Engravings drawn by Admiral Paris.</p><p>The circumnavigation by Admiral Paris in the 'Artémis' took place between 1837 and 1840. The engravings from the original drawings after Laplace and others include a wonderful view of Manila a picturesque Honolulu a chillingly grim view of the penal colony at Port Arthur Van Diemen's Land /Tasmania; and the 'Artémis' run aground at Papeete Tahiti; The introductory text by Henricy places each engraving in the context of the route taken by the 'Artémis' which visited Sydney as well as Hobart. A luxurious large paper reissue of the finely engraved illustrations originally published in the Laplace edition of 1841. Forbes writes: "This is a deluxe limited edition evidently assembled with the aid of Edmond Paris who had become a distinguished admiral. Some authorities consider the plates better printed in this edition than in the Laplace text. It has always been a very difficult work to obtain and is found in surprisingly few collections of Pacific voyages". Condition: cleaned large paper wide margins very good condition. Non comune esempio di ritratto ottenuto con la tecnica del Physionotrace strumento meccanico-ottico per la riproduzione semi-automatica del profilo del soggetto; la silhouette a grandezza naturale grand trait o in scala veniva arricchita di dettagli da un miniaturista ed incisa su piastra per la riproduzione. La tecnica venne sviluppata attorno alla metà degli anni 1780 da Gilles-Louis Chrétien 1754-1811 che ebbe in Quenedey dapprima un collaboratore e poi un affermato concorrente. Sicuramente il più noto sistema pre-fotografico di ritratto ottico-meccanico il Physionotrace si diffuse in Europa nel corso del XIX secolo tanto per la committenza aristocratica ed altoborghese con l’affermarsi della moda delle silhouette quanto per la produzione di raccolte di immagini di personaggi celebri; la dagherrotipia e la fotografia portarono rapidamente all’oblio questa affascinante quanto macchinosa tecnica. A scientific publication serving as an attempt to illustrate the foundational principles of natural philosophy through the lens of popular toys and sports aiming to engage the youthful mind in scientific exploration while encompassing the fun aspects of play. At the start of the book the narrative introduces Tom Seymour who has returned home from school to Overton Lodge where his family eagerly awaits him. His father proposes to teach Tom about natural philosophy using toys intending to evoke both learning and enjoyment. Written by John Ayrton Paris a British physician and a possible inventor of the thaumatrope with W. Phillips in April 1825. Illustrated by George Cruikshank a British caricaturist and book illustrator praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. Bound by Sotheran & Co. London. Bound in half crushed morocco with marbled boards. Externally sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor loss to the paper on the boards with a small crack to the head of the rear joint. Front hinge tender. Internally firmly bound with the front free endpaper loosening. The binding is sound. The medical dynameter and scale of equivalents is present on the front paste-down endpaper and in good shape.
