A scientific publication serving as an attempt to illustrate the foundational principles of natural philosophy through the lens of popular toys and sports aiming to engage the youthful mind in scientific exploration while encompassing the fun aspects of play. At the start of the book the narrative introduces Tom Seymour who has returned home from school to Overton Lodge where his family eagerly awaits him. His father proposes to teach Tom about natural philosophy using toys intending to evoke both learning and enjoyment. Written by John Ayrton Paris a British physician and a possible inventor of the thaumatrope with W. Phillips in April 1825. Illustrated by George Cruikshank a British caricaturist and book illustrator praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. Bound by Sotheran & Co. London. Bound in half crushed morocco with marbled boards. Externally sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the paper on the boards with a small crack to the head of the rear joint. Front hinge tender. Internally firmly bound with the front free endpaper loosening. There are many street scenes including the Rue de Rival L'Avenue de loper Place de la Republic monuments and architecture.<br /> <br /> The tour begins in Scotland and includes a departure at the train station wonderful shot of the train and passengers waiting on the platform as well as thatched roof cottages and gardens castles Edinburgh and London. It concludes with images of the main square in Brussels the Belgian country side and Holland including the iconic windmill shot. The final shot is on board ship the photographer with 2 fellow travelers looking very proud of himself.<br /> <br /> The album 8 x 6". Images 3 x 3 1/2" loosely inserted into card stock mounts. Very scarce original souvenir puzzle game issued for the fourth great Paris World’s Fair celebrating through pomp and events the Centennial of the French Revolution and the storming of the Bastille. The Exposition was intended to pull France out of a ruinous recession and attracted over 61000 exhibitors as well as 32 million visitors many of whom came to view the iconic Eiffel Tower. This puzzle celebrates several of the pavilions at the Exposition including Palais des Beaux-Arts designed by Joseph Brouvard filled with painting and flanking the Eiffel Tower providing visitors; the Palais de Trocadero held over from the famed 1878 Exposition celebrating the renewal of Paris following the Franco-Prussian War; as well as the Ministere de la Guerre which featured an Arms & Armour exhibition as well as displays of knightly tournaments assorted uniforms and cannon. The Maison Egyptienne and Rue au Caire would fuel the Orientalist movement and fascination with the Middle East among artists writers and the industrial arts well into the 20th Century. The Exposition was far larger than any previously held occupying over 66 acres featuring an Avenue des Nations elaborate exhibition palaces the completed head of the Statue of Liberty and the first Exposition to feature outdoor electric lighting with massive arc lights. These images include the an updated public aquarium featuring undersea grottoes inspired by Jules Verne stories the Palais de Trocadero the Palais du Champ de Mars statue of the Republic the Galerie du Travail showing stoves weaving machines and more; as well as the statuary in the Grande Galerie Italienne. Etienne Neurdein 1832-after 1915 and his brother Louis Antonin 1840-after 1915 were intrepid traveling photographers throughout French Northern Africa particularly the Sahara and Algeria in the 1870’s and also known for portraiture and monuments photos. They were later awarded the status as official photographers of both 1889 and 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. The Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 introduced marvels which would transform the 20th Century the Modern Age featuring diesel engines talking films escalators the first magnetic audio recorder called the telegraphone and the massive Ferris wheel spread over 543 acres featuring 83000 exhibitors. The compiler has included photos of the Porte Monumental the Pavilion of Nations the Palace of Decorative Arts Palace of Costumes & Textiles The Cambodian Pavilion the Cambodian pagoda the Chinese Pavilion the Palace of Electricity and many others. The images all retain a strong contrast and unlike many of the commercial images produced at the time often show wandering patrons or crowds or a focus on many of the exceptional Art Nouveau architectural details which ornamented the Exposition. The remainder of the album focuses on a September 1901 summer holiday trip to the beaches of Arromanches with scenes of fishing boats pulled up on the sand views of the headland birds-eye photo of the commune and town views. Arromanches would 43 later serve as the site of the Mulberry artificial harbor installations and the Normandy D-Day landings. Handsomely bound by Ramage of London in full brown morocco with gilt fleur-de-lis devices to the corners of the boards and spine compartments and with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine. Gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 34 fine photogravure plates proof impressions produced by Goupil & Cie 64 further full-page plates and 50 in-text drawings. A very good copy the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the spine and joints rubbing to the corners a few light scuffs to the boards and a touch of cracking to the front hinge. The contents with scattered foxing to the endpapers are otherwise clean and crisp throughout. The plates remain fresh and bright. One of a very small limitation of this extensively illustrated guide to the Paris Salon exhibition of 1880 printed on Japon paper and with wonderfully sharp proof impressions of the photogravure plates. Intended for children and originally composed for the author's family this three-volume work about