This is a scarce volume of County Genealogies Pedigrees of Hertfordshire Families and Genealogia Antiqua or Mythological and Classical tables compiled from the best authors on fabulous and ancient history both by William Berry. County Genealogies has a beautifully illustrated title page and pages of decoratively printed genealogical charts. The genealogies have been collected from the Heraldic Visitations manuscripts in the British Museum. In half leather binding with marbled boards. Externally very smart. There are a few marks to the boards and some rubbing to the extremities. Internally firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages with the odd scattered spot throughout. Fine. - Over 360 words penned on three-and-a-quarter sides of folded 7-7/8 inch high by 5 inch wide "Queen Street Congregational Chapel Wolverhampton" stationery. The English nonconformist divine Charles Albert Berry congratulates the American Impressario Major James B. Pond on his marriage "Do I know the happy bride I have a sort of dim notion that I both saw & spoke to her. Am I dreaming or have I had the pleasure" He goes on to say that he's "made a place for her in my invisible circle of memoried friends." Explaining that though he and his wife will be visiting America soon he has no intention of lecturing "I am being pretty much worked to death & my holiday when I take it must be a time of real rest." He mentions hearing the Dr. Abbott may be permanently staying in Plymouth and goes on to write his impressions of the state of affairs in Britain: "Over here things are getting hopelessly mixed theologically politically and socially. Spurgeon is urging the Churches to get back to pre-scientific beliefs: Chamberlain is struggling to hold the country to pre-humanitarian views upon Ireland: and a little band of men in London are shouting pre-Civilized crudities about socialism & the like." Folded for mailing else near fine.</p><p>The English nonconformist divine Charles Albert Berry 1852-1899 was influenced by the New York Dutch Reformed Church minister Dr. J. M. Macaulay when the latter resided in England for a few years. After attending Airedale College in Bradford to study for the ministry he became pastor of the St. George's Road Congregational church in Bolton. He became pastor of the Curch at Queen Street in Woverhampton where his broad views and eloquence made an impact. Having promised Henry Ward Beecher that he would visit America he did so but refused the invitation to succeed Beecher. Following an 1892 conference at Grindelwald he Hugh Price Hughes and Alexander Mackennal introduced the ideas and principles of a Free Church federation throughout England. He served as the first president of the Free Church congress and also served as president of the Congregational Union of England and Wales. He effectively campaigned for peace between England and America over the Venezualan boundery dispute.</p> Wolverhampton, May 17, 1888.

Weeks with the inscription upper left corner "Rec.d by mail Nov. 3d 1849." "Rev. Dr Jenks Boston" written on a brown piece of paper pasted down on the verso of the front wrap. <br /> <br /> Rev. Dr. Jenks was a Harvard graduate and taught at Bowdoin College as a young man. He later moved to Boston and opened the first free chapel for seamen. On offer is a letter from a successful 19th century business owner to his father Albert concerning several business matters that cannot wait. The letter was handwritten on September 22 1885 by Eugene S. Berry 1854-1922 of Rochester New York to his father Albert. Eugene owns and operates E. S. Berry Victor Roller Mills a wholesaler of flour and feed operated in Victor Ontario County New York. Context clues from within the letter suggest that Albert plays a high-level role in the business and that Eugene seeks his approval. This single-page letter is handwritten on E. S Berry letterhead. In it Eugene informs his father of challenges with getting a business contract from Mr. Parmele who seems to be an employee of his firm. Mr. Parmele is eager to have Eugene sign said contract imminently but Eugene will require additional time with it before signing. Eugene expresses concern that the company insurance policy expires that very day. An excerpt: I told him that I should want ample time to examine the contract and search and that the 25th would not give it time if he did not furnish the search sooner than Thursday and if then I would be ready on Monday the 28th if all was right. Eugene concludes his letter signing it Yours in haste. This brief letter provides insight into the daily stresses of a busy American businessman as the 19th century drew to a close. The letter is written on one side of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. There is evidence that the letter has been folded but it is in good shape. The writing is extremely legible. There are two tiny tears on the left side of the letter at the fold lines but this does not interfere with readability. Overall G. ; Letters; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author .
