Memoirs of Duchess Helene of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Hélène Luise Elisabeth 24 January 1814 – 17 May 1858 compiled from her letters by her tutor who later became an eminent physician naturalist and professor at the University of Munich. After her 1837 marriage to Ferdinand Philippe d'Orléans at the Palace of Fontainebleau she introduced the tradition of the Christmas tree to the French. Among other curious aspects related to her life were her two sons: The eldest Philippe was later the Count of Paris and was hailed as Louis Philippe II by Royalists; the younger son Robert fought for the Union in the US Civil War.
