Very good. 12.5 x 9.5 inches old dark red leather and marbled boards very good with general rubbing and wear but tightly bound and contents mainly very good. With ownership leather label on front cover of Marquis of Abercorn probably John James Hamilton 1756-1818 and bookplate of Anne Jane Abercorn 1763-1827 who was the third wife of the Marquess of Abercorn; both the Marquess and his wife had Irish roots and interests -- he was very invested in the politics of County Tyrone and she was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Arran. There is also an old handwritten index of the song titles on a double-sided sheet loosely inserted. Highlights include a number of compositions that appear to be initialed by the composer Mazzinghi over a dozen songs based on Scott's Lady of the Lake an early appearance by Mozart in English and several Dublin imprints. Direct from the Widdrington library at Newton Hall - the family's eighteenth-century country house near Alnwick Northumberland - with the armorial bookplate of S.E. Widdrington and a pencil shelfmark to the front pastedown. Samuel Edward Widdrington formerly Cook 1787-1856 was an English writer. Having served as a Royal Navy Captain he spent some years in Spain and wrote several books about the country. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society. He assumed the name Widdrington by royal license and purchased the moiety in 1842. In 1854 he served as High Sheriff of Northumberland. He inherited the Newton Hall estate from his father Joseph Cook. In a cloth binding with blindstamped decoration. Externally some shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. A beautifully bound & presented edition </p><p><strong>Joseph Timothy Haydn</strong> died 17 January 1856 compiler of dictionaries was well known as the author of the "Dictionary of Dates" 1841 19th edition 1889 and of the "Book of Dignities" 1851 3rd revised edition 1894. The "Book of Dignities" was a modernised form of Robert Beatson's "Political Index" but omits the lists of holders of many important offices. He also edited Samuel Lewis' "Topographical Dictionaries". His name is used in the "Haydn Series" of dictionaries which are on the same lines as those compiled by him. He does not however appear to have taken any part in their actual compilation. They are the "Universal Index of Biography" edited by J. B. Payne 1870; "Bible Dictionary" edited by C. Boutell 1871 2nd edition 1878; "Dictionary of Popular Medicine and Hygiene" edited by Dr. E. Lankester 1874 2nd edition 1878. For a short time before his death on 18 January 1856 Haydn had been in receipt of a small pension of £25 granted by the government. It was continued to his widow.</p> Edward Moxton. hardcover

Bond together by a blue paper band as published. 31 1 p. <p><br /> A very early edition of the libretto of Haydn’s oratorio Die Jahreszeiten The Seasons which was premiered in Vienna in 1801.<br /> <p><p><br /> The libretto was prepared by Baron Gottfried van Swieten who was also responsible for the text of The Creation and it is based on passages taken from the long English poem under the same title by James Thomson. <br /> The composition had a dual premier both held in Vienna first in April 1801 exclusively for the aristocracy whose members had financed the work and in about a month for the broader public.<br /> <p><p><br /> The libretto was published with no credit for the translator first in Vienna in 1801 while the music score in Leipzig by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1802. This Munich edition of the libretto possibly accompanied the oratorio’s premiere in the city.<br /> <p><p><br /> Scarce we could trace only one copy of this edition in institutional holdings in Austria.<br /> <p>.
