Fourth edition of the Norment account; and first edition with the updated history of Robeson County with particular emphasis on the Tuscarora and Lumbee Indians by Olds. Octavo. 192pp. illustrated from photographs. Illustrated printed brown wrappers. Slight loss at the spine ends but a handsome else near fine copy. Henry Berry Lowrie of mixed Native American Portuguese and probably African-American blood was made an outlaw in part to escape conscription in the Confederate forces in the Civil War and for possessing firearms which mixed race people were forbidden to own since the Nat Turner Rebellion and led a gang of similarly stigmatized blacks and Native Americans in North Carolina and was considered something of a Robin Hood figure. After the War Lowrie and his gang while by no means angels engaging in robbery and murder of establishment figures fought against the reinforcement of white supremacy by reconstruction officials and gained the sympathy and protection of the non-white population. While most of the gang was eventually killed or captured Henry Berry Lowrie's fate in true legendary fashion was disputed: some saying he died cleaning his shotgun others that he escaped and was occasionally seen in the area. This initial account by Mary Norment whose husband was killed by the Lowries while unsympathetic is nevertheless compelling. Usually found rebound and this copy is very scarce the wrappers. A handsome production issued in 52 copies only printed on handmade paper presumably by The St. Albans Paper Company with their advertising card laid in. The poems are "Air and Clod" by James Berry; "Among Friends" by John Ormond; "Dream" by Emma Rose; "In St. Philip's Churchyard" by Fred Sedgwick; and "Ah Babel" by Anne Stevenson. A rare annual report authored by L.L. Berry secretary-treasurer of the New York-based Missionary Department of the A.M.E. Church for the year 1938-39. Llewellyn L. Berry 1876-1954 was born in Hampton Virginia and graduated from Hampton Institute. He served as pastor of various A.M.E. churches in North Carolina and Virginia between 1908 and 1933 before spending the last twenty-one years of his life as Secretary-Treasurer of his denomination's Home and Foreign Mission Department. The present report contains an opening message by Berry as well as sections on missionaries who have passed away in the last year "Visits to the Foreign Field" reporting on official visits to "all the mission fields in Africa" a separate section on the group's "Cuban Mission" which Berry attended a section on the the Voice of Missions the organization's official periodical and more. Most of the latter half of the report is comprised of a detailed financial report of the Missionary Department before Berry adds an optimistic conclusion. According to OCLC Columbia University is the only institution holding any annual reports from Berry with copies from 1933-34 and 1940-48; we could locate no institutional holdings for the present year. unknown

The 1970 Seafair Trophy Race was won by Dean Chenoweth driving the intrepid U-12 Miss Budweiser which two weeks before had flipped and nosed to the bottom of the Columbia River at Pasco WA during their Tri-Cities Atomic Cup. He was known for being one of the earliest writers to integrate Jamaican vernacular in his poetry. The title poem is written in the voice of Lucy a Jamaican woman newly arrived in London and missing Jamaica and many of the poems represented here share the perspective of Jamaican migrants in English society.
