon Blood K.C.B. 1842-1940 who served in India Afghanistan and the 2nd Boer War. Reverse of FFEP contains small stamp from a bookseller in Bombay opposite another ownership signature. The general has signed the Title Page and dated it 1903. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The workers of Paris joined by mutinous National Guardsmen seized the city and set about re-organising society in their own interests based on workers' councils. They could not hold out however when more troops retook the city and massacred 30000 workers in bloody revenge. The Paris Commune is often said to be the first example of working people taking power. For this reason it is a highly significant event. This study is complete with its folding map of Paris in 1871. Spine slightly sunned. Minor rubbing along edges. Upper front corner slightly bumped not affecting pages. Previous owner's signature on fly leaf. Some foxing on very first and very last pages. London: Harrison 1862. First Edition. A scarce work that applies colour theory to flower arrangements and small garden designs through a series of unusual hand-coloured wood engravings. The diagrams demonstrate the best colour combinations for groups of three table arrangements followed by illustrations of different coloured borders for small gardens. T.C. March participated in table arrangement competitions held by Dobson and Pearce St. James Street in 1861 and also made arrangements of the Great Exhibition of 1862. Illustrated with engravings throughout of fish flies tackle etc. Bernard Shea Horne 1905-1970 was retired board chairman of the Joseph Home Company department store founded by his grandfather in Pittsburg an ardent fisherman and a noted authority on Izaak Walton. Mr. Horne assembled the largest known private collection of angling works by Izaak Walton and authored a definitive bibliography of the 385 editions of "The Compleat Angler.” His collection of editions of The Compleat Angler was gifted to the University of Pittsburgh in 1973 by Mrs. Horne as a memorial to her late husband. His father Bernard S. Horne Sr. retired from the family business when he was in his thirties to pursue his interests in golf and photography. . J. March hardcover

He was also responsible for bringing the eucalyptus tree to Santa Barbara. Ellwood Bluffs County Park and Ellwood Union School in the region have been named after him. Written by Francis March "considered the principal founder of modern comparative linguistics in Anglo-Saxon" the book was said to be aimed at "training the pupil to see hear and think as well as to remember rightly."