science was first published in 1827. Originally published anonymously in later editions authorship was credited to Paris. Dedicated to the writer Maria Edgeworth it aims "to blend amusement with instruction" which Paris states Edgeworth has "satisfactorily demonstrated" in her own novels. Topics covered in volume 1 include momentum geometry elasticity and rotatory motion demonstrated using a yo-yo a jack-in-the-box and a slingshot among other toys and games. A fascinating work in science education the work seeks to prove "how profitably and agreeably the machinery of fiction may be worked for the dissemination of truth." Shows a view of Le Boulevard de la Madeleine in Paris one of the four 'grands boulevards' in Paris filled with horses and carriages and the corner of the Eglise de la Madeleine to the left. Photographer is noted as "X Phot" at the bottom of the print. According to the Treadwell Resource on stereo photographers X was used by E. Neurdein of Paris and Marseilles France. Attractive little guidebook to Paris and its monuments. Albert-Etienne Montemont was born on August 20 1788 in Rupt-sur-Moselle the son of Jean-Joseph Montemont a forest ranger and Agnes Joly. He did well in his studies at the college in Remiremont and learned German while living with a German family to whom his parents had sent him. In 1805 he joined the administration of combined duties and held various positions until 1815 in Epinal then Valence Gap Italy and again in Gap. A fervent Bonapartist he then chose to devote himself to literature; he spent time in England as a tutor and traveled to various European countries. He wrote translations tourist guides travelogues and poetry. Initiated into Freemasonry during the Empire he joined the revolutionary lodge Les Amis de la Verite in Paris in 1821 but after the Fieschi assassination attempt in 1836 he affiliated himself with the Grande Loge Centrale de Paris. He was behind the Vosges banquets in Paris in 1818. In 1830 he returned to a civil service position at the Ministry of Finance as head of the office responsible for statistical work. Albert Montemont's application to the Royal Society of Sciences of Nancy was registered on March 15 1821. Caumont was responsible for the report which he made on June 21 1821 after Montemont renewed his application and sent his new work a Voyage en Italie. Subsequently Albert Montemont who was a prolific writer proved to be a very assiduous correspondent: the works he sent are mentioned 28 times in the Table de Favier! He translated all of Walter Scott's works and wrote a 51-volume Histoire universelle des voyages. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor on December 11 1850. 18303220258<p><em>Hand-coloured etched concertina-folding peepshow with four cut-out sections and three loose cut-outs; front-face measuring 118 × 145 mm this a little spotted and rubbed; extends by paper bellows to approximately 500 mm; modern slip-case; therefore no title label.</em></p><p>The front-face consists of a view of the Arc de Triomphe. This is separated from us by a wooden fence. On our side of the fence soldiers with their horses relax. The large peephole is in the arch of the monument. Peeping through it we look down the Champs Elysées towards the Place de la Concorde which is shown on the back-board. The Obélisque has yet to be installed there so the scene precedes 1836. On the cut-out sections civilians and military await the military procession which seems to be forming up in the distance. The military on the second cut-out stand to attention and a solitary soldier on the third section presents arms; otherwise everyone seems relaxed.</p> Hall [?] ainé, Editeur, Suceur. de Atin. Owner's name stamp inside each volume. Tiny closed tear in front endpaper of volume 1. Inch-long puncture in spine of volume 2 not affecting the integrity of the binding. Back cover of volume 2 is vertically creased; milder crease in front cover of volume 4. Air bubbles under cloth on volume 3 which also has a small ink drip stain on the spine. Small nick in cloth on edge of volume 4's front cover. A few of the folding maps have closed tears but most are totally intact. Text unmarked and binding tight across the set. Very good condition overall. An important contemporary account of the American Civil War by a prince of the deposed House of Orleans a grandson of Louise Philippe of France. Philippe le Comte de Paris came to the United States to volunteer for the Union Army in 1861 where he served on the staff of General McClellan until July 1862. He later returned to Europe where he was floated as a potential candidate for restoration of the monarchy in France. However he spent much of his later life in exile in the United Kingdom. This four-volume history is complete with numerous folding maps of Civil War battlefields and forts. This edition published across 1875-1888. Porter & Coates hardcover

A vintage advertising brochure featuring women's fashions including Silk Frocks Easter Hats Spring Coats and Sportswear along with pricing. In 195 John Joseph Haggarty opened the New York Cloak and Suit House a small exclusive women’s clothing store. He did so by securing a building on Broadway in the center of the Los Angeles business district and there laid the foundation for one of the most successful businesses in the commercial history of the city. Having become an esteemed leader in the industry after just a few short years he expanded his business with the opening of Paris Cloak and Suit House. He and his wife made annual trips to New York and Paris to bring the current fashion trends to the West Coast. When this venture had proved a success due in large measure to his expert knowledge of the business Haggarty purchased a controlling interest in another large house known as the Paris Cloak and Suit House. Into it he brought besides capital the wide experience and natural business ability which had made him a success in life.
