Exceptionally handsome tight first edition of this detailed guide to American participation of this world's fair to end all world's fairs held in Paris between 12 April and 12 November 1900. Like all world's fairs its intention was to celebrate mankind's accomplishments and advances in every field imaginable -- but with the debut of the new century it was felt appropriate to celebrate accomplishments of the preceding century as well. This remarkable copy bears a red-bordered 4½" X 3/4" colophon slip typed in blue tipped to an inner flyleaf noting that "Twenty-five copies of this catalogue have been bound in this form for special distribution. This copy is numbered 11." Recipients of this specially-bound edition were likely important politicos of the day. The name of this special recipient has been giltstamped on the front board: "WILLIAM B. ALLISON SENATOR." From the collection of William B. Allison 1829-1908 the powerful Iowa Republican who as U.S. senator from that state 1873-1908 was one of the "big four" who controlled the Senate; as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for most of those years he championed tariff legislation and co-authored the Bland-Allison Act of 1878; as member of the Senate Finance Committee he was often courted by U.S. presidents to hold cabinet positions. Early 20th century bookplate on front pastedown notes "This book is part of Allison Memorial Collection Gift of Mrs. Jennie A. Brayton" and until deaccessioned was part of Allison's non-circulating collection at his hometown public library across the street from his Dubuque residence. According to Leland L. Sage in his 1956 biography "William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics" Allison owned "hundreds of books on government economics history banking finance and the tariff as well as volumes of American and English literature. An omnivorous reader Allison doubtless read most of these volumes if only for relaxation from the strain that accompanied his efforts to solve the many problems facing the Nation. Alexander Hamilton was his guidepost in finance Robert Burns his favorite poet and 'The Cotter's Saturday Night' his favorite poem." A superb copy of this rare edition with gilt as fresh and bright as the day applied. Société Anonyme des Imprimieres Lemercier hardcover

18191002411819. Paris de l'Imprimerie de Mme Ve Courcier rue du Jardinet no. 12 1819. 4pp. Unbound as issued. On 29 floréal an X 19 mai 1802 Napoleon Bonaparte 'Premier Consul' at that time passed a law to have the Canal Saint- Martin constructed together with the Canal Saint-Denis and the Canal de l'Ourcq. The project of the engineer Pierre Simon Girard 1765-1836 was chosen to resolve the problems of drinking water navigation in Paris. In 1790 he had won a price of the Academy for a work on the construction of canals and in 1798 he published the first work on the resistance of materials. By creating these canals there was the additional that a shortcut of the Seine was created. So ships could avoid the difficult center of Paris and ports could be built. Building of the canal Saint-Martin started in 1805 at both ends but the canal was only finished in 1825. Numerous difficulties related to constructing a canal in such an urban area had to be surmounted. The present document signed by Girard objects to a change that has been made in the initial project which wants to let the canal pass underneath the Hospital Saint-Louis. The author explains all his objections in detail. Important document for the history of the urbanisation of Paris. unknown

First editions of this uncommon set tracing the engineering and construction efforts by Vuignier 1798-1865 noted Parisian engineer to develop and expand the warehouse docks canal locks and canal infrastructure of the Canal de l’Ourcq into the Bassin de la Villette the largest artificial lake in Paris constructed under the reign of Napoleon I. Vuigner had not only overseen the construction of the original grain warehouse docks to feed Paris with the newly created canal link but from 1839-1840 was the original general manager of the Ourcq Canal Concession who designed and oversaw the construction of the five locks connecting the Canal de l’Ourcq into the Bassin de la Villette solving the severe sloping issue. As part of the development works carried out by Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann Vuigner oversaw the upgrading of the warehouse docks along the canals connecting to the Canal de l’Ourcq in order to solve water flow and depth issues of the Pont de Flandre and the Quai de la Gironde which are depicted here in drawings as are improved pumps and mechanisms for the locks. Two of the original warehouses survived at the end of the Bassin de la Villette and later converted into artists lofts but now they have been replaced by the MK2 cinema complexes and the areas in and around the Bassin and Canals have become thriving and popular outdoor areas. First Edition Thus. . 8vo publisher’s green cloth 107 pp. Some tearing and fraying to boards particularly at head of spine text block excellent very good minus overall. Very Good. The scarce Paris Universal Exposition edition of J.P. Whitney’s early title on the silver mines of Colorado. Whitney a wealthy sportsman from Boston with investments in Colorado traveled as the sole commissioner from Colorado to the Paris Universal Exposition in an effort to entice foreign investment in the mining industry which was suffering from a poor reputation as the costs of extraction grew higher. Whitney had published this title in pamphlet form a year earlier. Whitney shipped his own collection of Colorado minerals to France where it was the most extensive of any of the North American regions to be displayed receiving a gold medal from Napoleon III. A new title on Colorado minerals Colorado in the United States of America: Schedule of Ores Contributed by Sundry Persons to the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867 With Some Information about the Region and its Resources. Whitney also brought with him copies of his pamphlet in a special hardcover edition which we offer here. This is the second example we find on the market. Whitney would gain great popularity in Colorado for his efforts which did much to improve its standing. J.P. Whitney unknown
1856G5DC4C01U79OParis: Arthus-Bertrand printed by Becquet frères 1856. Later half blue cloth portfolio patterned white silk sides printed in blue in period style printed spine label. 1mo 63 x 46 cm. An album of views most including ships on the river from the Battle of Kinburn in the Crimean War comprising 17 plates: 1 tinted lithographed title-page 15 tinted and double-tinted lithographed views image size 30 x 46 cm and a lithographed map. Many views also coloured by hand. A rare lithographic print series commemorating the Battle of Kinburn Kil-Bouroun on the south bank of the Dnieper River near the Crimea. On 17 October 1855 during the Crimean War the French and British navies attacked the Russian outpost there with a fleet of ironclad ships destroying the fortifications within hours and suffering only light damage. This decisive success seven years before the famous battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack in the American Civil War heralded the demise of the traditional wooden warship. Though made from the land mostly after the battle itself nearly all show maritime scenes with large and detailed depictions of the ironclad ships on the ice-bound river. They also show the ruined fortifications in great detail. With some marginal tears repaired but still in very good condition with only an occasional minor spot. The portfolio is also very good with a couple small water stains on the silk of the front board. A lovely series of views of ironclad ships on the frozen Dnieper River during the Crimean War.l Collection De Vinck 17202-17206 17209 17211-17221; WorldCat 4 copies.
