Volumes housed in a modern custom-made red cloth clamshell box with gold lettering on spine. Striking collection of 40 tissue-guarded engravings depicting views of important places mentioned in scripture and drawn from nature by Johann Martin Gernatz. Each plate measures appr. 6 1/2 x 9 2/8" and is accompanied with an original text by Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert. Due to a printer's error the last plate mentioned in the first volume Berg Tabor is instead in the second volume. All plates are present including the large 3-page fold-out panoramic view of Mount Sinai. Sporadic rubbing and minor creasing along edges of wrappers. Some closed tears to spines. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Fold-out detached but present. Text in German. Clamshell box in overall very good wrappers in fair to good interior in good to good plates in very good condition. Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert 1780-1860 was a "German physician and naturalist who began his studies with theology but turned to medicine and established himself as a doctor in Altenburg Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. He soon gave up his practice however and devoted himself to research in Dresden. He gave renowned lectures on fringe science animal magnetism clairvoyance and dream and in 1819 he occupied the chair in natural history in Erlangen where he studied botany forestry mineralogy and geognosy. In 1827 he moved for the last time to Munich where he was appointed professor; it was here that the highly popular and friendly Schubert found an embittered opponent in Lorenz Oken. Schubert aimed to create a religiously-grounded interpretation of the cosmos. His masterpiece "Symbolism of Dreams" 1814 was one of the most famous books of its time exercising influence over E. T. A. Hoffmann and even Sigmund Freud and C. G. Jung. Schubert advocated an ecumenical "awakened Christianity" which found evidence for God both in Nature and in the human soul. Synthesising the Bible with the philosophy of Schelling he was a major figure in the "later Enlightenment". In his "History of the Soul" 1830 Schubert again attempted to fuse the philosophy of Herder and Schelling with the Christian tradition." From Wikipedia. J. F. Steinkopf unknown

Each plate protected by tissue-guard measuring 8 1/4" x 11" Image: 4 3/4" x 7". Large partly colored fold-out map of Palestine in rear of book. Includes few engravings as issued. Text by G. H. v. Schubert J. Roth and O. Fraas. The book was first published in Stuttgart 1839 with only 40 views none of them photographic and in only two languages. This version was first issued in 1855 being the most complete with the addition of an English text. Besides the two photographs albumen prints of Damascus and Beirut other views show Nazareth Tiberias Bethlehem Baalbek Ephesus Smyrna Patmos Nablos and Petra. Closed tears along head and tail of spine. Corners rubbed. Moderate to heavy foxing throughout. Text and captions in English German and French. Binding and interior in overall good- to good. J. F. A sammelband of nineteenth century mostly French essays and biographies on education and the role of education in a lovely quarter calf binding with marbled boards Comprising of five separate works bound as one. The first work is a memoir of the German educator and author Bernhard Heinrich Overberg translated from its original German into English. He was a key player in the reformation of schools during the late eighteenth early nineteenth century. The second work to this book is a critical work on the schools in Geneva by J a Dufour. The third work is a work on the purpose of popular education by Marc Viridet. The fourth work is a further essay on the council of education and has been translated from the original German with no indication of author or translator. The fifth and final work to this book is an English title by Henry George Watkins and discusses the alternates to a formal education and gives advice to apprentices engaged in trades or profession. Watkins' view is that 'the sooner young people begin to be instructed in some honest trade it is better for them'. Watkins praises the apprenticeship and this method of education. The first four works are in French with the fifth and final work in English. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally very smart with patches of minor rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Light rubbing to the boards and some minor bumping to the extremities. Rear hinge has failed with the backstrip lifting from the text-block. Internally firmly bound. Small tear to the title page of 'Considerations'. Pages to the first four works are bright with the pages to 'Affectionate Advice' being age toned due to paper used. Just the occasional light spots to pages. Good Various Publishers hardcover

Book is tight and pages clean with typical and inevitable toning given the paper stock which is not commensurate with the beauty of the illustrations as was the case with all the Schreiber plate books of this era. Minor soilage on cover illustrated paste down -- illustration is still bright. Some shelfwear to boards. Small tear in upper right corner of title page where there had been a stamp mark of some kind. The plates are held in the binding by hinges and a few of the plates have been re-set / reinforced in position. Overall an excellent example. 320 by 210mm 12½ by 8¼ inches.
