""Nowhere is Maurice Ravel s ability to conjure up the world of a child more vividly revealed than in the web of fairytale and reality imagination and intense sensation that is woven through his opera L Enfant et les sortilges The Child and the Enchantments. The opera s libretto by the French novelist Colette was drafted following a commission from Jacques Rouch the visionary director of the Opra de Paris. In mid-March 1916 Colette sent her sketch to Rouch who offered it first to Paul Dukas and then to Stravinsky; barely a fortnight earlier Ravel had left for the Western Front as an army driver. That September Ravel serving somewhere near Verdun was offered the third refusal but although a copy of Colette s text was mailed it never reached him. Ravel finally received and accepted the commission only in the spring of 1917 and it was not until well after the end of World War One that he began work. Oh! Cher ami when oh when the Divertissement pour ma.petite-fille wrote Colette to Ravel in the summer of 1923. If he didn t get a move on this work that she had first conceived as a Divertissement for my daughter was going to turn into one for her granddaughter petite-fille instead. In the spring of 1924 with a premire for the new opera confirmed at the Thtre de Monte Carlo rather than in Paris as originally foreseen Ravel seriously set to work on completing L Enfant.
Durand & Cie hardcover

Orenstein p. 256.

Ravel composed Le Tombeau de Couperin a suite for solo piano between 1914 and 1917. Each of the six movements which are based on those of a traditional Baroque suite is dedicated to the memory of a friend who had died in the first World War. Ravel orchestrated four movements of the work in 1919: Prélude Forlane Menuet and Rigaudon; the orchestral version was first performed in Paris by the Pasdeloup Orchestra under the direction of Rhené-Baton on 28 February 1920.

"Ravel was one of the most original and sophisticated musicians of the early 20th century. His instrumental writing - whether for solo piano for ensemble or for orchestra - explored new possibilities which he developed at the same time as or even before his great contemporary Debussy and his fascination with the past and with the exotic resulted in music of a distinctively French sensibility and refinement. . In Le tombeau de Couperin Ravel's contemporary harmonic vocabulary Romantic pianistic gestures especially in the Prélude and Toccata and prominent use of the major 7th notably in the refrain of the Forlane are superimposed onto 18th-century forms rhythms cadences and ornamentation. In preparation for composing the suite Ravel transcribed a forlane from Couperin's Concerts royaux in the spring of 1914 and there are clear musical parallels between it and the corresponding movement in Le tombeau. This perhaps weakens the claim that the work is more of a homage to 18th-century French music in general than to any particular work of Couperin though no specific models have been found for the other movements. In celebrating Couperin Ravel was responding to a more general resurgence of interest in the golden age of Louis XIV." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online. Durand [PN 9569] unknown

192686618Montfort l'Amaury 1926. Fine. ""Pas le temps de bien entendre les mélodies grecques qu'il interprétera aussi bien sans mes indications d'ailleurs"" ""No time to properly hear the Greek melodies which he will interpret just as well without my indications anyway"" Montfort l'Amaury 9 novembre 1926 13.50 x 10.40 cm une page Autograph letter dated and signed by Maurice Ravel 2 pages on a cardboard note with letterhead bearing his monogram and his address ""Le Belvédère Montfort l'Amaury S.& O."" The composer preparing to leave for Switzerland puts his affairs in order and addresses various directives to his correspondent. The year 1926 had seen the birth in Paris of l'Enfant et les Sortilèges his celebrated lyrical fantasy on a text by Colette. Ravel receives ""une lettre de Bochie"" ""a letter from Bochie"" - patriotism never being far away! - and recommends one of the airs from his work: ""Je sais qu'on m'y demande des mélodies pour une Koloratur soprano l'air du Feu s'impose"" ""I know that they are asking me for melodies for a Koloratur soprano the Fire's aria is essential"" . ""S'il y faut de la dédicace on la remettra à mon retour"" ""If a dedication is needed it will be done upon my return"". He peppers his note with some humorous touches: ""2 reçus que j'ai oublié de laisser hier au bureau car je n'y étais pas passé uniquement pour l'apéro"" ""2 receipts that I forgot to leave yesterday at the office since I hadn't gone there solely for the aperitif""; ""une lettre du Courrier Musical : s'il n'y avaient pas ajouté un timbre je ne vous aurais même pas prié de leur répondre"" ""a letter from Courrier Musical: if they hadn't added a stamp I wouldn't even have asked you to reply to them"". I believe that Warnery is coming to the office in November and I will ask you to ask him too whether it is useful for me to send to the directors in Geneva. Please ask him to excuse me it's frightening what I have to do before my departure. No time to properly hear the Greek melodies which he will interpret just as well without my indications anyway"". Charming and aesthetic letter from the composer featuring important compositions for voice and orchestra. unknown
