Alexander who composed the lyrics for the first song featured "Onward! Alma Mater Song". 21pp. Pp. 11-14 contains one of the earliest published pieces by Vladimir Ussachevsky composer and later co-founder of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center becoming one of the major innovators of 20th-century electronic music it was he who proposed the ADSR envelope for electronic sound. Emigrating from Russia in 1930 he began studying music at Pomona College a sister school of Scripps College. In 1951 he was to create the first-ever recording of electronic music. Nice. The soloists in this concert were soprano Lucy Marsh and violinist John Richardson. The chorus was accompanied by the Victor Orchestra. The Narberth Choral Society was created in the spring of 1921 opened the Steel Pier in New Jersey in June 1921 and as this program indicates performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City in Nov. of that year. There is no evidence that it continued to exist after that year. In 1923 Clarence C. Nice conducted the San Carlo Opera in 1928 he became director of the Rollins College conservatory by 1932 he was at the Orlando College of Music and in 1935 he became state director of the Florida Federal Music project. American soprano Lucy Isabelle Marsh 1878-1956 recorded frequently for the Victor Talking Machine Co. from 1909 to the late 1920s both under her own name and under the name Anna Howard. Violinist John Richardson 1906-2004 was a child prodigy born in Philadelphia who performed with many orchestras in the Mid-Atlantic region. After attending Curtis he joined the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1935 he became concertmaster of Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. He later joined the Dallas Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony. Includes many advertisements for businesses in the Ardmore-Philadelphia area. Quite scarce. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara during a recording session at Carnegie Hall with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. <p>Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. Born in Vienna Austria in 1901 Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra later called The Symphony of the Air until his death.<p>From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance rehearsal and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.<p>Gara's action portraits were used for record covers for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time Life and other major magazines around the world. Fine. - An 11 inch high by 14 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting Leonard Bernstein seated at a desk with recording equipment to his right a cigarette pensively held up near his mouth. The great violinist Isaac Stern seated next to him reaches towards the score while the classical music producer and clarinetist David Oppenheim stands at left smoking a pipe. The three together with a partially visible fourth man appear to be attentively listening to the playback. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara during a studio recording session with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Identified by him on the verso as "Leonard Bernstein & Isaac Stern / CBS Recording Session Spring 1956" the photograph is signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. <p>The Koussevitzky Foundation commissioned Leonard Bernstein to compose "The Serenade after Plato's Symposium" in memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky. Bernstein completed the work for solo violin strings and percussion on August 7 1954 and premiered the work in Venice with violinist Isaac Stern and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on September 12th of that year. Bernstein & Stern subsequently recorded "The Serenade" for Columbia Records with the Symphony of the Air on April 19 1956. Features a striking cover illustration depicting Mazeppa tied naked to a wild horse the punishment he receives for having an affair with the Polish Countess Theresa in Lord Byron's narrative poem Mazeppa. Good. - Single-spaced typed letter written from the Hippodrome London and filling one side of the event letterhead10-1/4 inches high by 8 inches wide for "George Robey's Concert in aid of The Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage at the Palladium". Signed "Yours sincerely / George Robey". The edges of the letterhead are chipped & slightly darkened. There are some crosses in the left margin emphasizing one paragraph of the letter made by either Robey or the recipient. Good. <p>George Robey writes to novelist Hall Caine profusely thanking him for sending him the manuscript of an Address to be read at the charity event and for having it bound for auction. "I have asked Mr. Sutcliffe to be kind enough to let you have it first in order that you may put your signature on the title page.I will get Miss Vanbrugh who is to read the address to sign it on Sunday and also put my own name and any other people connected with the concert who may be of interest.I feel sure that in addition to helping the collection that night your generous gift will realise a large sum on its own account."<p>George Robey 1869-1954 English comedian singer and actor in musical comedy is regarded as one of the greatest music hall performers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hall Caine 1853-1931 was a Manx author best known as a novelist and playwright. In his day he was extremely popular and his novels outsold those of his contemporaries.
